Songs from music class in "the olden days"

Fifth grade music class:
"Happy Together" Turtles
"Piano Man" Billy Joel
"Cold As Ice" Foreigner
"59th Street Bridge Song" Simon and Garfunkel

OH! Inchworm! I loved that song!

In elementary school (Michigan) we also learned the "other" words to the Ohio State fight song. These were the years when Woody was the coach. We'd always practice it the week before the Michigan/Ohio state game!

I will be singing 50-nifty-united-states for the rest of the night now! It hasnt been that long since I was in elementry school music class, and my dad was (still is) the teacher, so sometimes when I go by the school I hear the songs I used to sing!
I cant seem to remember any particular names right now, but we had some great ones!!

I can remember most of the ones that have been mentioned but in 5th / 6th grade we had to sing:

Bridge over troubled water
You Light Up My Life - by Debbie Boone (still absolutely HATE that song)
Scarborough Fair ( the song by Simon & Garfunkle)

I had a great music teacher in Elementary school. She had her quirks though. For some reason she taught us the words to all the big football school's fight songs. I can still remember the words to the "On Wisconson" like it was yesterday.....

She was also a big fam of anything patriotic. Still though, it was all that music and the 4th and 5th grade choir that got me started on my love of singing. I still sing in a choir today.

Thanks Mrs. O'Brien......

Might be strictly a PA song-not sure.

I was about to post that I must be everyone's "long lost elementary music teacher" since I taught most of the songs you all are remembering! The I saw this post and laughed right out loud. I am originally from Punxsutawney and my Dad was a member of the Inner Circle (the guys you see in the top hats on all the Groundhog Day TV shots). When I was a child -- many eons ago, it seems -- we had no Groundhog Day songs! I would have taught this one if we had. Thanks for the chuckle.

In addition to "Erie Canal, Fifty Nifty United States, Don Gato, This Land is Your Land," I thought I was a really "happenin' teacher" because we also had "Yellow Submarine, La Bamba" and a few other "contemporary" songs like that!

Thanks for a great thread... it brought back good memories from 30 + years ago!

We had some ones I loved!

"We're going to the shuckin' if the corn, we're going to the shuckin' of the corn. Shuckin' of the corn and a-blowing of the horn......oh we're going to the shuckin' of the corn!

"Three pirates came to London Town yo ho, yo ho.....three pirates came to London Town to see the king put on his crown....."

Jimmy Crack Corn

If you have a nickle you can buy a popsicle....(as he runs down the street with his dingalingalingaling, all the children start running and then they all begin to sing)

Take some butter eggs and flour...everything you need this hour...that's the way to do it do it...that's the way to do it!

Oh and at Halloween....

Stirring and stirring and stirring our brew....ooo...oooo.

Boy, your music teacher had the good song book.;)

I bet you didn't have to sing,

Oh where have you been Billy Boy, Billy Boy?
Oh where have you been charming Billy?
I went down to take a wife, she's the joy of my life
She's a young thing and cannot leave her mother.

And to those of you with the "hip" music teachers - I bet you never sang this"

There's a hole in the bucket dear Liza, dear Liza
There's a hole in the bucket dear Liza, a hole...:p

Yes, we even sang that with the "hip" stuff.

I do remember doing the Bump and the Hustle as well in music class.

"Do the Hustle!

Well, children. . . :)

As a music teacher myself, I can say I am so glad that you all remember your music classes. I am smiling from ear to ear to know that we music teachers at least taught you some things that you remember.

I teach elementary music and believe me, those songs go through my head for months after I teach them in class.

These days we aren't doing the hustle, but the Cha Cha Slide!!

I remember from my days in the 70's and early 80's:

Jimmy Crack Corn
There's a Hole in the Bucket
This Land is Your Land
Make New Friends
Billy Boy

And from my 5th Grade Christmas musical I was a reindeer and we were planning on leaving Santa and getting jobs. I remember singing and can still sing to this day "We'll get a job, a job, that's what we'll do, a job a job, something brand new, a job a job, now right away. We'll all get jobs today!!!" :)

I love this thread! My first thought was also "Senor Don Gato" - the girls used to cry. My favorite was Erie Canal though.

I was singing the words to a song from my 5th grade musical (30+ years ago) the other day and my dh thought I was nuts.

12 years ago when I was teaching I used to carpool with the music teacher. I talked her into singing "Senor Don Gato" with the kids. She, of course, told them how much I loved that song. So, even though I taught first grade I'd see sixth graders in the hall and they'd roll their eyes and sing it at me. They though it was stupid - can you imagine?!

"The Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria
were sailing vessels three
they hoisted their sails from the harbor of Palos
to cross the western sea
Columbus was their captain bold, a might sailer he"

and Celito Lindo (Linda?), in English

and way back to about second grade:
"Dan Dan Daniel was a Span Span Spanial
A pretty little Cocker pup
With flop flop floppy ears
And whist whist whistful eyes
And great big paws!:
and
"Little Ducky Duddle went wading in a puddle
went wading in a puddle quite small
He said, 'To me it doesn't matter, how much I splash and splatter, I'm only a little ducky after all!'

And I remember doing Billy Boy and Jimmy Crack Corn.

Grinning ghost, don't worry, I remember Polly Wolly Doodle All The Day and Billy Boy. (I was madly in love with Billy in my class so I LIKED singing this song!)

I also remember a song that went something like this:

3 Drummer boys from battle were returning
3 Drummer boys from battle were returning
a rat tat rat tat ta boom
from battle were returning.

Oh Susanna and Jennie Jenkins--

Will you wear red, oh my dear, oh my dear?
Will you wear red, Jennie Jenkins?
No, I won't wear red, it's the color of my head
I'll buy me a fol-de-rol-dy, til-de-tol-dy
Seek-a-double, use-a-cause-a, roll-a-find-me
Roll, Jennie Jenkins, roll.

In 5th/6th grade we song "Feel'in Groovy" and some Olivia Newton John stuff. I had a man teacher at that time. I bet he had a crush on her! LOL

I remember singing a lot of those already mentioned. Another one that sticks in my head is

Daisy, Daisy, give me your answer true
I'm half crazy, all for the love of you
It won't be a stylish marriage
???????
But you'll look sweet,
Upon the seat, of a bicycle built for two.

My mind just went totally blank on that missing line-something about a horse and carriage. Guess I need another cup of coffee.

I recall really liking Tumbalalaika, and many others. :)

You Light Up My Life - by Debbie Boone (still absolutely HATE that song)

Oh God! My school did that too! That was torture! Why did they abuse us with that awful song?? lol
