metro - glad to hear all is well in the motherland, cool off down there yet?
Some...but not a lot. We are getting much needed rain every afternoon and there's talk of a new tropical depression that might be an issue by the end of the week. But...other than that nothing really changed...yet.

probably the only reason i don't plan on retiring to FL, i'm chicken.

it's already been way too active season for my liking, let it all stay out in the ocean:goodvibes this year.

Costa Maya lost their port, out of commission for 6 to 8 months, Belize having issues too - supposed to rebound in a few weeks. I feel so bad for the people there who rely on the tourists; not much else in the way to eek out a living.

Since most folk in FL don't have basements, always wondered where you're supposed to go to seek shelter in case of an "event"? Friends were at the AS Sports few years ago late Aug/early Sept (05?); they were just told to sit it out in the hotel room.:confused3

I was at work on 9/11.
I remember it was a beautifull late summer day.
My second day back after vacation.
we always stayed at work during storms and whatnot and they sent us home. i knew it was worse than it sounded on the radio. I got home, and just sat down and cried. Life has NOT been the same since for anyone. Damn Terrorists!!!!

My nephew went to Iraq yesterday.
My brother was in the first gulf war.
Thank you to all who have served, or who serve now. :grouphug:

my son almost made it to iraq. he was activated national guard during college and left day after he graduated.
bad thing and good thing, he never made it over seas. ended up with a medical discharge.

he got hit by a tank in the final days of retraining and has 4 herniated discs still.

he still wanted to go and serve.

metro - glad to hear all is well in the motherland, cool off down there yet?

marci - did u graduate from the academy? i'm old, never knew a woman in[/B] the service, let alone one who was assigned to the war zone...you go girl!:cheer2: Very neat photo OP with the Pres! DH was on carrier in NY harbor for the '76 celebration, met Pres. Ford - now i know 2 people who have rubbed elbows with the boss(es)

my mom served in the army air corp during war time.
she trained in florida. she joined 4 weeks after she got married and served 3 years.
dad was at biloxi before he was shipped out.

Some...but not a lot. We are getting much needed rain every afternoon and there's talk of a new tropical depression that might be an issue by the end of the week. But...other than that nothing really changed...yet.

todd..........help me with the weather forecast.
what is gonna happen when i get to orlando?
9/24 - 10/8

Loved the wedding pics, everyone!

Tracie, who is Kbean? Is that Bean #1? I get confused! I loved the pic in the cemetery!

Marcie and Tricia, loved your pics too! Marcie, it rained the morning of our ceremony, and I was so sulky because we had a Plan B, but I didn't like Plan B, and it cleared just enough to do the wedding outside. I am glad it cleared enough for you to get outside pics, because although they say rain on your wedding day is good luck, every bride knows that's just a load of garbage. Tricia, your tent looks similar to ours. I am anxious to hear more about your nephew's wedding plans, although I am sure I can get constant updates from their wedding site!

I am embarrassed to say where I was on 9/11, but I will anyway: I was in bed, sleeping. I was scheduled to be at work, but had gotten up at 4 am and called out because I'd had a very restless night and just didn't feel like working that day.

Mike called me sometime around 9 to make sure I knew (we were not married then). He had just come home from working midnights, and called me to say "Are you still in bed? Put on the news."

I actually told him I didn't feel like looking for the remote to turn on the TV (heaven forbid I should get OUT of bed); just tell me what happened. He said that a plane hit the WTC.

My first thought was that it was some little glider plane that probably took out a window, and I hoped no one was hurt.

Honestly, had we not been going through a cesspool of news reporting lately with Chandra Levy 24x7 and Gary Condit's whereabouts every 2 hours? Plus just days before Fox and CNN had breaking news of a small plane that couldn't get its landing gear down and they filmed the landing for about 30 minutes (the landing turned out to be uneventful and safe). I thought that was the caliber of news being reported.

Mike was annoyed with me (and rightly so) and told me to put on the news when I got up because they would still be reporting it then.

Of course he was right, and when I finally did put on the news, I had to tell myself to breathe. Then I felt like a total moron for not listening to Mike in the first place. I could not believe the magnitude of what had happened. First I called to see where my brother was because he commutes between NJ/NY and San Fran regularly. Then I called work around 10 to see if they needed me to come in. We do surveillance of and control telecommunications. There was nothing left to surveil because we had many switches in the WTC that took out communications. The best they could do was try to allow as many calls to complete out of the NY area as possible.

Then I spent the next week glued to the TV, going through at least a box and a half of tissues a day.

Tricia - loved your pics too! Come on - everyone else - time for your pics too! Oh, and Tricia - I hope the meds help out some. If it's not better in 48 hours or so, I'd definitely call the doc again because it should be helping by then. If not, I always think of these Readers' Digest stories where they always start out "I thought I had a stomach bug/flu, etc." and then it turns out to be some weird thing no one's ever heard of that "if we'd only caught right away I would have been fine". Okay, I'm weird - I'm sorry! :rotfl:

Keisha - yep, I'm a West Pointer. As is DH, if you didn't figure that out. Classes of 88 and 86 respectively. Oldest DS's goal is to get into the Air Force Academy.

