I know that several of us are hanging out on the Beach. It would be nice if we could gather in one place. If you want to share stories, recipes, ideas, ask questions, or just get some support check in here and say hi!

Hey! I am not following South Beach, but I am on a low carb diet. I eat 40g carbs a day (10g carbs a meal and 1 snack). I have been low carbing since May 2005 and have alot of recipes and ideas!

I don't follow SB, but I am thinking about leaning that way for a bit. I would find this interesting.

Great idea!

DH and I have been "on the Beach" for almost 8 weeks now and we're loving it! :sunny:

He's lost almost 20 pounds and I've lost about 16-17 pounds. We're finding this "diet" to be very easy to follow (no counting, weighing, measuring, keeping track of points, etc) and we like the fact that what we DO eat, is very healthy for you. I'd never eaten flax before in my life. lol

My last minute, standby recipe! Crustless quiche

eggs (# depend on how many people are eating) I use 10
1/2 cup heavy cream
ham
cheddar cheese

You could use any veggies, meat or cheese of your choice. I make this for the kids, so they don't like the 'veggies' I would.

Beat up the eggs, add the cream, mix again. Add ingredients and I use salt and pepper for flavor. Bake in pan sprayed with Pam. Bake 30 min/350 degree oven.

Hi! I never got to finish this as a migraine was coming on the other day! I was hoping people would check-in. SeaSpray--I was hoping you would join, I knew you were on the Beach.

I have lost 9 pounds since June 11th. I am actually not doing the "strict" South Beach because I am taking Topomax for migraines and it makes me very nausaus so I dont' eat all that it wants you to. I am following the principles though when I choose what to eat.

I really am liking it though. I think it seems like a very healthy and "normal" way to eat. It is easy to do. No counting, measuring, weighing etc. I have had a pretty easy time finding stuff to eat when we go out, for the most part. But I am also very assertive and have no problem asking for things prepared exactly how I want them.

I am getting a little tired of fast food salads with chicken or grilled chicken sandwiches with only 1/2 the bun. We end up eating out a lot in the summer because we are on the go a lot.

Anyone have a favorite thing they like to have that is SB friendly? I really like the Healthy Oat Muffins from one of their cookboks. I will post the recipe later.

How many carbs are you allowed "on the Beach"? I have tons of low carb recipes, but I am not sure of your carb count per meal/ or per day.

Sorry to hear about your migraines :( I only get them a few times a year and I can't imagine getting them regularly

I did Phase I on the diet pretty strictly. Then we (DH and I) sort of worked into Phase II by doing our own version of "Phase 1 1/2" LOL We didn't immediately add back in all of the fruit and healthy carbs that they say you can have, but now (this Friday will be 8 weeks on SBD) we pretty much will have the low-carb, high fiber pita breads, wraps, and whole wheat toast at 1 or 2 meals a day.

We go through phases; one week I'll make large salads with chicken or lean beef for our lunches, and then the next week I'll make wraps with chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, and Walden Farms Fat Free/Sugar Free/Calorie dressing, or light mayo. I'll often include a sandwich bag with some grape tomatoes as a "side dish" with the wraps. I just sprinkle No-Salt on them, or if we're home, I'll pour a little of the Walden Farms dressing on the side, then we dip the tomatoes in the dressing. It's the SBD version of dipping french fries in ketchup. LOL

For dinner, we do like to eat out a lot, so we'll choose either roasted chicken, grilled chicken, sirloin steaks, or tenderloin (filet mignon) and we have a salad and veggied with them, no potatoes or rice.

For snacks we have sugar free jello or Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream bars. Sometimes I buy strawberries and blueberries and cut the strawberries up and mix with the blueberries, then serve them chilled in a dish with Cool Whip Free on top. That definitely satisfies the sweet tooth! :)

I don't do the cheese snacks like the book suggests because I really just don't like that much cheese! LOL My DH does like the low fat string cheese though, so I pack them in his lunch bag for work. I usually have a small can of V8 juice for a snack at work in the morning. I had to learn to develop a taste for it! When I first started to drink it, it reminded me of cold watered down ketchup! But now I actually LIKE it! LOL

