Philaround -- I kind of wondered that myself, I didn't think of it at the time the guide told us the story or I would have asked.

The whole thing sounded fishy to me. As wonderful as Disney is, they do have a very weird way of protecting it's image.

I just thought I'd pass along what I've heard. I doubt we'll ever know the true reason it hasn't been released.

Maybe what Disney should do is offer it as a mail order type thing. People who want it can get it, and those who may be offended (rightly or wrongly, I've never seen it and can't comment) don't have to have it in their faces at every store in the country.

So what is the website that have the DVD version available for $25? I haven't seen this movie in years and my DDs have never seen it. Would be fun to see something that I hadn't seen since my childhood. I love the songs!

Not only do they play it on Splash mountain, they have the songs excerpted on their singalong series as peg2001 said. What a bunch of baloney!

Each time this comes up on the boards, many people say their kids don't understand the story behind the ride and don't know the characters.

I wonder how many people would be angry if Disney made a new movie with BR, BF, and BB. This won't solve the problem of not
releasing SOTS, but it may enhance kids enjoyment of the ride.

The only reason I suggested this is because I don't recall any parts of the ride that included Uncle Remus or any of the other actors from the movie.

Well, I finally obtained my copy of SOTS on DVD-R, and the sound and picture quality were both very good-even better than I expected! I absolutely LOVED the movie. It was a very good blend of both reality and cartoon. I didn't see anything offensive at all. If you turn on MTV any day of the week, you'll see things a million times more offensive than this innocent movie. I won't spoil anything, but I was crying at the end (as I do with all Disney movies )
Now I finally know the stories of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, and Brer Bear (Isn't Brer Bear the cutest?) and I can confidently ride SM now without any confusion!

Uncle Remus wasn't a slave at the time of the setting of the story; he was a free man, a sharecropper. Certainly, the definition of "free" in the deep south in those days was tainted. Nonetheless, Uncle Remus was not a slave at the time the story was set.

Perhaps Disney feels that the movie, if released, would probably create more trouble for them than they feel it would be worth.

Personally, I think there would be fringe criticism. However, if done in a dignified way, as the work of art that it is, it would be fine (in my opinion).

By the way, Disney has had Sing-A-Longs out for years with Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah in it, accompanied by clips from the film with Uncle Remus and the children together.

If they were going to ban something for being offensive, I'd think it would be Peter Pan. Since they didn't ban that, SOTS would have to be pretty bad. It seems like most of you here didn't find it offensive though. Weird stuff.

Is there any website that tells the story of the movie so that I can understand SM, but for free?

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I thought ressurecting it would be preferable to y'all than starting a whole new thread on the same topic. Hope so! (If not, please teach me the proper etiquitte for the Dis- I'm still learning! )

I agree with you. MTV and now even VH1 I find a WHOLE LOT MORE offensive than anything Disney has ever done. The good ol USA as someone wrote has got its morals all messed up IMO. I think anybody God fearing or with a little decency would agree with me.
Our schools dont want us to know the truths about the history of USA, they want the sanitized version. Yes we had a Civil War, yes we had slavery, was it right, no, but we had it all the same. Hollywood has created this image that all people in the South are ignorant. I myself may be included in that category. But believe me, I know some very smart, intelligient people who are from the Southern states. For those who believe the Hollywood version of Southernism, you may be the ignorant one.
Now that I have had my rant....SOTS I fortunately own 2 copies and my kids love the movie as much as any other Disney classic. It is one of the best animated/live action films of all time.
Maidmarion, what is offensive about Peter Pan? Just wondering.

I can answer the Peter Pan question.

That movie has always offended me and it is my least favorite Disney movie, by far!

I do not like the way Native Americans/Indians are portrayed in the film nor do I care for the depiction of women. I think women and Native Americans are stereotyped. The message of the film, to me, is 'boys will be boys and women will be mommys (or jealous shrews).'

I'm sure someone will say I'm being PC or I should 'lighten up', but I have always (as an adult) had that reaction to the film.
