DD11 came home from school with a lexile score and no explanation about what it means. I looked it up and it looks pretty high, but I remember when I was a child and we took achievement tests and they always sent home notes saying that the scores don't really mean anything. Is this the same kind of thing?

I totally understand! Our school corp uses lexile to measure our childrens' reading abilities, too....

http://www.lexile.com/

This site will help you to understand better about lexile scoring and the levels/numbers your child come home with. It can also help you find appropriate reading materials geared towrds your childs ability and you can print off reading/book lists to take to the library/book store.

Thanks. I looked up that website and I am still confused. :confused3

What does it mean? DD basically chooses her own books based on likes and dislikes. How is this number supposed to help?

We use Accelerated Reader at our school, but this sounds similar. It will help your child because he/she can read for pleasure with books that are on the correct reading level, i.e. not too easy or difficult. Books are assigned a number and your child should choose books within a "range" (I think that website suggested 50 points above or below).
It's not so much a "grade" (such as did your child score higher than others or not) but rather a range for choosing books that are able to be read and comprehended while still presenting challenges.
