I just need a place to vent, cry and whine a little. My darling angel David is 18 and had a stroke when he was 6 months. He is at the level of an 18 month old. Last friday DS had an appt at the hospital for some routine dental care. Every 2 years he is sedated and has all his dental work done. This year SURPRISE we got a call from the O.R saying he needed his wisdom teeth taken out as they were impacted. We met him back in the recovery room and that is when it got bad. He started to vomit blood ,his nose was bleeding heavily from the ox tube. We were there 10 hours until he was ok to go home. We came home and he kept rubbing his nose causing it to bleed and sticking his fingers in his mouth. We had to put a sweatshirt on him and keep his arms out of the sleeves and then tie them behind his back like a strait jacket for him to sleep. He would not eat or drink because of the swelling and pain he would take my hand and just cry. Mr Dr did send over a perscription for codine yesterday and that has helped. It has been a horrible few nights for us. Lots of vomiting of blood last night. This morning lots of crying. I am drained. I called DR and he was wonderful just telling me things are ok and what to watch for. He knows we can't put ice on his face, he knows we can't have him rinse with salt water etc....I just hate this and the killer is when he looks at us with those beautiful eyes like he is saying......."why did you do this to me". I just needed to whine a little to people who "GET IT" my friend said, "Oh my son had his out and he was fine in a day or so"...ummmm did you have to tie his hands, did you have to get supositiories for pain med because he would not eat or drink or take meds etc. I know she didnt mean it and she was trying to help. Thanks for letting me have my little meltdown here. I feel much better. Ok now to go let DH have a break from hand holding :wave2: thanks again everyone, I feel much, much better.

Don't know if bleeding is still a problem and/or if the following will work for you. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I kept vomiting blood. Thankfully when a new nurse came on duty, she got teabags to put in my mouth where the teeth were removed. It stopped the bleeding and I quit vomiting. I've never heard of this before or after, but I know it worked wonders for me. I realize your ds may not keep them in, but thought I would let you know! Lots of pixiedust: for you!

We have thankfully not had to deal with oral surgery, but my boys have had other surgeries so I know what you mean. It's just terrible when you can't figure out what the problem is or when they are looking at you in pain and you are trying everything to make it better. When my youngest had his tonsils out he refused to drink, pain meds made him sick, it was awful. We finally got some suppositories to stop the vomiting and things started to improve from there.
Hope he feels better soon! And a :grouphug: for you!

My heart aches for your son and your family!! I hope that he is feeling better very soon.

Keep us posted on how he is doing! much love to you.

I'm SO sorry. It is obvious that you love him very much, and I know this is hard on all of you.

Go ahead and vent. Even normal procedures are difficult for our kids. Having to restrain him must hurt you a lot. Just cuddle him when you can. Things will improve. Karen

I'm so sorry. What a wrenching experience for all of you. I totally understand what you're saying when you said the hardest part was him looking at you and not understanding what was going on. That would be really hard for me too.

I know he's taking pain meds, but do they have such a thing as a pain med/sleep aid combination drug? I hope he feels better really soon. :grouphug:

You're not venting, you're understandably overwhelmed at seeing your child in pain. Thanks for allowing us to support you.:grouphug: Praying for your precious one. Nicole

hugs and prayers.:grouphug:

Instead of ice how about something like a cool pillow to lay on. I feel sorry for your poor son, may he receive healing mercies.

I hope your son is feeling better soon!!!:grouphug:

It is so hard when your child doesn't understand that you are doing what you have to do for their own good. It just breaks my heart when I get the look you are talking about.

DS is feeling much better. He looks horrible!!! 2 black eyes...really big, huge black eyes. Swollen on the left side(Infected) so you cant even see his eys and pretty swollen on the right BUT he is eating...boy is he eating (Mashed potatos, soup, mac and cheese, yogurt, pudding, jello, scrambled eggs, oatmeal, milkshakes ) The pain meds work great at night and he is sleeping like a rock. He is still bleeding from his mouth and nose when he decides to push his finger up his nose or use his tongue to wiggle the stitches. My DH took him to OUR Dr. this afternoon because his temp was between 99- 100. He did have some greenish discharge from his mouth. Dr gave him antibiotics to clear up the infection. He seems to be happy just bloody!! If anyone comes to my front door right now boy will they be surprised...DS pushed his face against it (he loves to feel the cold) and left a big bloody face print with two bloody handprints on either side....I need to go clean it but I keep doing other things instead. I can just imagine what will happen if someone comes to the door!!!! Thank you all so much for the hugs and good thoughts. It is amazing what a few kind words from people who "Get it" can do...that and sleep.

That is great news. Since he likes to put his face on the cold door then you could use cold things to help with the swelling like a bowl that has been left in the fridge or freezer. Big hugs for you and your son and prayers too.:grouphug:

I'm so glad that he seems to be doing better. Keep us posted, and hopefully the antibiotics work quickly.:grouphug:

You would think because he likes to put his face on cold things he would let us put cold things on his face....nothing doing!!! It is pretty funny. The antibiotics seem to be wroking. Still swollen but not as fluid looking (that sounds strange but that is the only way I can sedcribe it). One more day home and then perhaps he will be ready to go back to school!!!!

Aww, it sounds like you have really had a time with him. my DS12 sounds a lot like your son( Christian functions at about 12-18 months). He had to have sinus surgery 4 yrs ago and it was horrible. Bloody vomit for hours. He had to be hospitalized and he didn't understand what was happening. Just kept vomiting blood. It was simply awful.

Then the next day he got up and started playing with toys.

I guess it's a good thing they don't know how much we worry over them, isn't it? Hope your boy goes back to school soon so you can get some rest. Hang in there. :thumbsup2

How are things? Is he feeling better?

Hang in there. I've had a tough day here with my DS and it always helps to come to this board and get some sympathy!

You are a good mom to be so in tune with your son. He is lucky to have you.

Ds went back to school yesterday. He is doing much. much better! He looks terrible with his black eyes...and I mean BLACK. They are huge. The infection is gone and we still have antibiotic for awhile. He is eating and drinking and the only bleeding is still his nose a little. We have to clean out the clots (Sorry, gross info that only a mom with special needs kids will understnad) before bed because if we don't he will pick and make sniffing noses all night. It only bleeds a trickle when we use the saline and q-tip. Dr said it was ok to do this considering the special circumstance. Thank you all for your kind words and your understanding. We seem to be back on track!!! Thank goodness!!
