Son swallowed a marble

My son is 8........old enough to know better! Last night he said he stuck a marble in his mouth and accidently swallowed it. Our doctor is out until Monday. He is acting and feeling fine. He has had two bowel movements but there wasn't a sign of said marble yet.
My DH thinks it could cause problems. I will obviously call the doctor on Monday morning or sooner if there is any sign of stomach pain, fever, etc. Is this something I should be more concerned about before Monday?

he should be fine.. just watch for it to pass and also any other symptoms that it is somehow stuck somewhere.. stomach pains, etc..

I have had two friends whos children have done this. Although it was ball bearings in both cases and not marbles..

I know in both cases it took 4 days for the offending object to reappear!

They also said, that it was not necessary to keep a "close eye" on the situation.. it was very obvious when it came out as there was an almighty klunk!

My DD swallowed a dime when she was about ten (more than old enough to know better). When I asked her what on earth she had a dime in her mouth for, she kind of smiled and said that she "just did". The doctor said that it would be fine and not to worry about it. We didn't watch for it, but she's 18 now and none the worse for it. (She did give up coins after that though! )

My daughter swallowed a small toy and they had me go to the ER for a barium swallow for her. Sometimes it can get stuck further down and cause an obstruction that can be harmful. I would call the oncall Dr. Good luck.

I think a marble would be fine. A few months ago my son swallowed what we thought was a small screw. I called the nurse on-call and she told me it should be fine as long as he can eat something soft (like bread) and drink some water. The bread would help force it down into the stomach so it wouldn't get lodged. We never saw it pass, but I did find the next day in his diaper a foil candy wrapper. So, we're assuming that's what we saw in his mouth. A marble would go down nice and easy.

My DD(10) did the exact same thing at 8, but it was also a ball bearing. My doctor's office said it could take up to a week to pass and not to bring her in until then if it hadn't. After day 3 or 4, she had not had a movement for 24 hours, so I panicked about an obstruction and brought her into the ER. The x-ray showed it as clear as day still in the lower curve of her stomach, so they sent us home to let it pass on its own. Here was my mistake, I was feeding her foods to "loosen" her up, soup, prunes and etc. Everything was just "passing by". I took her home that night and stuffed her with a cheeseburger, fries, a malt and everything else we could get in her. Out it came the next afternoon! It just needed a good push.

Dont' worry too much.....iut'll be fine......my DS did the same thing when he was in first grade.......the doctor said just to watch for it to come out.....after about a week they x-rayed him & it was still there....it took about 10 days to finally appear.

My DS swallowed a penny about 6 weeks ago. I posted my saga on Poop Patrol on the DDA thread. Hence my new tag! It should be fine, but you do need to make sure it passes. At least he's old enough to do his own checking!

Thanks everyone. I will call the doc on Monday just to make sure I don't need to do anything but at this point, I feel confident that this isn't an emergency. I am hopeful he has learned a lesson but I am not betting on it! Here's hoping everything comes out fine ;-)

My mother said when she was little she loved swallowing things.....pennies, marbles, really anything small. She said her reason was she liked the way it felt.
