I check this board once in a while to see if I can rent some points from someone. I have noticed that most of the people who rent out the points are new to the boards. I don't know about many of you old timers out there, but I don't feel comfortable renting points from someone who has just joined DIS. Am I the only one who feels this way??? No offence to you newbies...welcome to the boards..but when we are talking a money transaction with a total stranger, there has to be some kind of comfort level & being a member of the DIS family for sometime gives that to me. Like I said....sounds silly but..... and again..... I am not meaning to pounce of the new members.

Sorry, but what exactly do you suggest we "newbies" do? I have points that are going to go to waste. I don't have time to surf the web and "meet" people all day long and develop so called relationships with strangers. Just because you do "talk" to people on this site does not mean you know anything about them. Don't kid yourself into fully trusting anyone on the internet..even from Disney sites. There is a level of trust in doing any kind of business in this fashion. It is a useful tool for ALL people to be able to "rent" their points that they will not be using. To anyone interested in these transactions - on both sides - get everything in writing and never take anyones word for anything!

Be smart!!:D

That IS silly.

Why would I trust you more than a newbie? I have met MANY wonderful people here at DIS, old and new.

If you can't trust a fellow DVC member, who can you trust?

Bill

Maybe it's because us oldies have found a much better way to rent points than this board where people are always trying to get them for a whole lot less than they are worth!!!

Sorry, you may be upset by it, but the hotel room market right now is as soft as grandma's feather bed.

I can wait and get deluxe Disney resorts for as little as renting DVC points at $10 a point, and sometimes less, with annual pass rates.

And the new Fairytale package promotion is really a room giveaway, when you run the numbers.

If people have bought DVC as an investment, they are probably going to be sorry at some point, just like everyone in the stock market has been, and like most people in real estate might be soon.

I'm new to this board as well, but I think its a wonderful provision for DVC members to rent their points to others who can help them avoid wasting them and getting something in return. Adding to that, I, even as a non-member, consider $9 or $10 per point to be a reasonable price, and it gives me an opportunity to get a little nicer accomodation at WDW. I certainly don't see any members trying to make a profit on their points. If you think that it would be better to go through Disney or your travel agent, perhaps that's what you should do. Why wrangle with members here on the boards?

Be happy:p

I'm not doing any "wrangling"...

And I am right now in the process of renting points from someone, if the ressie is available, for $9.50 a point, which is what they offered.

My response was to the poster who was complaining that less than that is somehow less than they are "worth".

"Worth" is what someone will pay you, not what you wish you'd get.

If you don't want to rent your points for under $10 or more, don't, but if you're getting upset with DVC owners who rent for $6.50, and renters who hope to get points at that price, I would suggest your issue is more with the price Disney is charging for DVC vs. the hotel market in Orlando right now, than with people who are just behaving like normal market buyers and sellers.

Whoa Horse!!! Sharon..you sure sparked a fire here.. Where is the Disney Love and Magic :(

This is business and the price should follow the market and the market is down. Remember supply and demand from your junior high economics. I typically only see low prices from those who have points expiring sooner hoping to rent them quicker.

:D

First I have to say...in regards to renting points, I have absolutely no experience since I have never rented pts from anyone nor have I ever rented out my pts nor have I ever been even remotely interested in renting out my pts for any price and with the way I use up my pts every year I sincerely doubt I will ever wish to rent out my pts.
I can wait and get deluxe Disney resorts for as little as renting DVC points at $10 a point, and sometimes less, with annual pass rates.
However with getting rooms at WDW with fantastic discounts I have loads of experience and although I agree there are wonderful deals right now for all WDW rooms you still can not get a deluxe resort for the same price as paying $10.00 a pt to rent DVC pts. A studio during the week would only be 10 - 12 pts and you can not get a deluxe room even with the wonderful discounts for $100-$120.00 per night.
There has recently been a large # of relocated POFQ guests who have gotten deluxe rooms for a great price (myself included, $104.00 per night for both the Poly and YC!) but that rate is/was only available if you were booked at POFQ and now have to move. Even with the great discounts, deluxe room for "room only" would be between $160.00 - $220.00 per night w/tax and with the Fairytale package (which is a wonderful deal btw, for those that need park tickets) it is approx $1650.00 for 2 adults for a week at CBR which is a moderate not a deluxe so that comes out to $235.00 per night. A co worker just booked this fairytale package today for early Oct, I am sure a deluxe resort would be substantially higher.
If people have bought DVC as an investment, they are probably going to be sorry at some point, just like everyone in the stock market has been, and like most people in real estate might be soon.
I bought my DVC as an investment, an investment in wonderful accomendations at WDW for me and my family and friends to use and I am not sorry at all. My DVC membership has more than paid for itself may times over in the many wonderful trips I have taken to WDW and will continue to take for the next 39 yrs!

This is not a business. This is a vacation and if you joined the boards just to rent points I can understand why someone might be suspicious. Every day I read about some internet scam to seperate people from their money. I am in no way implying that anyone who rent points here is doing that but it is a buyer beware situation. I understand why someone would look before they lept.:smooth:

During the *week* only, yes that's true, but if you want to stay on a Friday and Saturday night, when you total the points for the whole stay and divide by number of nights, you are bumping right against the Wilderness Lodge and Animal Kingdom Lodge zone with Annual Pass rates, and you have certainly overshot the AP rate for a Fort Wilderness Cabin if you start looking at one bedroom units (though I realize the Cabin isn't everyone's cup of tea).

And at those properties you get maid service, which I have sorely missed on occasion staying DVC -- when the prices get about even, I do feel torn between the DVC renter's pool hopping and discount privileges, and daily maid service.

p.s. Don't get worried, kids, it's just a debate. Disagreement doesn't have to spoil the "magic". :p

A DVC studio unit is still cheaper at $10.00 a pt figuring on 12 pts Sun-Thurs and 22 pts Fri & Sat which comes to 104 pts or $1040 for a week or $148.57 per night. I calculated on preferred view pts at BWV, standard view pts or pts at OKW would be approx $129.00 per night for the week. Even with AP rates at WL & AKL it comes out to more per night once you add on the tax, also you do not get as nice of a room, i.e the loss of the kitchenette which is very convenient and you would not be in a resort as conveniently located as BWV is.

Speak for yourself, Nuthut, not all of us "oldies" are out to skin people.

I certainly don't see any members trying to make a profit on their points.

You don't? Apparently you missed the discussion last week when Nuthut was trying to gear us all up to rent at 12.50 per point. I believe that making a profit was the intent of his OP.

I am sorry all of this has started up over my post. I wasn't pointing fingers at anyone or implying newbies (or old timers for that matter) rip off people. All I did was ask a question.... I never brought up prices (of points or hotel rooms). Also, please don't imply that all I do is sit on these boards (and talk to people)... If you see how long I have been a member and see how many posts I have ..... they are very few for the amount of time being a member. I was just curious as to why it seems only newer members (or guests....not even registered) rent out their points.... As far as I am concerned, I wish I had not posted this question & hope that admin puts a lock on it before it gets out of hand.......
