got a phone call from a friend this morning saying they got an email from me (which I didn't send) saying I was hurt and needed them to send money....well I tried to go on facebook and it said that another location tried to open my account and was I there??? I said no and reset my password but all my emails on my email account were gone???? I reset my passwords...anything else I should do??? and what does this mean???

My facebook was also hacked yesterday, I recieved an email notice of a purchase of chips for one of the facebook games ,I notified them of the fact that I did not purchase these, so they suspended my account and reversed the charge, but I did have to change my password on my account and email.

I don't play any games so no credit card was set up to it.

I haven't played any games recently either but they got into by email thru Facebook and then accessed my paypal account to make the $125 purchase. :scared1:

Mine was hacked a few months ago just like the OP's. They had gotten my email addy and changed it by 1 letter ~ really hard to notice unless you pay attention. They had changed something in my settings on my email so they got all my emails, too. My son does network security so he helped me to get it back on track. The FB thing didn't take long to get straight so it wasn't a big deal.

I changed every password on every site, called my bank to make sure no one had gotten into it, etc. I set up a new email and had my old email linked to it. I haven't had any problems since but I am religious about changing passwords now and don't use the same one for multiple accounts.

The most embarrrassing thing was people really thinking I needed money and sending me emails asking me about it.

the laughing face is what made me take it the way I did, as in ," ha ha ha yeah right"

anyway..............

Just beware this is the first time I have ever had a problem with facebook.

I've never been hacked. . .knock on wood. But just so you know, this is not uncommon. :( It's usually the sending out spam to all your friends type, but I've heard of the e-mail types like yours. I think the most recent one was whoever was hacked was supposedly in a foreign country and had their luggage stolen. . .asking their friends to wire them money. :sad2: Hackers. . .ugh!

A couple of months ago DH got an email from DS's former cub scout leader saying he and his wife were robbed at gunpoint at their hotel parking lot in London and that they luckily had their passports, but wallets, cell phones, etc.. were all stolen. The email said their flight back to the US was leaving in a few hours and they needed money to settle the hotel bill because the hotel would not let them leave.

So DH, who is an extremely smart person with a very high IQ (but not a lot of common sense sometimes :3dglasses), tells me about it saying how bad he felt. Right away, red flags were going off for me, so I told DH that it sounded like a scam.

First of all, we had not seen/spoke with the former scout leader in over 2 years.

2nd, someone was robbed in a hotel parking lot yet the hotel was getting greedy about not paying a bill???? I don't think so!! Also, hotels get your credit card info upon check in, so there would be no reason for them not to be able to check out.

It just all sounded fishy, so I googled it and sure enough it was a scam where the person's email was hacked. I told DH he'd be in big doo doo if I weren't around to handle the finances because the man has no idea how hotel bills are paid (among other things).

I had that happen to me. I got a bunch of phone calls from people concerned that something happened to me (it's nice to know you have friends!!) Anyway, check and re check all of your email accounts and settings. They got in and changed the email that you set for *did you forget your password??* so if I clicked on that the password would have been sent to a different email. My country and birthdate was changed it was a pain in the butt. I sat for no lie....3 hours on the phone with msn trying to fix it all out. They wiped out my email address book....horrible....

Same thing happened to my FB and email. There is an option that you have to go in and change, in your email account, in order to start getting your emails back again. The hackers know to go to this option so that your email account can continue to send out those bogus emails. I'll go check and see if I can remember what that option was. I'll come back here and let you know, op.

This happened to my DH at New Years.

A hacker broke into the servers of our email provider and;

*Took over DH's @msn email by changing the password (overnight while we slept)
*Sent out phony emails to all of contacts stating we were in Ireland stuck with no money and needed help
*Went to DH's FB and changed the email/password (since he had took over email account)
*Sent repeated messages and chats to all of his FB friends
*Finally - Transferred the FB account and all email contacts/messages over to a new dummy @hotmail account.

As we were on the phone with MSN getting them to send us a new password, it sent a notification to the @hotmail account...and the hacker was changing the password ahead of us.:mad::mad: DH told MSN - DO NOT send a notification because the hacker is receiving them!!!

In the end we finally gained access to the account and saw that he'd emptied out all of the emails/contacts. Although, MSN was able to retrieve everything, we've had a difficult time with the (now disabled) FB account which still is in dummy@hotmail. Thankfully - we had NO private information on the account; phone #'s, addresses, etc.

As of right now, we have done away with FB since it was easily hacked with an email address login.

OP, in yahoo mail, go to "options", and then go to "filters". Unless you yourself have set-up filters, there should be 0 (zero) filters showing. If there are filters showing up that YOU did not set-up, then you need to delete them. Otherwise, your emails will not show up, and I think the hacker can continue sending out bogus emails from your account.

Also wanted to add, sorry you're going through this.

Even though I freaked, DH cut up with his buddies asking if they were still planning to send some $$$. :rotfl::lmao::rotfl:

My facebook account has been hacked twice. The first time I only found out because my sister got an email from me to her school email account that was sent at about 2 in the morning. Turns out it was for a male enhancement item. I went into my sent email folder and found that they had sent similar emails to just about everyone in my address book, including my principal and vp. :headache:

It is not a guarantee that it won't happen, but when you log on, check the address bar to see if you are in a secure browsing session. It should say https instead of just http. If you use certain applications, they will prompt that you can't use them without going to the nonsecure version. I've heard that a lot of people have problems because of some of the apps. Status Shuffle is one that many have complained about.

This is especially true if you use facebook or other emails while at a public wireless site - like starbucks, McDonalds, etc.

Gawker article

A friend of mine did this once and was surprised at how many people weren't browsing securely.