If we go out for breakfast I'll usually order an omellette with peppers and onions, no potatoes, and only 1 slice of whole wheat bread. Sometimes I have them make it with Egg Beaters, which aren't too bad at all :) I also have the cereal that the book recommends "Uncle Sam". It's very full of fiber (takes me a minute to chew one mouthful. LOL), it's not bad with skim milk and a packet of SweetNLow on it. lol

I guess that's the main part of our dining plan, within the SBD parameters. :)

I am reading the South Beach book and started low carb on Monday. Yesterday, I had 31.5 grams of carbs - down from my usual 150 or so! Monday was HARD, Tuesday was easier. I'm still contemplating breakfast right now. :rotfl:

I'm not doing strict South Beach Phase 1 - I'm just not strong enough to give up dairy and fruit. I'm just trying to keep the carb load low to help lose these last twenty pounds. And learn to make better carb choices (yams are better than potatoes, etc.)

How's everyone else doing today? I've never been so jealous of a 2 year old. I had a "breakfast muffin" for breakfast and allowed myself a whooping 1/4 cup of Frosted Cheerios to hit 10 carbs for breakfast. Russ tried the breakfast muffin and spit it out, declaring it "yucky." And proceeded to munch on three little bowls of Frosted Cheerios. Then for lunch, we had burgers with a slice of toast. He begged for more bread and I gave him a second piece but resisted on a second for me, since between the first slice, the cheese and the 0.5 tbs of ketchup, I was doubling carbs for lunch. Ouch. After two burgers, though, I'm feeling full.

I'm keeping track of stuff in Sparkpeople, too, to make sure I'm still getting enough calories. Is anyone else trying to balance different things? It's hard for me to eat something I know has lots of salt in it, since I tried for so long to keep a lower salt ratio!

And I have no idea what to make for dinner tonight. Pork, chicken, burgers, lunchmeat, pork, chicken, burgers, lunchmeat - I'm only in the first week and getting bored! (No, I don't like fish.) I think I'll make some of the breakfast ham.

Hey everyone! Sorry I started this and then dissappeared. Between real life and a computer that I want to :badpc: I haven't been able to post much. The last 2 days it takes my computer about 15 minutes for each post. I think DH has it fixed now. I will try to find time tomorrow or this weekend to answer some of the questions asked here.

As of today I am down 10 pounds in 6 weeks. I am thrilled.

That is funny katerkat! I swear I read once about losing weight by eating the same diet as a toddler. I will have to see if I can find it. I think it was a humorous piece. I swear Goldfish crackers are a huge temptation to me. My kids don't eat them much anymore so that is easier this time around.

Oh, I read that to lose weight, you MOVE like a toddler. Goodness knows, Russ never sits still! He probably burns three times as many calories as he takes in. :rotfl:

Here it is! It is called the Toddler Miracle Diet

DAY ONE
Breakfast - One scrambled egg, one piece of toast with grape jelly. Eat 2 bites of egg, using your fingers; dump the rest on the floor. Take 1 bite of toast, then smear the jelly over your face and clothes.

Lunch - Four crayons (any color), a handful of potato chips, and a glass of milk (3 sips only, then spill the rest).

Dinner - A dry stick, two pennies and a nickel, 4 sips of stale beer.

Bedtime Snack - Toast piece of bread and toss it on the kitchen floor.

DAY TWO
Breakfast - Pick up stale toast from kitchen floor and eat it. Drink half bottle of vanilla extract or one vial of vegetable dye.

Lunch - Half a tube of "Pulsating Pink" lipstick and a cigarette (to be eaten, not smoked). One ice cube, if desired.

Afternoon Snack - Lick an all-day sucker until sticky, take outside, drop in dirt. Retrieve and continue slurping until it is clean again. Then bring inside and drop on the rug.

Dinner - A rock or an uncooked bean, which should be thrust up your left nostril. Pour iced tea over mashed potatoes; eat with a spoon.

DAY THREE
Breakfast - Two pancakes with plenty of syrup, eat with fingers, rub in hair. Glass of milk: drink half, stuff pancakes in glass. After breakfast, pick up yesterday's sucker from rug, lick off fuzz, and put it on the cushion of your best chair.

Lunch - Three matches, peanutbutter and jelly sandwich. Spit several bites onto the floor. Pour glass of milk on table and slurp up.

Dinner - Dish of ice cream, handful of potato chips, some wine, coffee.

