Are they temporary reductions on existing flights, discounted new flights, or simply an advertising gimmick?

Dings are special prices on existing flights. They are really worth it. For instance, The usual SW one way from Nashville to Chicago is about $79 but with Ding, I usually pay abou $35 each way.

They can help you save on flights you have already booked also. You cancel the original flight and book the new rates with a "credit" from your first cancelled flight. The savings/difference goes into an account that you can use for up to a year for future travel.

I've never flown SW and need your help. If i purchase today our flights out of Pit to MCO on SW and I get a ding, how am I credited? Typically, on other carriers, you are given a credit slip to use for future travels.

Also, if they offer an internet rate lower that what I would have purchased today (other than a Ding fare), is the credited in the same manner.

Thanks!

If you see a lower fare for your flight, you have to cancel your original flight and rebook at the lower rate in order to get credit for the difference. Your creidt will be in ticketless travel funds, which you can apply to future flights (w/in one year of when you booked the original flight).

If you've never done this, it's best to call SWA (1-800-IFLYSWA) and a csr will walk you through the steps.

I did just this yesterday. Be forewarned that if you call SWA they aren't very helpful and tell you to do it online by yourself.

I guess it may be that you have gotten some less than stellar SW employee on the line because I did this a short time ago and the person walked me through the whole process while we were on the phone. I have never had anything except good results from dealing with SWA reservationists. I even booked my flights backwards one time and a quick call to them had them straightened out in no time - again she stayed on the line and helped me change them. Now I know how to use the travel tools I don't have to call them so often but have no doubt they will come through in a friendly and helpful manner. Sorry you did not have the same experience.

I normally would totally agree with you about getting a less than helpful CSR, but it makes me wonder about their CS department since it happened two times in a row to me. They were very impatient and I consider myself very web savy. :scratchin
