Dr. read us the results this afternoon. He is so upset. He is a runner on his high school cross country and track teams and was chosen to run the state meet on Sunday. Now no running for a whole month. Not only that but no skateboarding or surfing either. This is my extremely active 15yo son, he will be miserable. There is some concern about losing his running fitness over the month so he has to bike and swim instead. Does anybody have any experience with this.

Sorry to hear that it was a fracture after all. I have no experience with stress fractures.

I lost one of my 8th grade BB players to a stress fracture about a week ago. He was one of my starplayers and we were in the running to win the championship of the league. He plays on two teams...the drs. said he is done with any basketball for at least two months. He had done it in a game with the traveling team then came and played for me and Rolled the ankle again. I was unaware of the previous injury. At his age, which is 13, or even a little older, nothing is worth playing or risking hurting it more. They are young and thier bodys will heal, providing coaches and parents stress that to them. He showed up a few days later and was wanting to play with it, I told him and his parents in no uncertain terms I would not allow it. There is always next year, especially at thier young ages. I know how frustrated they get :( I hope he heals up soon. :)

Poor guy :( What a tough time for this to happen. Give him lots of hugs (if he'll take them at 15, lol.)

CRB - nope no hugs, he won't even talk about it.
Patrick - stress fractures are a tricky thing. I saw two boys on my son's team who went back too soon and got a second fracture. The bench mark for a healed stress fracture is no pain. You can't resume your activity until there is no pain at all. You can do things that don't hurt though. So, if running hurts but walking doesn't you can walk. My son is quite good and has started to get interest from colleges. He really wants to get in a good spring track season. We were fortunate that we caught this really early. It is barely showing up on the mri's and looks more like an inflamation on the bone.
Good move on keeping the boy off the courts Patrick. I wish my son's coach took a tougher stance with the injured kids, but it is high school. The parents have to be the bad guys.
