Sort of OT- Princess Sing Along DVD

OK- I am the first to proudly wave the banner of feminism. I do not think it is a bad word and believe that women need to stand up for themselves and learn to take care of themselves and not wait around for a "prince" to rescue them. That said, I have a 2 year old DD who thinks she is Cinderella and is most DEFINATELY a princess, girly-girl and I am fine with that- I bought her the Cinderella dress, figurines, and we watch the movies together.
I bought the Princess Tea Party SIng Along songs and it was cute--songs from classic Disney movies-fun. Until the selection from Mulan. I KNOW the movie Mulan is about a girl who bucks tradition and is a very strong female role model BUT the song that was selected from the movie was "Honor to Us All"- a song about how if you do your hair right, you'll get a man-men like women who are obiedent (can't even spell it!) and who have a small waist. Men honor the emperor by fighting in wars and women do it by having children. YIKES! What were the powers that be thinking when they chose that song??? It does not represent the movie and taken by itself-I'll say it again-YIKES!!! Anyone else think this was odd???

Have you seen the movie? This song is from the very beginning where Mulan is still trying to "fit in" to the traditional feminine role. So the song is appropriate for where it falls in the chronology of the movie.

In general I agree with you on the whole "rescue me" thing, which is why I prefer Beauty and the Beast and other movies with stronger feminine roles. DD4 however has her own ideas LOL!

I do know that the song fits into the movie so I am ok with that but when taken by itself-that's when I cringe. My mom laughs at me b/c when I was little I was into the princesses and girly-girl things and I turned out fine but I argue that my exposure to them wasn't like today--VCR's weren't around then, no Disney Channel (heck we only had 3 channels until I was in high school) so life was different. My DD has her own ideas and she tells us she is CInderella. It's funny. I just wonder who thought that that song as a stand alone was a good idea!

I think they're starting to really "reach" when it comes to Princess songs for those Sing-a-Longs. I just saw the newest one at Costco and didn't even recognize any of the songs!