FINAL DAY
Breakfast - A quarter-tube of toothpaste (any flavor), bit of soap, an olive. Pour a glass of milk over bowl of cornflakes, add a half-cup of sugar. Once cereal is soggy, drink milk and feed cereal to dog.

Lunch - Eat crumbs off kitchen floor and dining room carpet. Find that sucker and finish eating it.

Dinner - A glass of spaghetti and chocolate milk. Leave meatball on plate. Stick of mascara for dessert.

No one has posted here in a few days, but I am going to start the SBD and was looking for some support. My DH and I are thinking of doing a modified version. We will follow the foods they recommend, but not the exact day-by-day diet. I have some questions to post, I would appreciate any suggestions.

Will be still see results even if we not following it exactly?

I think the book indicates that quantity isn't important, just your food choices...am I right?

Diet soda ok or not?

How about a cup of caffinated coffee in the am? I am addicted!

Thanks for the help.

Hello fellow Beachers! :sunny:

I haven't posted here in a while! DH and I went to WDW and got back 10 days ago. When I weighed myself the next morning after the trip I was showing a 4 pound gain! :scared1: But by the next morning, it was down to a 3 pound gain, then 2 days later a 2 pound gain, and by 3 days later, which was my "official" weigh in day at work, it showed NO GAIN at all from the previous week which was before the trip! So, I was thrilled that even though for 4 days DH and I went off of SBD and had frozen drinks, a burger and fries, Tonga Toast (we shared 1 order), our other food choices during the trip were probably very close to SBD guidelines (sirloin steak called Beef Teriyaki at the Kona Cafe, served with broccoli and mashed potatoes, sticky wings, etc), and in the end, we really did not gain a thing. :) THAT weigh-in was last Friday; today I was down 1 pound at my weigh-in. Tomorrow we're going back 100% to following Phase 2 of SBD. In the past week we've been MOSTLY back to SBD but had a couple of meals that weren't exactly SBD approved. lol

TKERBELL: We got bored with breakfast too. We got bored with ALL meals, actually. What we did on the weekends was go out to our local diner-type place and order SBD approved meals; DH would order the steak and eggs (no toast, no home fries), and I'd order a western omelette and tell them to go easy on the ham and cheese, and heavy on the peppers. Also, no toast and no home fries). Now that we're on Phase 2, we will have whole wheat toast, though. No juice, though. DH has coffee and I have tea. I can put SweetNLow in tea, but NOT in coffee. lol So even now if I have coffee, I HAVE to put 2 tsp of real sugar in it. DH does the same. We don't drink much coffee though, so it hasn't had an impact on our diets.

For snacks on Phase 1 we were pretty much stuck with Sugar Free Jello with Cool Whip Free. :rolleyes1

As for water, I'd squeeze lemon and lime into ice water and drank that, sometimes I'll add a SweetNLow. Its pretty good. Just hang in there, Phase 2 gets MUCH better!! :)

andrychowski: I think you will see results as long as you try and follow it as closely as possible. Even on weeks where DH and I have had a few "extras", we've still seen results. Personally, what seems to mess me up sometimes is when I eat foods with too much salt, and then its water retention, but I like to see the results on the scale, whether its water or not, so I try and avoid salt and salty things as much as possible.

I, too, got the direct impression from the book (the chapters, not the recipes) that quantity is not as important as quality. During the times when I've been hungry, I'd have more plain chicken breast, an entire can of string beans (I did NOT just admit that. LOL), another salad, etc, just to get rid of the hunger, without going off the diet. It worked!!

Diet soda is ok on SBD; but I'd try and not overdo it because most diet sodas contain sodium. I know that Diet Rite soda is sodium free; I used to love their black cherry! LOL But if it comes down to diet soda or something really bad, go for the diet soda! lol

I know the book said that some caffeine each day was OK but to have MOST of your beverages be non-caf.

lovestoscrap: That toddler diet is hysterical!!!

katerkat: I try to do low-salt too, as well as low-fat, in addition to SBD. SBD diet is our "core" diet, then within that, we try and choose lower fat versions of foods such as cheese, and other things. The book basically recommends low fat anyway. Also, since I have high blood pressure, I'm just used to trying to keep away from salt, and I know that I retain fluids if I take in too much salt.

