How long do they last? I went to the doctor for a chest cold and he said I don't have strep because I'm too old. I didn't know that. I don't have a fever either. I just have a really bad sore throat with a chest cold. It's been a week now and I still have it with no sign of it getting better. I have been gargling with salt water and have used the Chloraseptic tabs but nothing seems to work. Any advice?

I didn't know that strep had an age limit. I think you should go to another doctor, because you should be feeling better by now.

Too old for strep? I never heard of that. Did they do a strep test just in case?

Too old for strep? I'm 40ish and just had strep throat last January.
How does your throat look? Is there white stuff on it?
If you have a cold your throat maybe sore from drainage. Try something to dry up the drainage. I know the sore throats that I have had with colds last about a week or so.

Never knew somepne was "too old" for strep. See another Dr.

I looked up strep and it says that it hits mostly early teens up to about 30. It would be rare for someone who is 60 to get strep. It doesn't have any white stuff on it, just red. This doctor is really a good doctor. He saved my husbands life a couple of years ago from a tick bite. He's really good at diagnosing things. I think maybe it is just from the drainage from my sinuses and the cough.

Thanks for your responses. I guess I will wait a few more days and see if it gets any better.

Most of my sore throats are due to sinus drainage. I take Clairtin for that. You should see a different doc, but I don't think it would hurt to treat the symptom.
I would also agree that no one is "too old" for strep. :confused3

Oh my gosh! I have the exact same thing. Started with a sore throat and I had no voice for about 5 days (stinks because I'm a kindergarten teacher :earseek: ) and it has turned into a chest cold and it's been a little over a week. I also gargled with salt water, ate lemon juice mixed with honey, and today I just bought some Robitussin DM. I have also gone through a bag and a half of honeylemon cough drops. I think if you look in your throat with a flashlight and you don't see white patches then it's not strep, right? Let me know if you find an answer :wave2:

ETA: Just read the other post about the white patches. I thought white patches was strep :confused3 If it's red, then what is white?

My DS17 just had a sore throat for about a week and a half to two weeks, after that he got a slight cough for a couple days. Now he is fine. I never took him to the doctor because he didn't have a fever, and basically it hurt in the morning and evening.

That's how mine is too. When I had the sore throat I didn't have a cough because everything was way too tight. Now that the congestion is loosening I have a bad cough. I never went to the doctor either because of not having a fever and I get respiratory things a lot and know what to do. Glad to know it should be over soon :)

Are you coughing a lot? If so, that can really irritate your throat. I once had a cough that just wouldn't stop. My throat was just killing me. The doctor gave me some little round pills. They stopped my cough right away. Within a couple of hours, my throat stopped hurting. It didn't get rid of my cold right away, but it sure helped the symptoms. Hope you feel better soon!

:earsboy:

It makes me wonder what I have. It started as a cold and I guess I'm a little congested, but I haven't really had my voice for two weeks now. It's coming back a little, but it's annoying being a teacher and not being able to talk, especially when I have to yell. Just kidding.

I know, many of you might be saying, "WHy hasn't he gone to the doctor?" Well, between teaching, working a second job ,and moving into my new house the week before Christmas, I really don't have the time to go to the doctor, but if I'm still this way mid-week next week, I might have to give in and go.

If it's a virus, the Dr will not give you antibiotics because they won't work and it contributes to antibiotic overuse, and it should clear in 10 days. If it goes over 10 days and you still have a problem, it should probably be checked by a doctor, JMHO.

hi,
buy sore throat drops with zinc in them. zinc speedys up the delivery and repair and production of white blood cells.

I agree! If my throat is sore from drainage I take a couple of benedryl (at night because they make you sleepy) and it will feel better. I was under the impression that strep could be white streaks or red with red dots...does this sound right to anyone? I had it once with just a terrible headache and a rash (scarlentina rash). I think I still had some white in my throat but it wasn't very sore. I'm starting to get drainage and I'm losing my voice....probably a virus or allergies! Good luck.

I have never heard of an age limit to strep, mater of fact I am over 30 and just got over strep. Also you can't always tell by looking at your throat, mine never has had the white patches, usually doesn't even get red w/ strep. I have had strep and had the doctor think it couldn't be b/c he couldn't see it. I asked for a culture anyway (and I hate those but just kinda knew what it would say) and the doc was very surprised that I did have strep and he was wrong. If you're not feeling better you need to see a different doctor.

"Strep" is the same thing as "tonsilitis." I'm 52 and had it just last year. You probably don't have it but there is NO age limit to a bacterial infection. Glad your husband is ok but the "told old" statement is just wrong. Untreated strep infections are VERY dangerous.

I have been sick for 17 days now. I took a prescription of Amoxocillian and am no better. Now I am starting my second prescription of a different antiobiotic. Hang in there and I hope you feel better. Did you have a throat culture just in case?

Man, sounds like most of us have the same thing. Many of us are teachers too! I guess we can thank our little kiddies for that, huh? :rotfl:
