Somehow, The Marathon Returned - comments welcome!

Training is still light, but I was able to do my 6x800 workout today (speed work for the Donna half marathon Feb 1, assuming I’ll be ok to race). I used the KT tape Santa left in my stocking and it helped my knee feel relatively normal. It still felt sore as time went on but it didn’t make me want to stop, so I’ll take that as a win.

(Yes, I know I should see a PT, but my health insurance is changing at the beginning of the year and I don’t feel like trying to find one until that happens. Yay corporate America.)

I have easy runs during the week next week, and another speedwork session on Sunday (which I reserve the right to skip if my knee gets worse), but I’m hoping taping and stretching will help. All my other running niggles have gone away on their own, so crossing fingers.

Well, the hay is in the barn, so to speak. My easy runs were okay - my knee is definitely still not "fine," but it's more sore than a sharp pain, so I'm still able to run. (I'm planning to research PTs after the marathon, so don't yell at me.) I didn't do speedwork yesterday because I didn't want to aggravate my knee, so I did a Mind of the Marathoner workout instead and was mostly able to hit those paces. (Warmup and cooldown, with 1 mile a minute slower than MP, 1 mile at MP, and 1 mile a minute faster than MP. The fastest mile was only about 30 seconds faster than MP, but I was going uphill.) I'm hoping I can hit at least 13:30 pace during the marathon, but who knows with what the temperature will end up being. I might join a pace group, depending on what corral I'm in, but I probably won't stick with them since I'll want pictures and stuff.

I have a 30 minute run tomorrow that I'm planning to do nice and easy. Then just walking and keeping lose for MW. The 5k will be walked. :)

Hope to see a bunch of you there!

Disney Marathon Weekend

The best weekend of the year has come and gone. 😭 The short story -my main goal was to finish the marathon feeling stronger than the last, and I accomplished that despite much hotter weather. Even better, I was 24 minutes faster than last year even though I stopped for 8 more minutes! I'm very happy and feel like I can take a year off without feeling like I need anything to prove. :P

Wednesday - Expo

Because I was doing the 5k, I had to go to the expo on the first day, which I hate. Thankfully (?) I had to work during the day, so I went to the expo after picking my son up from the bus stop. I got there around 4:30 and met up with @SheHulk and her friend. We had no line for bib pickup, which was a relief after seeing pics of the awful lines earlier in the day. When I got my 5k bib, I was shocked to see that I was in corral A. What??? I'm not fast! I told @The Expert I would drop back to B to run with her, but she insisted I start in A. I might never again get that opportunity, so I took it, LOL. We went over to get our shirts and then split up to do some shopping. It was so nice meeting SheHulk in person! I spent way too much money at the expo as usual, but my mom had told me to buy myself stuff for my birthday, so who was I to say no? :D I also stopped at the Galloway booth and finally met Chris Twiggs, my running coach. We had a nice chat and took a selfie. The runDisney merch had no virtual queue at that point, so I went over there and got the marathon weekend shoes, which I've been wearing ever since. :) I also picked up the marathon weekend spirit jersey. I don't NEED another one, since I live in Florida and all, but I love them and I loved the design of this one. Then I headed home and thankfully didn't hit much traffic, because I needed to go to bed! It was a battle trying to get my son to go to bed, and at one point I told him "you can stay up but I need to go to bed." :D Finally we were all settled. I fell asleep later than I wanted but it was okay because I could take a nap after the race!

Thursday - 5k

The next morning I woke up around 2:30, cursing all my life choices as usual. I had organized all my costume pieces the night before and also styled my wig. I was going as Mara Jade from Star Wars. No issues getting to Epcot (yay team car!) and wandered over to the light pole. I had more time than usual since I didn't need to worry about getting to the front of my corral! I got into A right around the time it closed and hovered at the back. Thankfully I saw some kids in there so I didn't feel THAT out of place (but runDisney should really use POT for both the 5k and 10k!). The race started and I ran to keep up with the crowd, but settled into a run/walk groove. I didn't even bring my GymBoss timer so I just ran on feel, mostly to test out my knee. It was bothering me a little, but not too bad. In the beginning I caught up with Chris and said hello before passing him - the ONLY time that will ever happen. :D I stopped for Moon Girl because her line wasn't long and she's a rare character. The CM playing her was so cute and energetic! I loved running through Epcot with all the space themed music playing, and especially all the Star Wars music. I was halfway around World Showcase when Duel of the Fates started playing, and that might be the coolest experience I've ever had at Disney. I couldn't help but run with that song playing! I didn't stop for any other characters because their lines were so long, even from A! Disney REALLY needs to add more characters or figure out something to make the lines shorter if they're going to explain the 5k entries. Thankfully the lines went quickly, but I waited longer during the 5k for some than during the marathon. Chris caught up with me near The Land and we walked together for a bit until I stopped for a picture with Pleakley. In line I took videos of me vibing to the Star Wars disco themes. Again, it was SO COOL and I was so glad I went back on my "no more Disney 5ks" rule for this race. I also stopped for a photo with Spaceship Earth. @The Expert caught up with me in line so we got a pic together as well as by ourselves. We ran together for the rest of the race, and it was so fun finishing with a friend! I grabbed all my goodies and promptly went home, took a shower, and rested until my first meeting at 11:30. Funny note: I got home right as my husband and son were leaving for the bus stop, and my son was so weirded out by my wig. He refused to hug me until I took it off! :D

