Now I just need a bit of clarification on hand luggage.

I've just been on the virgin website and it states that hand luggage should measure no more than 9 x 14 x 22 inches. Now my DD8 has a roll along case that she really wants to take, I've just measured it and it measures 7x11x21 but thats not including the wheels at the bottom or the pull along handle. If I measure it including the handle and wheels it measures 8x11x24.

Do you think that I would be ok to go with the measurements of the case without the wheels and handle?

Before Virgin changed their luggage allowance, my DD just took this as her second case for checked luggage, but its not big enough now we only have 1 case each IYKWIM?

If I can't take it as hand luggage, we'll just have to leave it at home.

:thanks:

I know they say that. My DD also takes a roll along case and it is roughly the same size as yours. We have never had a problem, even with domestic flights. The measurements are approximate and serioulsy, we have never been pulled on the size including handle and wheels. It doesn't fit in the overhead lockers in the cabin and we have always had it under the seat in front of us with no problems.

That's great news you have just made a little girl very happy! Funny how something like that has just made her jump around the room in excitement

Makes perfect sense to me. Mine is the same with her suitcase. :confused3 Suitcases and hotels. One way to keep her happy! I am going to get something from the loft this evening so I will measure it and give you the exact dimensions. I know it was borderline though and slightly over with wheels and handle so I think it is about the same as yours.

Right. Done it. :) On my case the depth and width are slightly bigger than yours. They height with the handles is about half an inch shorter though, but it has a little stand thing at the bottom (looks like stoppers) which I didn't fully take into account, hoping they wouldn't either - and apparently they never have, even on domestic flights.

Oh that's really good of you, thankyou!!!

Blimey you were quick! Yeah its the stand thing and the wheels that were worrying me, if they weren't there, the case would defo be within the limits. Hopefully I will be ok with it :goodvibes:

Thanks for all your help

In July going to Orlando the hand luggage was weighed but nobody said anything about the size, DH camera equipment bag is the size of a small suitcase and weighed 9kg. On the return journey it wasn't even looked at and that was with virgin.

I have never seen them measure either. I think it is just a case of discretion as to whether it needs to be checked, but still, if they do a random check, I don't want my DD's case to be the one with a problem. I cannot begin to explain the drama it would cause ...... :headache:

They have little measuring 'baskets' near the entrance to check in for hand luggage - Virgin can frequently be sticklers about hand luggage weight at Gatwick, but even so I've never seen anyone, ever, be asked to try putting their luggage in there to check size.

I'll make sure I don't stuff it too full! it would definitely be a drama at the airport if she couldn't take her beloved suitcase :lmao: It will mainly be just stuff for the plane and a change of clothes and her Pj's seeing as we are going to be leaving our check in luggage for ME to pick up, so hopefully it shouldn't weigh too much

I've got a little pink suitcase that I like to take with me to Florida too. I was told by one of the stewards on the Continental flight that it was a perfect carry on bag! I'm not sure what it measures though, can't be that different to yours though.

We flew with BMI Baby in July to Jersey and I didn't take it, I was so pleased because their metal cage thingys for checkingt he size of hand baggage was half the size of every other airlines, and they checked everyone and I mean every single person in the line to see if they could charge them anything extra! I saw one guy ram his bag into the thingy to make it fit that he couldn't actually get it back out! :rotfl: It fitted though so the guy didn't have to pay any more ££, he just had to carry the cage with him for the rest of the flight :lmao: Just kidding!
