Does anyone happen to know whether this is in a good area to walk to from the ship? It looks like a popular tourist attraction, but I don't know much about the area. Thank you!

During the day it's fine to walk from the ship to the southernmost point. Key West isn't all that large. But I'd suggest not walking down Duval Street if you have young children. Many of the shops there have pretty suggestive t shirts and items displayed in their windows. We walked all the way from the southernmost point back to Mallory Square during October and that was interesting, also. It was during Fantasy Fest and clothing was basically optional around town.

We took one of the trolleys around the island and one of the stops was near the Southernmost Point. We enjoyed the trolley a lot to maximize our time on Key West. There's a great restaurant and beach near the Southernmost Point which was a great stop too! It was called the Southernmost Beach Cafe. Very good food with a gorgeous view!

Ditto to what the previous poster said. It's a totally safe area, do the usual protect your belongings and don't leave cash out in the open because there are pick pocketers there just like anywhere else. But you can safely walk around the majority of the area, we did a lot of walking and never felt "unsafe". I do agree that there are some pretty suggestive areas around though, just be prepared to answer questions from the kiddos or avoid that area. It's mostly bars there so it gets pretty loud too.

Great information! Thank you! I feel a little better now knowing what to watch out for:)

Southernmost point is a big marker thing, and you'll know it by the long long line of people waiting to take a picture in front of it. :)

I took a picture of it as we drove by it (going just a bit further south, interestingly) on a trolley tour.

The walk down Whitehead back to the port is nice. You'll walk past the Hemingway House, the lighthouse, the Audubon House, a *huge* Kapok tree in front of the Courthouse, one of my favorite bars in the world called The Green Parrot, Garbo's Grill (which is actually on Caroline between Duval and Whitehead), Mile Marker 0 (which, to me, is more emblematic of Key West because it's truly MM 0 as opposed to the "Southernmost Point" not really being the southernmost point in the U.S.) and many other things. I like Whitehead much better than Duval but not as much as Simonton.

Be prepared to wait in line at the Southernmost Point depending on how quickly you get there after disembarking, what time of year it is and the port load at the time.

Just walked it last week! The Wonder docked at the Naval Base and we were dropped off in Mallory Square. We walked from Mallory Square down Whitehead Street to the Southernmost Point. Just a little over a mile. We saw all the things phinz listed above. Took pictures of the Kopok tree, Mile Marker 0 and spotted some huge iguanas in a few trees along the way. Don't let the line at the Southernmost Point worry you, it moved very quickly and we got our pictures.

You know, in all the hundreds of days I've spent in Key West over the past 20 years, as well as 25 years of going to Key Largo to visit family, I have yet to see an iguana in the wild. Weird. Of course, I'm usually there in the cooler months (not always, though), and they're not as active when it's cool out.