Friday - Meetups

I wasn't running on Friday, but I headed over to the expo around noon for the Customized Training Group meetup. It was short, but it was nice to see so many folks in person instead of over Zoom. I chatted with some folks before going back into the vendor area to see Jeff Galloway. The line wasn't too long and I thanked him, again, for making me a runner and asked how he was recovering after his fall last month. He was in great spirits and eager to get back onto his feet. Afterwards, I chatted with one of the pacers and then wandered around to do some more unnecessary shopping. Picked up a pair of space-themed Feetures for The Expert and also got myself some Fuzzy Fizzies recovery bath salts. (I used them on Monday night and they were REALLY nice.) Also got some of the glitter freckle tattoos to try, because regular glitter comes off me almost immediately. (Spoiler: the face tattoo mostly stayed on despite me constantly dumping water on myself and sweating like a pig!) I also went to the merch area to look around some more and ended up buying the men's marathon weekend tee and the runDisney medal holder. I'm still REALLY annoyed that all of the women's marathon shirts were gone by Wednesday night. So many people who are only running the marathon don't even go to the expo until Friday or Saturday. ORDER MORE MERCH, RUN DISNEY!

After that, I parked at DHS and walked over to Hurricane Hanna's. The meetup was huge! It was so nice talking to everyone again and helped with the pre-race jitters. Oddly, I didn't start feeling nervous until Saturday night. I shared a skyliner back with @Herding_Cats and crew, and her daughter must have sensed that I have a kid her age, because she decided I was her new best friend. :) Thankfully it did not take too much time to get home, and we met my husband's family for dinner at a restaurant by our house. I stuffed my face with hibachi and we sent my son with them for the weekend. I missed him, but it was so nice being able to go to bed whenever I needed to and rest on the couch as much as I wanted!

Saturday - Spectating the Half Marathon

Saturday I woke up only slightly later than before the 5k so I could get to Epcot in time before they started closing the roads. Spoiler: they closed the road early! But thankfully, I was able to get around the detour without being stuck in traffic. I took the monorail to the TTC and was one of the first people there. It was nice being able to sit on a bench and have some breakfast before all the crowds arrived. I found a spot and got ready for the first athletes to come through. It was so much fun spectating! I had a blast and honestly, one of the reasons I don't want to do the marathon next year is because I want to spectate. @AZMermaid caught up with me for a few minutes. I saw a bunch of folks come through - @The Expert, @Herding_Cats, @sandam1, @marty3d, @camaker, @GuinnessRunner, @Mr_Incr3dible, and so many others I forgot. (Sorry!!!) I stayed until the balloon ladies came through and then monorailed back to Epcot. I tried to find a spot at the bus loop but it was way too crowded. I did see Herding Cats come through there, though!

After that I headed home and stayed on the couch working on my carb-loading for most of the day. I tried really hard not to take a nap, but ended up dozing off for 15 minutes or so. I got all my stuff organized and ready to go for the next day and tried not to be too anxious. I got in bed a little after 6 pm, but didn't fall asleep until around 8 pm. Still, I got a decent amount of sleep before my alarm went off at 2 am.

Next up - the marathon.