I hope everyone is doing well! I'll try and post here regularly! :sunny:

Hey guys-

My husband and I started SBD last Saturday (5 days ago) and he has seen weight-loss (5 lbs), but I haven't. I have been sticking to it extremely closely, but not doing exact meals, just using only foods they allow. Any suggestions? I am currently experiencing my monthly cycle...could that be a problem in seeing the weight loss? I think I am doing very well without cheating, but the little or no weight loss is very discouraging!

Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to the Beach :sunny:

It's got to be extremely frustrating for you to being doing all this work and eating well, and NOT lose any weight so far! Also, to see your husband lose weight, but not you. All I can say is that when it's that time of the month, my weigh definitely fluctuates, and it appears that I haven't lost any weight for a week, but then the following week it finally shows up. Just stick with it and hang in there, and keep doing what you've been doing, and eventually it will show up!

I lost 5 pounds the first week, 4.5 pounds the second week, and averaging about 1 pound a week, since then. Some weeks it looks like I didn't lose anything, some weeks looks like only a half of a pound, but then once in a while I'll have a 2-3 pound loss, even when I haven't done anything differently. It's all body chemistry, and I think in the long run it'll all even out.

Please keep in touch and let me know how it's going :) The first month was the most difficult, getting used to a whole new way of eating (well, for us, it was extremely new and different from what we were used to! LOL), but after that it has become second nature. :)

Don't give up!!!! :)

It is amazing, but I am not having a hard time staying on the diet. I don't have many cravings at all. My sister-in-law is visiting and made some wonderful cookies and it hasn't been hard to avoid them. I think I will have a hard time going from phase 1 to 2. I think I will be afraid I will gain weight back. I guess that is normal. Any suggestions for that time? What did you add and how did you know how much was too much? I guess it will help if I see some weightloss soon.

Thanks for the encouragement.

That's great that you're not finding it difficult to resist! :) My DH and I found it pretty easy too, and from what I understand, that means that we weren't "addicted" to carbs in the first place. Some people really are addicted to them and their bodies go through withdrawal; I guess we're fortunate that we didn't experience that.

During our second week of the SBD (still Phase I), my husband was on a business trip and because some of the co-workers took him out to dinner a few times, he strayed a little off the diet. So when he got back, he asked me if I'd do another week of Phase I with him, so I did. Then the following week when we were supposed to start Phase II, we were kind of scared too, so we did a sort of "Phase I and 1/2". LOL We basically stuck with Phase I, but added in things like low-carb/high fiber pita pockets, and put grilled chicken and lettuce and tomato and other veggies into them. We did "Phase I and a 1/2" for a few weeks. We also bought the "Uncle Sams" cereal that the SBD book recommends and had that with skim milk and SweetNLow a few mornings a week. After we realized that we were not going to gain back all of our weight, we got more comfortable with adding healthy carbs back in, and some fruit. At first I'd buy fresh strawberries and cut them up and serve them with Cool Whip Free. Sometimes strawberries and blueberries. It made a nice dessert, and a nice change from the sugar-free jello we'd been eating. lol Also, at breakfast I'd make us some light whole-wheat toast, with a tiny, tiny dab of butter, to go with our eggs. Sometimes I wouldn't bother with butter at all and just have dry toast with eggs. Not bad, actually :)

It wasn't easy to make the adjustments because you begin to feel comfortable within the confines of Phase I, but the book is correct when it tells you that you really SHOULD move onto Phase II, because that's when you'll really look to make good choices out in the "real world". And that's when you'll learn how to eat in a healthy way, long term.

We still don't eat as much fruit as the book probably tells us to, but we're definitely getting our carbs from whole wheat bread, whole grain pita pockets, whole grain wraps, etc. I've made whole wheat pasta a couple of times too, and served that with plain marina sauce. I get a craving for sauce every once in a while, and many times I just make something and add salsa, and that helps my tomato-sauce craving.

We've been on SBD for 11 weeks now and a few times we've had meals that contained "bad" foods (especially during our 4 days at Disney World, just a couple of weeks ago. lol) but in the end, we didn't gain anything that week because MOST of our food choices at Disney were good choices, and that over-shadowed the pina coladas and few bites of chocolate lava cake that we had! lol

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! I've only lost 20 pounds so far, I still have a lot more to lose, but I feel like I'm off to a great start and have learned what I need to know, to continue successfully :)
