My sister in law can not find her daughters birth certificate. She is flying to North Carolina for a funeral. Will she need to show it for her daughter?

Each airline has its own policies on this and you haven't stated the age of the child or if this is a domestic flight (your sister is coming from another state inside the US)

If the child is under 2 and traveling as a lap baby, some airlines do require proof of age.

If the child is traveling with a youth or infant priced ticket, some airlines will require proof of age.

Of course to fly internationally you have to have a passport, but from your post, I assume this is a domestic flight.

Outside of the conditions above, there really usually isn't ID required for a child under 18. Best to call the airline to know for sure.

If there is a close relative like a grandparent is living in or near the county where the child was born, they could possibly get the BC at that county's court house for a fee and fax it to her.

I have been flying with DS 21 and DD 17 since they were babies and have NEVER been asked for a birth certificate. Although SWA MIGHT ask for your birth certificate if you have a "lap baby", I've actually never seen it happen (and we have flown SWA for years.)

She will only need it if the child is under 2 and flying as a lap baby
or flying on a child's fare.

The big one is if it is flying as a lap baby then she needs it. They will ask to see it and if she is on SW she won't get on without buying a ticket if she doesn't have it. They are real sticklers, had to show my 6 week old son's!

If over 2 and not on a special fare she doesn't need any ID for a child, none.

My daughter is 4, starting flying at 8 months and I have never been asked to provide a birth certificate.

The only time you would need a birth cert would be to verify age. And that would be o ly if a special age related fare had been purchased, or it was a lap baby.