Sunday - The Marathon

The big day finally arrived. I programmed two alarms on my phone, two on my watch, and also the bedroom lights to turn on with my first alarm. Once again, I had set everything out the night before, including my husband's bag for our AK fuel swap. I'd also pinned my hair, did my face glitter, and applied KT tape the previous night, so all I had to do was brush my teeth and get dressed. I was out the door at 2:35 and got to Epcot in about 25 minutes. (My post-security Spaceship Earth picture is timestamped 3:08.) Got to the light pole and chatted for a bit, trying to calm my nerves. The cheerios helped. Then it was off for one last potty stop before settling into E corral. My initial goal was to start with the 5:45 pace group, and they were all the way at the front of the corral - NOT where I usually like to be. I tried to inch my way up there and eventually got close to them when we made our way to the start chute. I let out a little cheer when they announced the Dapper Dans were singing the national anthem, and it gave me all the feels. I tried to calm myself as we made our way to the start line and chatted with some of the other people joining the pace group. I wasn't sure if I could keep up with them for long, but I was going to try.

Garmin and my photo timestamps say I started at 5:01, so right in the middle of the field. The first few miles went by in a blur. I focused on keeping up with the pace group and settled into 30/30 intervals. It felt really crowded along the first road and all throughout Epcot. I don't know if that was true for everyone or just a result of running with the pace group. I ran ahead and went to the bathroom across from The Land, and was able to catch back up with the group while we were leaving Epcot. I had been checking our pace and we were slower than what we were supposed to be, so I figured they'd be making up time once we were on World Drive, and I was right. When they started speeding up (high 12 min miles), I knew I couldn't keep up with that level of heat and humidity, so I let the group go. Once I did, I actually started enjoying myself more. This is not to criticize the pace group, but I realized that I need some space when I run and I like the freedom of being able to stop when I need to. I refilled my water at the horrible GF water stop and poured in my second bag of Tailwind. I realized I hadn't taken my applesauce yet, and probably should have then, but kept forgetting.

Then we were into MK! Running down Main Street gave me all the feels, as usual. I stopped for a few selfies, and then got into the Jack and Barbossa line because it was shockingly not long at all. I only waited a few minutes. I also stopped for the Maleficent dragon float, castle pic, Mirabel and Bruno, and Stich's friends. I'd been texting with @pluto377 and @Herding_Cats and thought they would catch up to me in MK, but none of the lines ended up being long enough! I also stopped in the Storybook Circus bathrooms since I knew it would be awhile until we had another set of real bathrooms.

Outside of MK I experience the same thing I did at the last few races on this course - a mini panic attack that made me feel like I had to go to the bathroom. I took some calming breaths and walked a bit more, and tried to focus on counting steps to get out of my head. I stopped at a med tent and got some immodium, and I'm guessing that eventually worked because the stomach twinges went away. Will definitely be using that at my next race! I saw @The Expert at the TTC and she gave me my fuel and a mini coke - bless her! The meandering TTC parking lot was BORING but I tried to get into a groove with my intervals. Finally we hit the half marathon mark and I assessed how I was feeling, and realized I was feeling much better than I had at the last marathon. Which was good because the worst was yet to come! I stopped for Doc McStuffins because she only had like 1 person in her line. I almost ran by Chip and Dale, then saw they were in baseball uniforms, so I doubled back for their line.

Then, it was time for Star Wars! I was actually underwhelmed with this part this year. Last year, it felt like the music went on longer, but this year there was a lot of dead space and it felt like such a slog. I waited for Vader, which was the longest character line by far even though it didn't have as many people in it. Perhaps Vader is just hard to photograph. I have pictures with him in the park, but because I was dressed as Grand Admiral Thrawn, I knew I needed a pic with him. I also stopped for Kylo Ren, because you can't actually meet him in the park.

I crossed Western Way and let my husband know I was getting closer to AK. I always underestimate how long it takes to get to the park along that back road. It's SO long. I stopped for the animals and got my picture with the skink. There were a lot more out than last year, but I wanted to keep moving. Around this time, @AZMermaid called out to me, and we ran for a few minutes together. Always nice to see friendly faces on the course! My husband and friend had gotten a spot near Thirsty River right past the photopass photographers, so it was really easy to spot them. Got hugs, then did my fuel swap. (Yay for organization!) My husband got me my fountain coke as requested, and I took some migraine pills because my knee was starting to twinge. My KT tape was already falling off (despite having used spray adhesive - it was SO sweaty), but I just left it on. I chatted with them for a bit and then headed off into the abyss. :P I stopped at the Nemo bathrooms and used the men's room because it was blocked off from day guests and I didn't want to wait in any more lines. :P As we headed out of AK, there were people coming in, which made me relieved because last year there was no one and it was kind of disheartening. We passed the balloon ladies and that was the only time I saw them all day!

