If I purchase a flight for someone using points that I buy ,not earn ,will the points go back to me if said person doesn't make the trip, or does the credit stay in the passenger's name?TIA

Are you gifting the points? If so I'm pretty sure the other person keeps them. We used points for our trip but earned and DH gets them back if we cancel.

I am thinking of buying a ticket for DS girlfriend. Being that they are only 17 yo, I would like to be able to use the credit for my family later in the year if they break up and she doesn't come. I know its a long shot.

If you sign into your RR acct and make the reservation for that person, and that person cancels the trip, you will get the points deposited back into your acct. I just did this last week when I canceled a trip I made for someone else and the points used went back into my acct.

If the GF does not go on the trip, sign into your RR acct and then on the right side of the home page where it says "travel tool". Click that option and then select cancel air reservation. Type in the GF confirmation number. ect. ect.

Be sure than when the cancelation pages comes up that ask if you want the government fee's you paid held for a future reservation or refunded to you, that you click the refund option. This way you will get the government fee's refunded to you. And yes they will refund the government fee's for a canceled flight. Just saw the credit posted to my credit card for the flight I canceled.

Remember if they decide not to go the reservation must be cancelled no later than 10 minutes before departure time otherwise the points are forfeited
