Something In My Wreath

we had a bird in our wreath one year....I found out when my dh and I came home from an early NYE dinner and it flew in the house as we opened the door....

It was a pretty purple finch ( I think) and was so pretty and frightened...

My DS wanted to keep it as a pet...

MY Sister told me how to catch it...just FTR...gently toss a lightweight sheet over it as it is flying...it will come down to the floor with the sheet and you gently gather it up and release it outside...

We got some great pics of it perched on our Christmas Tree.....

Try sprinkling the wreath with garlic powder and crushed hot peppers. The garlic will keep the bats away and the hot pepper bothers the birds.

Last weekend we had a bird fly into the foyer that had been sitting on the wreath. Luckly we were able to get the little fellow out unharmed.

If it is a bat it really isn't something to worry about. Most bats are harmless. JUSt leave it alone and it will leave you alone.

A friend of mine's mother had a bird build a nest in her Christmas wreath. She left it up right through the early spring. I believe they were purple finches. She had a window on the door above the wreath and she could look into the nest whenever she wanted to. It was really amazing.

The entire time they were there she simply used the back door.

I just went out to check the wreath. I went around from the back so I wouldn't disturb it. Nothing there! Of course, tonight I have the Christmas lights on. I didn't turn them on last night because we were gone early in the evening and it was raining. I'll check back later.

Talking Hands, I don't care if it is a bat. I don't plan on bothering it as long as it doesn't keep flying into my head when I open the door.

Whatever it is is just mad at you for taking his ESPN magazine!!

Of course, it touched my hair. Which I have since touched. I hope it didn't slober on me or anything.

thats not slober :teeth:

I always get a birds nest in my wreath. Its a little disconcerting when you have to take it down, i always wonder where the poor homeless bird will go.

That would totally give me the creeps....having something hit me in the head & not know what it is. I think I'd have to leave my house via the garage instead of the front door.

Me too! Feralpeg, did you ever find out what is in your wreath?

we have small birds build a nest in our wreath EVERY year! They will even lay eggs there. It's a nice cozy place out of the wind I guess.

I can't tell you how many times a bird has scared the bejeezus out of me. Our mailbox is on the side of the house by the front door. I have a habit of reaching out the door and into the box without looking. One day I was feeling around in there and something moved so I peeked out when a bird flew right at me. I screamed like banshee and ran in the house. They also nest under out window air conditions. Man, I have several stories about that! I may just have to start a thread, lol.

On another note....When we got married we had a wooden plaque made with our names on it. It was hanging above the mailbox. I kept hearing a buzzing sound for days. I finally lifted the plaque and found that a bumble bee was burrowing into the back of it. I had no idea they did that!! I removed the plaque for now. Anyone have any idea how to keep them away?? I want to hang it back up. :confused3

What was in the wreath?!? What was in the wreath?!? Do I have to come down there and find out for myself! Do I have to leave all this cold and snow and come down to warm, sunny Florida to find out what was in that darn wreath!?!