Once we got on Western Way I told myself that this was the worst part of the race by far, and once I got to the end, I was golden. I cued up "Happily Ever After" and made myself emotional. I stuck to my intervals, telling myself that it would get me to the end of the road faster. When we hit mile 20, I said, only 10k left! Then we got to the end of the road and I took a picture of me flipping off the Western Way road sign.

At some point I switched intervals to 15/30, and then 20/30, because my knee was bothering me, but I can't remember when. Also, it was HOT. I dumped water on myself at every single water stop and kept the sponge in my bra. But I kept going, and overall I felt better than the previous year. In Blizzard Beach, @pluto377 caught up with me so we ran for a bit together. She broke off to see Pluto, while I ran off with the 6:30 pace group that had caught up to me. I knew the pacer from instagram and said hey, I'm going to join you, and thank god I did. They kept me going for the next several miles. As we were passing the Western Way intersection, the course had been diverted so all those runners crowded it. It got really hard to maneuver so I just kept my eye on the flag. One foot in front of the other, and then we were through Hollywood Studios, on the Boardwalk, and into Epcot. My husband couldn't find a good place to stop, so he went to the finish line with the rest of his family. I got a much-needed hug and tissue from The Expert in Epcot, and then powered on to the end. I said thank you to the pacers before stopping for Jiminy Cricket, then we were on to the finish line! I spotted my family and cried at the finish line, as per usual. I trodded through the finish chute, got all my stuff, and waited for a paddle pic. I still dislike the new process, but I didn't have to wait long. Met up with my family, got some pictures, and then trodded off to the car. Thankfully I hadn't parked far.

My overall goal for this marathon was to finish feeling stronger than last marathon, and I did! I also PRed by 24 minutes, despite having stopped for 8 more minutes than last year. Considering the weather was way worse, I'm very happy with the results.

Next: evening recovery, DATW, and final thoughts.

Rest of Sunday

After the marathon, we came home, I tried to refuel with liquid IV and carbs, took a shower, then a bath, and spent several hours on the couch. Eventually I got up to let the dog out and was FURIOUS that it was cold now?? How freaking RUDE. We had a dinner reservation for Chef Mickey's at 5:10 so we headed off to the contemporary a little after 4:15. We met my in-laws and son there and he was so excited to see me again - but also to play Pokemon Go on my phone again. :P I stuffed my face with steak and mashed potatoes and got pics with the characters. Mickey and Minnie especially complimented me on my race. :) There were some other marathoners there and it was funny to see all our plates stacked high with food. :D

Monday

Monday I took off for Drink Around the World! What better way to celebrate my birthday, right? I spotted @Novatrix as I was heading toward Les Halles for my annual post-marathon baguette, so she walked with me and got a comically huge croissant for herself. Then she joined me for my traditional "pain is just a french word for bread" photo with my baguette. :D DATW was a blast as usual, and I had so much fun chatting with everyone, including @Herding_Cats' daughter who forced me to play some game on her dad's phone. G kept telling me "you can tell her no!" but she was very cute. Eventually other kids joined the group so she lost interest in me. :D

My quads were KILLING me this day. My knee hurt a lot after I got out of my car to walk to the park, but eventually felt better the more I moved (and after taking ibuprofen). My quads were just burning like crazy, though. My calves felt fine, weirdly! So I guess I need to do more squats and dead lifts. :P I've taken Epsom salt baths the last two days and feeling almost normal again.

I got some medal pics with Spaceship Earth on my way out of the park, and it took me WAY too long to get home. Stupid traffic.

Tuesday was back to work. Womp womp.

Final thoughts

I am NOT doing the marathon next year. I will however do the half. I live so close that it feels weird not to do a race at marathon weekend. As I was running toward Animal Kingdom, I thought to myself, I don't actually like the marathon distance. I love halfs, and even up to 15 or 17 or 20, but after that, I'm done. I'm sure I'll be back to do another marathon because I do really love runDisney, and the marathon course is the most management in terms of character lines and crowding, but it'll be at least 2028 before I return. And I hope I can eventually get a marathon proof of time.

All in all, it was a great weekend and I can't wait for Princess.

My legs were the same- knee hurt but was fine once warmed up, feet and calves fine, but OMG my quads. I had to talk
Myself into sitting and standing every time on Monday. and something about the angle needed to sit on the toilet…. Death.

HUGE thanks to you for tolerating DD. She's.......a lot. All the time. And everyone is her friend, they just don't know it yet.
Like I said to you… we have the same child. I’m very used to it. :D

They are ALMOST feeling better. I’m going to attempt a run tomorrow. It may turn into a walk. :P
