Hi friends, as the title suggests, i have just returned from DLRP with partner and her 2 kids. The wee boy was in agony descending into Paris. Any ideas of solutions or tips would be fantastic as we are starting to plan for WDW.....

REGARDS

Those flight ear buds, my hubby uses them with no probs and he gets bad ears. I made the girls drink or have some sweets when we took off and landed

A few years ago on our return from DLP a small girl beside us was in severe pain with her ears on the descent. A cabin crew member got two cups with hot flannels in the bottom and placed them over both ears. It seemed to do the trick. Hope this helps.

Ironically, this technique is dubbed "the mickey ears' trick" :D

A classic trick is to chew bubblegum as it stimulates the production of saliva, and swallowing will equalize the pressure inside your ears. This does not work for everyone, also don't forget to pack bubblegum since airports no longer sell them

Pinching your nose and trying to blow hard through your nose might also manage to relieve some passengers. Actually some pilots do that trick during landing procedures.

You're more prone to getting pain from the altitude change when you have a cold, or a blocked sinus.

Some MDs might recommend the use of corticoids prior to the flight, that sometimes help, sometimes it doesn't, but anyway physician's advice is mandatory for such medications

homeopathy is not unheard of, and treatment needs to be started days or weeks in advance.

special ear plugs can also be purchased, with various results

each person is different, so in the end it might only be trial and error

also...has your partner taken her little boy to the doctors? I only say this because we get a lot of children with ear problems in the hospital where I work and maybe there is an underlying problem that may need to be looked into. It maybe down to something as simple as just having a cold a while ago...the tubes leading from the ears can become inflamed because they are very narrow in young children.
How was he on the way back landing?

both of our kids had terrible ear/sinus problems when they were young (and still today when they're 'grown up')...

we used various solutions...

when they were babies, i had them nurse or have a bottle during take off and landing..

when they were toddlers, the doctor prescribed decongestant to keep their ears clear...

when they were a bit older they used children's dose otrivin spray...

and now as adults, they use otrivin spray whenever they fly..

if all else fails, and they still have pain on landing despite the otrivin, they do the cup with hot towel in the bottom over their ears.....it doesn't take away the pain, but it takes the edge off a bit..
i have lots of pictures of DD sitting in the lounge at schiphol in amsterdam with cups over her ears, waiting for our next plane...poor thing...

Hi all, thanks for your replies:) Vanda he was fine on the way home thanks.....think i will get the ear plugs and look further at the spray....once again cheeeeeeeeeers to you all:):):)

i forgot to mention ear plugs - DD used special ear plugs on our trip this past august and they helped a LOT..
they're special ear plugs designed especially for airplane use..

i completely forgot about that...

she used the ear plugs and otrivin both....
both on the way to the US and on the way back, and on the internal flights from NYC to Orlando and back...
she said the ear plugs together with otrivin worked really well...

My DD had horrendous problems with her ears until she used Ear Planes, we got them from Boots. You put them in the ear just before take off and 1 hour before landing. They've made all the difference! :thumbsup2

I have used ear planes and they work great on me. You can get kids ones in boots.

If i forget to buy some I just make sure I have something to drink as that helps alot.

nothing worse than ear pain. I have seen a number of kids on flights in agony and the poor parents can do nothing its a shame.

Pinching your nose and trying to blow hard through your nose might also manage to relieve some passengers. Actually some pilots do that trick during landing procedures.

this is also the method used by scuba divers and it's the method i always use when i fly (and when i drive in the mountains), but you have to be very careful with this.
You can blow out your ear drum - it happened to my mom.
She was in terrible pain when we were landing once so i encouraged her to hold her nose and blow. She kept blowing and blowing but it didn't help. But she kept trying and blowing harder and harder.
All of a sudden i heard a terrible noise - the loudest thing i'd ever heard.
Like a balloon popping but worse.
Her pain stopped, but i knew it must have been her ear drum.

Later that night, she was feeling really ill, so i took her to the emergency room at the hospital and sure enough, she'd blown out her ear drum by that little maneuver.

Fortunately, it eventually healed completely, but it might not have ended so well.
So be careful with that nose blowing trick.
