Back in may i bought my little 2 y old boy a buzz lightyear trolley suitcase to use as handluggage.

However i just measured it and the lenght and width are below the max measurements it is 2cm over the depth max. Are they being really strict and measuring hand luggage or will the 2 cm make much difference.

I know its a daft question but he keeps talking about taking it on the plane and i dont want the trip to start in tears.

many thanks

They are being incredibly strict at the moment. So, unless the regulations are changed before your trip, I wouldn't risk it... You are very likely to loose the case. Personally I think it is better to manage the situation at home, now, than have some mean security guy wrestle it off you and take it away at the airport...

They have to draw the line somewhere :(

Maybe you can find some way to explain that his current trolley bag is too big and find a smaller Buzz Lightyear back pack or something within the new dimensions? Ok it isn't perfect, but maybe you can put some spin on the new back pack being EVEN better?

Thanks.

Will have to try and find him a new bag and hope that he will accept it. He is on the autism spectrum and we have problems getting him to accept new things. Think i will use the suitcase as his second check in bag so it still goes to the airport!

Must be difficult for all parents at the mo but at least we feel safe, back to packing :cool1:

Get it as soon as possible then - give him as much time as possible to get used to it. Maybe get him to start packing it (one thing a day goes in the bag or something along those lines). Maybe get him to help choose it.

There are other people with very special children on this board, maybe they can offer some advice regarding acceptance.

My one concern regarding checking that bag - is it sturdy enough? Luggage in the hold gets thrown around a lot and squashed... woudl be awful for it to get damaged. How about packing it inside one of your cases and then taking it out for use at the parks etc instead?

Good luck with it :)

We have just returned from Florida having flown on 11th August during the height of all the problems. We flew with BA and found them very sesitive to the fact that we were flying with two children on the autistic spectrum and they were very willing to try and be as flexible as possible with us to help our situation. Why not try ringing your airlines special needs department for advice as they may also be flexible with you as it is not a huge amount out of the size limit. Good luck

This is a lovely thought, but the problem is that it is not BA (British Airways) who enforce the hand luggage size restrictions, it is the BAA (which runs the British airports and airport security) who set and enforce these restrictions...

The airline will not be able to help you out here - no allowances will/can be made. From what I have heard, the BAA personnel are being VERY strict on enforcing the new restrictions (they have little wooden frames that your bag HAS to fit in) and that 99.99% of passengers are having their bags measured. Yes, there may be a 0.01% chance of slipping through... but not something that would be worth risking, especially with a sensitive child (how do you explain why that man is taking away his bag and that he will never get it back?). :( Better to be prepared...