As far as 9/11, I was home too. I was subbing that year as well, but not on that day. DH called me to tell me to start watching. Maybe a half hour later, I got a call from our church. I was teaching religious ed that year as well, and they had all these stupid planning questions for me. I was kind of watching the TV in the background and trying to figure out if they even knew what was happening yet, and if so, if they really thought this was that important. (Didn't ask, but don't think they did).

I called the school (kids were in 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade) to ask if I should get them and they said it was up to me. Since I couldn't believe anyone would go attack a suburb of Detroit next, I didn't. Went in about a half hour before the end of the day to do some stuff at the school and realized at that point, as Keisha said, that there were hardly any kids left in the classes. The older 2 were pretty aware of what was going on at the time and over the next weeks (not in school - oldest DS had heard that a plane crashed, but that was it), but youngest DS only vaguely remembers the day "they watched videos in school all day".

When I got there, I'd walked by my 3rd graders' room and saw his teacher and she asked if I wanted to take him. I said sure, but was heading to the workroom to do some laminating. When he walked in there with me, they had a small TV on in there. One of the 5th grade teachers just started screaming at my son to get out. When she realized he was with me she apologized, but I have to say that if that's how the teachers were reacting to the kids, maybe they should have just had them all go home.

Another wacky thing was that oldest DS (then 9) was on a travel soccer team for the first time. We really didn't know if soccer would be canceled due to this, so called the coach (pretty much everything else in the rest of the world was, including professional sports). He was like "yeah, why wouldn't we have practice?" I was like, "Um, maybe because of everything at the World Trade Center today?" and he said something along the lines of "Oh, well, of course if that affected you personally or something, I guess your son can miss practice". I was just like "Is there anyone who this SHOULDN'T affect personally?"

Anyways, we went to practice and pretty much all the parents stayed and just talked. It was a beautiful day that day in Michigan too (I know you always hear how nice it was in NY that day), and it was just eerie sitting there with our kids the only ones outside and no planes at all flying overhead.

Meanwhile, my brother was in DC at the time for a job interview. When I called my mom to make sure he was okay, she was like "Oh, I'm sure he's fine. He's not actually in DC, he's in Arlington." Hated to break the news to her that the Pentagon was also in Arlington! He was nearby and saw all the smoke and commotion, but of course was fine (but of course we didn't know at the time what extent the damages were!).

Wonderful wedding pics!! Gets me soo excited!

I'm planning on having a small wedding party, MOH and 1 BM and the DF is following suit. Unless of course, the homies come down and be the drunken BMs or maybe even FGs ;)

Two days until Williamsburg!! :woohoo:

todd..........help me with the weather forecast.
what is gonna happen when i get to orlando?9/24 - 10/8
By that time...hopefully the weather will have cooled down and the MAJOR threat of a hurricane will be minimal. We can still get storms during that time but August and September are the two big months for activity because of the water temps. I remember in 2005 at HHN, we got some of the rain from Hurricane Wilma but nothing like South Florida. We will still have the thunderstorms but not in any kind of pattern like summer. Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for a nice evening on 10/4. :thumbsup2

We usually have the shelters open if it's warranted. They open the schools for shelters but I'm the type of person that would rather be at home than at a shelter. If there's a Cat 5 storm coming, then I'm hitting the road and will head away from the area. :scared:

Anyone else having fun with their kids' homework? I just wrote a report on JFK in Spanish! Joy! Learned more than I wanted to about JFK and Spanish! :lmao:

I feel like an outcast here :lmao: I am not a woman, and I can't find wedding pics to scan and post (I'm sure my better half knows where they are!)

On 9-11 6 years ago we were having birthday cake in the breakroom at work (yes, today is my birthday) and someone came up the steps and told us, well, that put a damper on the festivities real fast. Birthdays haven't been the same since, it's hard to fathom that it's been 6 years already!

Raven....didn't know your poor son couldn't serve :sad2: How upset he must have been  I just hope he isn't plagued with a bunch of problems that just worsen for the rest of his life! Mummy-dust!

And while on the subject....to everyone who has served, or has/had a loved one serving....THANK YOU!!!! They are very brave and admirable for their sacrifice!

Janet....a "starter" husband??? :confused3 :lmao: It's not a "house" we're talkin' about.... :rolleyes1 You just jealous I got it right the first time and didn't no 'starter' nothin! :thumbsup2 But, like you said, for some peeps, 'practice makes perfect' :goodvibes So, you lost the port on your cruise....what are they offering in it's place?? Where are you stopping???

Spidey7....love the new tag :woohoo: Congrats to you!!!

