None of the stores around here have it yet although Amazon can have it to me by Friday. I was hoping to hear from someone who actually tried one out before ordering it. I really want it by next weekend so I don't want to wait too long. Any thoughts?

I like the looks of the new camera too but I'm going to wait a little while for it. I bought 2 new cameras in the past year, the DSC H-50 and A-300. My DH may kill me if I get another camera right now. I have been checking it out and none of the stores around here have it. Sony's website doesn't even have availibility until April 29th. If you get it you have to let us know how it works.

It was only released yesterday so good luck on finding one local. There are a number of reviews that have been posted. I have to get one in my hands before I would actually spend money on it, but I am looking.

This camera gets really good reviews, but I'm wordering if it's a big enough step up from my Sony H7? I'm not good enough to do much with a DSLR yet, but I'd like to learn, when I have the time. I really like my H7, but I'm ready for a little more. ;)

Should I invest a little more in a DSLR now, for what I want to learn in the future, or should I stay with P&S for now?

And, if you say stick with P&S, is the Sony HX1 a big enough improvement from the H7 to be worth the money?

Or,

if you say I should get a DSLR, is there one in the $700-ish price range that I would be happy with?

Thanks for your input - I know you guys won't let me down! :thumbsup2

Well we just got one last week and love it so far. We also own a few Nikon DSLR's but got this as a easier to take around camera for certain occasions. We like the 'H' series from Sony having owned an H2 years ago. Can't speak about the Hx1 vs. the H7 though.

We will probably bring it when we go to WDW next month along with our D300.

I believe the Nikon D40 is still available for probably around the same cost as the Hx1 but of course you wouldn't get the reach out of the DSLR that you do with the Hx1. We still own a D40 and are big fans of it.

have you used that panoramic feature yet? how was it?

I can't compare between the Sony HX1 and your current H7 but I did play around the the pano in the store on the HX1 and thought it was a great way to accomplish that picture. It seemed to do a very good job albeit I didn't download the photo.

If you go the DSLR route each of the major brands has very nice entry level cameras and you can't really go wrong with any of them as far as quality and the ability to take very nice pictures. But there is of course a difference between a P&S with zoom and many auto scenes and using a DSLR.

I think each manufacturer (Sony, Pentax, Olympus, Canon, Nikon) has a package below $700. Sony has two new models that with rebates you could get a two lens package for around your budget or less or with a single lens they are both under your budget. Those are the A230 or the A330 with the main difference being that the A330 has an articulating view screen and live view. You might still run across the A200 or A300 which were the previous models and be able to get a good discount.
