Someone made a throw-away comment in another thread about trading SOTMK cards with Cast Members. Is this a thing? Is it only certain places?

yes there is normally as CM stating out side the fire house where you can get your cards with a book one side of the book has cards the other side has pens you can trade up to two cards day with the CM , but they changes shift every 45 minutes or so.

Outside of the Fire Station where you pick up cards, there is a CM stationed with a binder than has a few cards and pins that are both available for trading.

This is good to know for our next trip! DD has traded cards with other guests like PP, but also trades pins so this would be perfect!

Can someone please tell me what the heck you people are even talking about?

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/attractions/magic-kingdom/sorcerers/

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is an interactive card game in which guests help Merlin save the Magic Kingdom from Hades and his villain friends

Players begin at the Fire Station on Main Street. Here they receive a pack of 5 cards that will be used to play the game. There are 60 free cards in total, 10 paid, as well as bonus cards from Halloween and Christmas parties. These cards feature characters from different Disney stories, and are each assigned different types, skills, etc, that react with each villain differently.

Each day, a player can receive a new pack of cards. Because the packs are randomized, there is no way of knowing if you will have duplicates until you open them. For players who try to collect the whole deck, they can trade with either the CM outside the Fire Station, or with other players they encounter. There are different levels of rarity, so it can be hard to collect certain cards without trading. It took me 9 months of regular play (meaning 2-4 new packs a week) to collect all 60 cards, even with some trading.

Can each person in a family get a pack?
Yep! Every player gets a pack of cards.

When playing with multiple people, one person will be the key holder - they will be the ones with the ability to activate the portals. The other players will need to be linked to the main player to get a pack.

This game is linked to the RFID code in your magicbands/tickets and not to your MDX account. This can get a little confusing, but if you have multiple bands, you must use the same band every time to continue your game - if you bring in a second band that is linked to you on MDX, it will not work.

I didn't know that! So to get this straight, if we do the game for the first time this December while wearing special holiday magic bands we bought for this trip, we have to bring those bands with us every time we go to the park, from then on? Even if it takes us years to play -- we don't get to WDW that often!

Essentially, yes.

The game can be transferred between bands, so you could have them move the game from the holiday one to another, but you would still need to bring the holiday one with you on the first day. Last year I switched my main game between 4 different bands based on the season with no issues.

The games are said to last on a band for 6 months. After 6 months of inactivity, they system should reset and you would have to start over. I have heard reports of the game lasting longer, but it's not a guarantee.

Ohhh, bummer, then. We were looking forward to starting this, but since we're not at WDW more than once a year at this point, we'd never get to finish. However, we ARE planning on moving to Florida and getting APs in a few years. Would it be okay to start collecting cards now, and playing mostly later?

I would definitely bring the band with you on future trips just to see if the game still works. I'm not sure how the system is managed, so your game may stay active. It doesn't hurt to at least try.

As for collecting cards now, absolutely. The cards themselves aren't tied to any one game, so you can start collecting and bring out older cards with you on each trip. You don't even have to fully play the game if you don't want - you can just activate a portal to collect cards each day. Even if I don't go to the park to play the game, I will often activate the portal just to pick up my daily pack.

The game ' finishes' on about 30-45 minutes (or longer or shorter depending on how fast or slow you want to go). After that you start a new one that takes you to a different land and you can adjust the difficulty. I, like you, only visit once every few years and personally I'm not that bothered by it resetting in the months in between. It gives me an excuse to start on easy again for a refresher, anyway, useful if you haven't been in 20 months. My guess is it really won't be a problem.

We go to Disney once a year. We've had our progress saved on our SOTMK key cards for a year twice now. We'll see at the end of this month whether they are still there for a 3rd year in a row.

How did we miss the CM with the binder?!? We've played this on each of our last 4 trips. Very good info guys.

Side note: we have also traded cards with guests. it's always fun for the kids to get to trade their cards to get new characters.

The game itself actually takes 3-4 hours. Each villain takes about 30 minutes, and there are 10 villains to defeat.

When you finish a level, you can choose to upgrade to a harder one, but can also ask to remain on easy. I have been through the game about 8 times and stick with medium most of the time.
