I was wondering if anyone had an experience with either the Sony Cybershot DSC-W55 or W50. I'm looking to make my first real digital camera purchase. (My tiny Vivicam 2395 is so bad is doesn't count as a camera!) After looking around quite a bit the Cybershot DSC-W55 is the one I keep being drawn back to, but I don't know anyone personally who is familiar with this camera.

I don't need anything super fancy. I'm looking for a decent point and shoot digital camera for basic needs - vacations, my nieces etc. I also have an online craft related blog that is benefited by a camera with a decent zoom and macro setting. I've been borrowing an older 3.2 mp cybershot from a family member and love the pictures it takes, which is why I was looking at the Sonys for my purchase. I am on a budget so I really need to stay around $200 or so.

Anyone have any thoughts, or possible alternatives to the Sony Cybershots? My one issue with them is the propietary batteries and memory sticks. I'm not put off by them enough to not make the purchase, but on the other hand am not opposed to finding something that will take SD memory cards and rechargable batteries!

I am not sure about the two you are asking about. I have a 3.2 Sony and then for last Christmas my husband gave me the Sony DSC-W70 that is a 7.2 megapixel camera. I know that it is going for right around $199. I love the photos that it takes and it is so slim that it fits great in a pocket. Good Luck with your hunt! :wizard:

I forgot to add that it comes with a battery charger and the battery stays charged for over 300 pictures and I take pictures with the screen lit up. You can also buy the generic or "Sandisk" memory sticks to use in it. I bought a 2Gig one from Amazon for $20.

I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-T30 SuperSteadyShot with 7.2 Megapixels; 3.0" hybrid LCD monitor and holds approximately 420 shots. The battery last quite a while and comes with a recharger...only takes a couple of hours to charge. All the pics I have posted on this site (excluding OLD Disney photos) have been taken with this camera. I love it. It is small, but takes excellent pictures. Very clear and lots of settings for different backgrounds.

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty convinced it's going to be a Cyber-Shot. The fact that the old 3.2 mp camera still takes fantastic clear pictues makes me want to get another one.
