DH & I just started the South Beach diet & will probably still be in our "Second Phase" when we land at WDW in Aug. The diet has some flex, but basically it is VERY low carb (even fruits!) and relies on artificial sweeteners.(Very new & a little scary to me!) I'm hoping to stay within the diet by trying to make special requests that the major restaurants I've selected: Artist Point (planked salmon w/o the maple glaze?) California Grille (no flatbread pizzas this time) and Jiko (the marinated tofu will be OK, but I'll really have to cut down on the accompanying grains) Has anyone done South Beach at WDW?

Sue, check out the WISH Board here at the DIS. There are tons of tips for low-carbing at WDW. :)

I started the South Beach diet 7 weeks ago and am down 22 lbs. It really works. But when I go to WDW I'm not going to worry too much about what I eat for 3 reasons:

1. I'm on vacation
2. The diet has changed my 'cravings' so I'm not as hungry as I used to be. I'll be eating less this time without trying
3. When I get back from the vacation the diet will take off any weight I put on. DW and I were at an all-inclusive in Jamaica a month ago and I came back 4 lbs heavier but I just went back to phase one for 3 or 4 days and the weight came off. I was worried that going back wouldn't work a second time around but it did.

Good luck with the diet and enjoy your trip

Thanks for all of your support, w/ a special thanks to MHopkins2 for suggesting the WISH Bd. I never really knew about that Bd. & it has alot of great info. There was a post about So.Beach & I copied 2 low carb recipes. I'll probably visit that Bd. regularly for a while. Thanks again---Susan

I'dlike to find out more information about this diet. I have been on WW for 1 and 1/2 years now and have it a wall with my weight loss. I have lost 25 so far (152lbs to 127 lbs) I still would like to lose 15 lbs. Can you send me some information?
my email is BPrice @si.rr.com
Thanks
Jill

It is somewhat similar to Atkins, but with more emphasis on the types of fat you eat and the "good" carbs instead of practically no carbs. The South Beach Diet was created by a Cardiologist who found that his patients had a hard time staying on the Heart Association's extremely low fat diets. He thinks Atkins was on the right track in terms of creating a diet that satisfies hunger, but this diet is more heart healthy.

The easiest way to learn about South Beach is to buy the book, which is unfortunately still in hard-cover, only. It's on the New York Times bestseller list, so B&N give a 30% discount. The book is much more than the diet, because they went to restaurants in the So.Beach area & had them design recipes for Phase one and Phase two. These recipes are really helpful because they give you a blueprint to follow until you get familar w/ the concepts. In fact, DH was just reading a Phase one recipe last night for chicken breasts coated in crushed pistachio nuts (you're allowed 30 per day) that didn't seem like a diet recipe at all. If you can live without the carbs (i.e. bread, pasta, white sugar and flour etc.) the meal plans can be as interesting as you want to make them. My major complaint is that our meals have gotten more labor intensive, even for someone who loves to cook & makes full family meals on a regular basis. This week, I've been cooking a form of eggs for breakfast every morning & this is a new time demand when you are trying to get out the door to work. But we started on Mon. & DH has lost 8 lbs. and I've lost 5 lbs. Its only Fri. & we already feel a difference in the way our clothes fit. We should be well on our way by the time we reach WDW in late Aug. If the restaurants aren't working for us, we can do "some" cooking because we are in DVC & get a full kitchen. But I'm committed to trying to get the major restaurant meals to work for us, because by the end of Aug., I'll want a vacation from all the cooking.

We are doing low-carb weight loss also.

We have no trouble finding things to eat, anywhere in disney...actually this is the best weight loss plan hubby and I have ever done...it is so easy. All real food, no cravings.

Thanks for the information. This web site is great. I have printed out about 10 pages on the diet and on the plane tomorrow morning (YEAH!!! TO WDW!), I'll read through them.
Thanks again.:D

After a weekend of heavy cooking/pre-prep to enable us to stay w/in our diet during our hectic work week, I am even more committed to making the restaurant of WDW work for the So.Beach diet during our vacation. I know that Phase one is the toughest & we'll be ending it this wk. Phase Two is where we will be for our Aug. trip. I really appreciate being able to discuss our dieting needs w/ you (all) on the Resaturant Bd.
