Best wishes to your son and you. My 7 yo DD had her tonsils and adenoids removed in Jan. and I know how scared I felt to put her through surgery and I can sympathize with what you are feeling.

Now DD had hers removed for sleep apnea and as another poster suggested drinking is so important after the surgery. Our children's hospital actually had a Wawa icee machine right there and 15 minutes after waking up from the anesthesia she was drinking a blue rasberry icee! She had several at the hospital and more over the next several days and they seemed to really help!!

My prayers will be with your entire family tomorrow! Our youngest dd had her tonsils & adenoids out in October last year. She did fine but I second the suggestion on keeping them drinking fluids. It really did help her throat pain. Also, do not be alarmed by the horrible breath he will have after the surgery. It was quite shocking for me (lasted about two weeks until all the scabs were off) and I took her back in twice just to have the doctor reassure me it was completely normal.

Thank you for all the good thoughts and prayers. We are going to Doernbecher's in Portland. We live in eastern oregon so we will have long drive home this evening. I just googled 7-11 for on the way home thanks for the suggestions. He loves slurpee's or one at home will get to see us regularly for the next two weeks or so.

I feel so thankful that I have such a wonderful place to gain reassurance and great ideas. I will update after we get home late this evening.

Well, we made it home, Long long day..... DS15 is very sick, nausea and vomiting and ick.... we are trying to ride it out but, the Dr. said we might have to rehospitalize him if it doesn't turn around. I is a very thin person and dehydration has plagued him in the past with illness. Hopeing tonight will turn a corner and we will be able to keep stuff down.

I don't quite understand why they sent us home with the threat of rehospitalization knowing we live 4 hours from there. I think unfortunately it is an insurance issue. BC/BS probably has a time limit they will let him stay unless they send him home and rehospitalize for something else. Who knows.

Any insight or ideas are greatly appreciated. He is hurting because we can't keep pain med. down and so he doesn't want to drink (although I am being the cheerleader and encouraging strongly). Then he vomits anyway sooooooo.... help........ time is what the oncall doctor says, pretty much says we have to wait until he doesn't use the bathroom for 24 hours.....

I have tried ginger ale for the nausea, any ideas....

I am the other poster whose DD7 was having surgery the same day. I am so sorry to hear about the vomiting. Can they give him a suppository for it? What about over the counter Emetrol (sp?) Bless his heart, I hope things turn around for you guys.

Thank you for caring, how is DD7???? We live in rural oregon and there isn't a pharmacy open until tomorrow. We will talk about a suppository tomorrow the surgeon said. I have never heard of Emetrol.... I will go look at Walmart for it. He being 15 won't be thrilled with a suppository but, will welcome the relief of feeling sick. Thank you for the idea.

Emetrol is an anti-naseau that used to be by prescription only, i know of it because my co-worker uses it alot. I know suppositories are not what anyone wants but if it keeps you out of the hospital. I almost hate to say how well DD is doing because I am afraid I will jinx her. After reading all of the things to possibly expect after the surgery and having had another child have the surgery at the same age, i am shocked at how well she is doing. I have had no problems getting her to eat and drink. She is just driving me crazy because she is so bored and wants to run and play.

Oh, good it sounds like he may be on the upswing!!! I think the Emetrol only comes in a liquid. I think DD7 is doing extremely well because my DD14 was 7 when she had her surgery and did not do this well. Well glad to hear fromyou and hope you have a great Easter too. We will be attending our annual family picnic. Of course DD7 will be limited to sitting and playing.

My thoughts are with you! DS8 has had many surgeries and this week, DH had his tonsils out and his nose fixed. My thoughts and prayers are with you! It will be worth it in the end.

Just wanted to chime in on the good wishes for your son. Hopefully he will improve a bit every day.

I am a pediatric RN and work on our "observation/short stay" unit at our local children's hospital. We get a LOT of tonsil removals. I am so surprised with the vomiting and the fact that you were 4hrs away that they could not justify your stay to your insurance company. Plus with his tonsils as bad as you reported they could have easily done a few doses of IV antibiotics and justified it as well. Most insurance companies will allow a patient to be in observation status for 48 hrs before an inpatient reason is required. Anyway, just keep encouraging him to drink/eat anything that sounds good. Popsicles and jello count as liquid too. So if all he can keep down is one of those as long as he continues to have urine output they you will be pretty okay. The first 48hrs are usually the hardest. I know it is very painful and the older you get the harder it seems to be, but He must continue to drink if at all possible. Keep his pain medications every four hours for at least 72hrs. If you feel comfortable for some of our kids we have them alternate between their prescription pain med (usually capitol/tylenol with codeine/T3) and Ibuprofen. However some doctors are not fans of using ibuprofen, so use your best judgement. Question- is he on liquid pain med? No matter age we use liquid because it is usually easier then pills to swallow. Some kids do request pills though.

A thought I am having is maybe it is your prescription pain medicine that is making him sick. If it is tylenol with codeine you could try regular tylenol to see if it helps with the vomiting. We do have some kids on lortab elixir when they have issues, but our docs don't like to use it due to the alcohol baseand burning going down on those open sites. You could ask for a phenergan suppository prescription to help with the vomiting. They will probably make him sleepy, but phenergan seems to work the best with our post-op tonsil removals. If you feel at anytime he is worse, take him to your local hospital and have him bolused with IV fluids and get him some IV meds for his vomiting.

Just a note on the gingerale...after dd's tonsils came out we were told no carbonated drinks. Something to do w/ healing and the scabs. You might want to check and see what your doctor advises on that one. And definitely avoid anything citrus, spicey or salty. I was looking for our aftercare sheet but cannot find it but I do remember those. Hopefully he'll rest well tonight and be able to keep liquids down tomorrow.
