Someone convince me that the character MnG in DL are not awful, please.

A CM informs everyone that there is no line, that everyone should just crowd up on the character. The CMs tell us that if you want an autograph or photo with the character to just walk up and ask.

So, just in your defense, I definitely had a CM say this to us when meeting Oswald (a month ago). We weren't looking for him we were just in the same time & place as he was. He interacted with us for a bit, though it was lost on my dd (3) who embarrassingly said, "Bye Mickey Mouse!" as we were leaving.

I’m honestly thinking Moana was on her way to or from her set, as sometimes they try to squeeze in a few extra people at that point
That sounds likely to me too. It seems to me the character was roaming or they were walking to or from their set, and either they got randomly got mobbed (which I've never really seen happen, but I bet it does with rare or popular characters), or OP misinterpreted the crowd since it's not what they're used to. I sometimes see people gathered around a roaming character watching like you would with the roaming performers/musicians, but not necessarily expecting a "turn" since it's not a meet and greet. In fact I'm often part of that crowd but I'm definitely not there to meet the character, I just stop by to see what's happening. I see the formal meet and greets around the park all the time, and usually what I see is a brief bit of chaos when the character comes out (because people don't know where the line will be), but then CM's establish the line and closely monitor it, making sure it doesn't block walkways, etc. It seems orderly to me. Last time I actually waited in one, there were two CM's assigned just to monitor the line, one photo CM, and I think one handler for the characters.

Gaston is worth hunting for! My favorite is when he gets into it with other characters. Ask the CMs over at Fantasy Faire when and where you might bump into Gaston; they’ve always been helpful with that sort of thing! I find the Fantasy Faire CMs to be the best-informed and most helpful about tracking down characters when you approach them with a good attitude. They’ll even clue you in about when to get in line to meet a particular princess if she’s in the day’s lineup.

I did have one CM over there who was a total dud once (not sure if new or just having a bad day or what), but then a different one in the area was able to help.

You're so right! Looking back, it's always been the FF CMs who have been the best - helping with Merida, directing us (kindly) to where to wait for Flynn, helping me be first in line to meet Aurora (my very first Princess from when I was a little girl), all that jazz. They're definitely awesome.

I love the meet and greets, but not so much the roaming characters. I do agree it adds to the ambiance in the park, especially in FL. However, one of the most frustrating "roaming" characters are the Storm Troopers in Tomorrowland. They will not allow pictures and will call you out if you try to take one. Part of the act? I thought so too at first. But then when I had my brother step up near them (really 5-6 feet away from where they were standing) so I could get a photo of him with them in the background, one of them pointed and said "STOP! No pictures". They said the same thing to a mom who was trying to do the same thing with her kids. Then they chose a woman out of the crowd and walked around with her for around 8ish minutes before going backstage. Kinda a bummer for the little kids who were excited to interact and get pictures with them.

I think that is part of the act though. They're "policing" people and being overly authoritative, and photos are just a convenient thing for them to call you out on so they have something to "enforce". I think if the photos were really against the rules they would have a non-costumed CM with them to stop people politely rather than making it one of the pre-recorded(?) character lines. It's too bad there isn't a proper meet and greet for the storm troopers so people can get proper photos though.

Yeah, that's what we thought the first few times that they were saying it and waving their hands for no pictures. I'm probably not explaining very well how the whole interaction was. I totally get the atmosphere and wanting to be in character, but this felt different. The other family took it the same way.

Who knows! All the other characters were happy to get pictures and interact with everyone who tried, so that's good enough for us. pixiedust:

I haven’t been to Disneyland in years and will not be going for a few more months, but I have friends and family who go regularly. I have never heard anyone have an issue with character meet and greets being chaotic as originally described.

I think at any theme park, even Disney parks, there’s always a chance something isnt going to go your way. Although it’s hard for little ones when they cannot meet their favorite character, certainly adults and teenagers should expect potential disappointment that their character of choice won’t be there, line will be long, etc. There’s plenty to do and tons of positives to focus on than not meeting someone dressed as a character (which although fun, is the reality of what it is unless you’re a young child who still believes .)

Your time at the parks is what you make of it, and I’ve had a few bummer moments at the parks that have been nearly forgetten due to the overwhelming positive a Disneyland vacation provides.

I wasn't there, and I've never interacted with them up close (just as an on-looker) so maybe you're right. If so, it's such a strange rule. They allow you to take photos of all the other characters. I can see how that would be confusing and annoying.

I got curious and just looked more into it. I guess it is a thing that they will not do photos unless you are very insistent with them. Wish we would have known beforehand, then we wouldn't have felt as bad that they weren't allowing pictures! Maybe we'll try again next time.

This goes back to one of my main points in this thread, that I wish Disney would be a little more transparent/informative about the different character interactions! I genuinely feel for tourists who are confused by so much at DL (I spend waaaay too much time explaining Maxpass and other nuances to out-of-towners), but it seems to me like they could spare a lot of frustration by explaining "roaming characters" and the resulting restrictions somewhere!

I agree. We go often, but aren't as up-to-date on characters. Maybe if they had character handlers out with the characters more often, it help them explain what's going on. Probably would make it easier on the characters, too.

Yeah, the storm troopers are other difficult roamers. At one point, about 5 years ago, I asked if I could get a picture of my girls with one of them. He paused and my girls stood by him and smiled while the stormtrooper examined and lifted her ponytail. It was a funny interaction and the only time we managed a photo with a stormtrooper. They were definitely allowed to be photographed then. It must just be part of their act to be jerks...

