Southwest Airlines flight cancellation policy

On Wednesday, just a few days before our scheduled departure on our next trip, our son had unexpected, emergency surgery on his hip. The surgery went well, but he's still recovering. He will also be in a wheelchair or on crutches for the next six weeks.

If we had to cancel our trip, how does the cancellation policy work on Southwest Airlines? Our non-refundable tickets expire in June. Is it possible to extend this date? If so, how far out can the tickets be extended?

I assume that "non-refundable" means that I can't get my money back for the tickets. However, does Southwest ever make any exceptions to this policy?

Thanks!

I think it doesn't matter any longer (you have a thread on the disABILITIES board about getting him on the plane and around the parks, right?) but while they make RARE exceptions on refunds, if you can't use your credits by the time they expire you can extend them for six months for a fee.

We just extended ours. The fee is $50 per ticket and they are extended for 6 months.

We had to cancel a trip for my MIL last year as my FIL had a heart attack. We had non-refundable tickets but with his paperwork from the hospital they did refund the portion of the ticket we paid for (part was from a previous credit) You can call and ask.
