Southampton recommendations please

Some friends from the US are in Southampton tomorrow and are wondering what to do/visit? Any recommendations?

We are meeting up with them in the evening and plan on going out for a meal, any recommendations for a reasonably priced restaurant or good pub?

Assuming they have a car, I would reccommend the New Forest, especially if the weather is fine. Tell them to keep off the main roads and stick to the minor roads. Buckler's Hard and Beaulieu are worth visiting. Also see the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu House if that's their 'thing'.

Salisbury Cathedral is about 15 miles away, though they would have to work around Sunday services. Stonehenge is 25 miles away, just northwest of Salisbury.

Sorry, no up to date reccomendations for pubs, although the New Forest is dotted with typical english pubs that serve lunches.

You could get a train to Portsmouth (about 20 mins away) and go to Gun Wharf which is next to the station, its a waterfront marina place with loads of restaurants and pubs etc, its nice to have a look round on a warm eve. During the day there is the historic dockyard to look round with ships like the Victory and Warrier there, might be interesting to overseas visitors. If you want to stay in Southampton you could go to Ocean Village, its like Gun Wharf but smaller so you should find somewhere good to eat there.

Just a little note first - Portsmouth is more like 45 minutes to an hour by train (depending on which one you get).

If you fancy a chinese meal, then I'd thoroughly recommend Pearl Harbour - it has a small entrance on the main Southampton shopping street (Above Bar Street) and I've had two very nice meals there). There's also few of the main chain restaurants (Ask, Franky & Benny's, TGI Fridays) not far from the station.

Personally, I'm not sure what you could do in the centre itself - I usually just visit for the shops

I think getting a train to Portsmouth is a fab idea