Ya got me there. In my own defense though, the topic of this thread is a single specific aspect of DL that I find awful. How weird would it be to start such a thread and then lace it with all the things I liked about the park? You want one? Okay, the macaron cart in Downtown Disney is awesome. Asking the macaron vendor how she handles it when every third or fourth customer asks for a macaroon might be one of the top 5 highlights of my trip. Does it make up for having no clue whether or not Pocahontas will be in the park or if the Columbia will sail until the actual day of the trip? No, but maybe the HM pet graveyard does; that's pretty awesome.

I never intended this particular criticism to be a reflection on whether I hated or loved Disneyland. I can't think of a single thing on this Earth that I do love that is without flaw, can you?

Yes, actually I can. The "thing" is named Norman and he's my boyfriend. I'm lucky and I am blessed - he even does his own laundry. ;)

And even if he does screw up the response would be "You are an idiot, but I still love you." You however have made two topics, both overflowing with negatives and negatives only. If you love something and it has a flaw, what good does it do to just endlessly list the flaws? You've done so in both topics, and in your other topic there would definitely have been room for that.

Besides you've only mentioned very weird things like that princess joke Story. I am still trying to grasp why you were annoyed about Merida laughing at your joke and not acting shocked and coy. Other things you mentioned just keep telling of your lack of research.

And you are ignoring most things people say, like the recommendation to just look at the app for character appearances (bringing us back to the lack of research). Of course you will get an idea who is at the park if you look once the day before you leave. Even the week before you leave. It's a smaller park, of course there won't be as many steady meets as in WDW. The character is there anyway although not listed? Be happy you got lucky. The refurbs are listed on the app and on the website, so yeah, (staying with your example) if you had looked you will have an idea if the Columbia is sailing.

You tell us "convince me". All but one post saying they had the same experience you had (once) have said meeting characters is not horrible, and while the posters all are sorry you had a bad experience we have been telling you repeatedly it is not the norm. Yet you still keep telling us how bad things are and we are wrong. It seems you don't actually want to be "convinced."

You meet 5 characters in 2 trips and are trying to make a rule out of your experiences. Sorry, but that is not going to work. Sometimes I meet 5 characters within an hour, and my experience has been totally the opposite.

4 CMs did not take a picture for you. All at the same time, at the same line going from what you wrote. Again this is a little odd cause even in Town Square I usually see only two CMs handling a line. So I really can't say what circumstances you encountered this time. But really, would you not rather have them tell you "no" than you get a messed up picture?

I've had CMs even messing up pictures with my cell phone. Couldn't check these because this was during runDisney. I was on pins and needles til the Photopass pictures showed up because this messed up my likely only chance at a picture with Hawkeye.

Before the digital times I was at a sci fi convention where some LOTR actors were meeting. I did have a DSLR and a smaller point and shoot because I knew the DSLR was scary for some. The volunteer at one of the lines who was assigned to take pictures saw my DSLR and offered: "Oh, I have the same model. Would you like me to use this one?" We even chatted a bit about cameras until it was my turn. So I did give her the DSLR. Big mistake. You see our hairlines and the upper part of my glasses on the picture. That's it.

As for your bit about Moana, it would have helped a lot if you had posted that additional info from the start. Then I would have told you right away what skyegirl1999 explained to you now.

Cultural Divide. Umm... ever encountered a certain kind of tour group in WDW? That will show you trampling and pushing in. I got caught up in one of these groups heading for Pandora. Not pretty.

And like I said in an earlier post, do yourself a favor and don't ever try to get near a character in Paris.

Story time. Last year Pinocchio stole my umbrella in Paris and ran off with it. He started posing with the umbrella and insisted I take pictures. I was hesitating to do so because he actually ran off from an organised line, which doesn't happen very often in Paris to begin with. I didn't want to take anyone's time.

At one of the pictures - besides 4 children pushing autograph books at him - there's two kids on one side and one on his other side where the parents just pushed the kids in. It was clear as day Pinocchio was doing something else. I don't know what good it does to get a picture "with" a character who isn't even looking in the same direction, but they seemed happy with it.

THAT is what I am used to. 1000 times worse than what you are describing. And Paris is the only place where you will have CMs dispersing a line, if there is one to begin with.

Above mentioned boyfriend broke his wrist in one of these scrums, and if I find it again when I am home I will be happy to show you a picture of my arms after we had found the 7 dwarfs out, with the "make a circle around the character" style. All black and blue. My mom saw it and almost accused my boyfriend of beating me.

It is that bad that one of my friends actually refuses to come with us to Paris anymore, and only meets characters the annual trip to Anaheim bcause this is where she feels "safe."

Being told now I am just not seeing the "bad behavior" in Disneyland anymore because it is what I regularly experience is a sick joke.

I've never actually asked this, but if a mod reads this, maybe it's time to close this topic? As a character fan I am happy about each person less in line. ;) But I have been worried people are getting the wrong impression for a while now.

And now things like "cultural divides" are being brought up. This now seems to be another "WDW is better than DLR" post after all.

Coming in, as requested. Been following this thread from the beginning and agree that each guest has a right to a unique perspective on the parks. No one's view is better than anyone else's and no one park is better than any other. Different? Yes. Better? No.
If the OP truly wants to be convinced, as indicated in his post title, he has had plenty of testimony that better experiences with characters do happen. If he is trying to convince others that his experience is the norm, that does not seem to be happening.
It does seem to be time to close this thread since nothing productive has come up recently.
