Southwest Airlines has not only been able to stay the course, but also make a profit.
Ticket counters at Southwest are overflowing and people in the airline industry say that the airline is a rare breed that actually has fans.
Southwest has turned a profit for the last 29 years. They do it by watching the big guys and then doing the exact opposite.
You could say nuts are one of the keys to the airline's success. "Nuts" is the name of a recent book about the airline because Southwest does not serve meals, just nuts.
"We're able to give a snack. Meals on airplanes isn't that good anyways," John Voyles of Southwest Airlines said.
Another way it saves money is by not issuing paper tickets. It also does not assign a seat. When passengers get to the gate, they get a plastic boarding pass. If you get to the airport early, you get to board earlier.
Southwest flies only one kind of plane -- a Boeing 737.
"It's a lot easier than the majors who have 9, 10, (or) 11 different kinds (of airplanes), and they deal with all those mechanics, al that training and all that inventory," Lloyd Miller of Departures Travel said.
For Southwest: it all adds up to lower costs, so consumers get lower fares.
Another thing customers like about the airline is that, from the beginning, employees were required to have a sense of humor. They get to dress casual and seem determined to keep their planes flying on time because if a plane is not flying, an airline is not making money.
Southwest also does not have hubs. It flies from point-to-point, so passengers are rarely waiting for a connecting flight.