Hey Sharon....I agree with you on Tricia's comment:
RVGal said:
ONCE! I talked about poop ONCE and I get branded as the poop lady.
I think THAT should be a tag for her :lmao:

Tricia...you had the premo wedding.....fancy ceremony and casual reception!!! And beautiful pictures too! You are not going to believe this, but I also wore tennis shoes that day :lmao: I am serious....I am NOT kidding!! I didn't fancy them up, just wore new ones and white ankle socks! Hello to RoseMarie, damo, and whoever else that is 'lurking' and not 'posting'....not meant to leave you out intentionally :grouphug:

My toe is better today. Had flipflops on (cuz sneakers hurt) and with the rain today, it was damp. Put the heat on in my car, and the heat must have helped it :confused3 But, it's not pretty colors, but it still hurts (not throbs) and it's swollen, but definately better than yesterday :yay:

Bubba was the 'senior student' in karate class tonite (meaning, he was the only blackbelt....others were lower ranks and recommended blackbelts)....he was so funny...bein' "all that" But, he was a good example to "look up to" for the lower ranks, and that's what he's supposed to be :thumbsup2

Other than the heater being cleaned....not much else exciting today..... how 'bout you???

homies, that sounds like an invite to me !!!

:scratchin me too

no matter what, i want to say happy birthday to you.

I'll second that...... Hope your special day of celebrating you, can bring a moment of joy on this sad day of days.....

I remember where I was on 9/11

I was at Adelphi University. I had a tennis class (for PE) at 8 am. Had tennis then immediately went to my Art class. While on the elevator, a girl asks me, "did you hear a plane went into the WTC?" I responded "no" and just assumed it was a small engine plane. After, I went to my Intro to Health Ed. class. The professor began mentioning that we shoudl pray for all the people involved in the accident. I still had no idea what was going on. After class, I walked over to the University Center where everyone is just stopped and staring. I look at the hanging televisions. I see the plan go into the building (not sure if it was the 1st or 2nd) and moments later the towers collapse. I was in shock.

I just watched and thought to myself, my god, my father! My dad works for the MTA in the city. He rides the subways all the time and he can be anywhere in the city. I immediately call my mom and she tells me that dad is home and is fine and that I should just head home after class. Evening classes were cancelled for the day, and my coach cancelled swim practice. The highways in the city and Long Island were all closed and I had to take side streets to get home.

The next day, I go to class, and come home. My father has to run an errand and I go with him. At this point, the highways were reopened. I asked him to take a drive down to Long Beach (a small city on the southern most shore on Long Island). As you drive along the parkway, you see the bays and ocean and in the distance, Manhattan. I remember looking out at the polluted island and not seeing those two towers for the first time in my life...just smoke.

Ironically, two days prior to the attacks, I had worked as a lifeguard down in Long Beach. As I headed home on that Sunday, with my fiance driving, I looked out at Manhattan and actually thought to myself (and this is 100% true), "it would be so weird if they weren't there." That was the last time I saw them.

Sorry I rambled a little there...but I live only about a half an hour commute to the city. I have family and friends that were so very close to it. In fact, my cuz's BF's father died that day.

OMG...that IS freaky :scared: ......and sad....I'm sorry for your BF that day

It seems the one consistant in todays stories, are nobody thought "big" plane....everyone thot "small" .... :scratchin

Alison...how'd the hair turn out???

DH loves the color!! I've been using the same color for a while and this time it turned out lighter than it ever has. I went and got it cut today (DH hasn't seen it yet....I went from down my back to shoulder length...)I like it! :thumbsup2 I desperately needed it cut!!! Had some really bad ends goin' on and men just don't understand needing to keep the stringies controlled, with all this chemical processing that I do.....He'll be home in a couple hours and he might just think he's crawling in bed with a new woman.....

Jodie, Marcie, Tracie, Tricia: I enjoyed your wedding pictures! Janet, I enjoyed seeing your son's wedding pic too! You all look so beautiful in your weddings! I don't have a scanner (yet..it's on the list of things to get!) or I would post mine, yes, I am like Marcie and got married before the age of the digital camera (heck our computer didn't even have a hard drive back then!).

I married my high school sweetheart  We met when I was in the 9th grade and he was in the 10th grade and I chased him until I caught him (it took me a while, it was my junior year when I finally kept his attention!) We got married when he was in his third year of college. Sounds kind of like one of those fairy tales, doesn't it..... We've been together so long we can look at each other and tell what the other is going to say. Like (you guys will appreciate this!): The other day he said, "I think it's going to do the trick," and at the same time, we looked at each other and said, "I THINK IT'S GONNA WORK THIS TIME!":rotfl2: Then we laughed and I told the boys that me and dad had another of our "in sync" moments, and DH and I looked at each other and said, "Or was it a Back Street Boys moment?" :rotfl2: That may be one of those I guess you had to be there kind of things, but it was funny at the time!
