"From what I've read, the problem is that there are slaves and they are shown as being happy in their condition. What they don't take into account is that the movie is set in post Civil War and the slaves are more like employees, just as the railroads and coal mines, who lived and worked together and had most if not all needs met by their employer. Not the best arrangement no matter what race, or ethnic background."
BINGO! I have this movie, and it clearly takes part AFTER the Civil War. Characters talk about "leaving" the farm, etc. Interesting era that kids, and adults including me, do not know much about. Logically, all former slaves after the war, did not walk off their farms one day never to return......... Where would they all go?
