I just booked friends 7 flights on SW but I did not book a seat for an 11 month old. Do I need to make SW aware of this child before the trip or do they simply show up with him. Thanks.

You will at least need to make them aware when you check in. They need to know that you have a lap child.

If you want a seat for this child, you will need to book it and pay for it, if you want to hold him/her on your lap for the entire flight, you should probably let them know. IMHO, please, buy a seat for this child and put him/her in the proper restraint for the safety and comfort of the child and those around him/her.

Thanks Alexturner and Gail. I am doing all the leg work for a friend and her sisters family. I suggested a seat for safety reasons but my friends sister is very cheap and does not want to pay for a flight. I will once again though pass along these concerns.

SWA is very reasonable with their child seats. Under 2 goes for 1/2 price. Worth it not to have the little one loose on a bumpy ride.

Lap children must be noted on the ticket. Your friend will need to make sure they note that at check in.

Also, make sure they understand that they don't get a luggage allowance for the lap child.

As a previous poster mentioned children under 2 are 1/2 price. You just need to request an infant fare. It is much safer for the child to be restrained in the car seat than on a lap. I fly frequently and have seen lap children injured during heavy turbulance.
