Some Thoughts On Kidani Village

We just got back from a week at WDW where we spent 5 nights at AKV Jambo and 1 night at AKV Kidani Village. We had tried to get the entire time at Kidani and were on the waitlist for 7 months but the waitlist never came through. I just thought I'd post some random thoughts about our stay, so as to help others make a decision as to which section to stay at.

1) We had great room locations for both sections. At Jambo we were on 5th floor facing the Arushu Savannah down the left hand trail from the lobby. We were in the second "pod" of rooms right next to the elevator lobby. This made for easy access. At Kidani we were on the 2nd floor (lobby level) to the right of the lobby in the second pod also. Very easy walk to lobby and very easy walk to elevator down to parking level.

2) Our rooms were Studios (Savannah) both times. We preferred the layout of the Kidani room over Jambo. They are very similar except at Kidani you can close the door to the bathroom and it closes the entire bathroom not just the toilet and tub. This is great for us as I get up early but DW likes to sleep later. I can get up and take my shower, etc. and close the door and not disturb DW. While at Jambo, when you turn the light on above the sink area, it shines into the rest of the room. Plus you have the added noise. I always enjoy getting up first and going down to the lobby to drink my coffee and catch up on the world on my iPhone.

3) Speaking of morning coffee. This is one area where Jambo is better. I like to get up and go to Mara and get my coffee and then sit in the lobby. But at Kidani the coffee refill station is in the gift show and it doesn't open until 7:30. This would be a definite problem for me if we were staying the entire week at Kidani.

4) We did notice one other difference in the rooms. I really missed the neat wallpaper that Jambo rooms have that Kidani room's don't have. In fact, I found the decor of the Kidani rooms kind of bland. I always like that neat map they have on the walls in Jambo also.

5) We did the walk from Kidani and Jambo and back one evening to eat at Mara. It is a very easy walk. One hint though. Walk the inner sidewalk that is right next to the parking level instead of the outer walkway that cuts through the external parking area. It is just a little shorter. All told, I'd estimate it is 5 minutes lobby to lobby. Plus you always have the bus option.

6) We had one meal at Sanaa (lunch) and thought it was very good. I especially liked the tomato soup. Both DW and myself missed having a CS restaurant on site though. We always stay in Studios and don't do any cooking in our units, so this really effected us. Also as mentioned, if you're an early riser like me, you don't have access to the drink refills until 7:30.

7) The BIG plus to us though at Kidani was how close we felt to the animals (especially being on the 2nd floor). They seemed so much closer than at Jambo. One time we saw four giraffes all together. That was really cool.

8) Another plus for Kidani is the busses. Since the park busses stop at Kidani first, it is less crowded when you get one. Quite often when a bus gets to Jambo it is already full with people from Kidani.

9) We found Kidani much quieter than Jambo. Especially the lobby. In fact the entire resort seemed very quiet but supposedly it was fully booked. If you're the type that likes a lot of hustle and bustle this might be a factor to consider.

10) To summarize - I still don't know which section is my first choice. There are pluses and minus' for both. If they ever put in a CS option at Kidani, we'd probably choose Kidani all the time. But short of that, I'd probably just book whichever is available.

I hope this information helps some folks thinking about booking in the future.

Thanks for your post. :thumbsup2 We'll be going to AKV - Kidani in Feb for our first DVC trip. I'm anxious to get there to see what it's like. We did not tour before we bought. We're staying at a Studio this time (SV).

Thanks Wolf Pack fan!

We will be at Jambo house in 2 weeks.

We chose Jambo because we are travelling with friends who are staying at AKL. I hope we get a great view of the animals!

Mara sounds great too.

Thanks for your insights! We are currently booked at Jambo House for our May trip and I've been contemplating trying to change. The big issue for me is the counter service. Thanks again. I appreciate your post. :)

Thanks for posting your experiences at Jambo and Kidani. It's helpful to us as we're in the process of planning a trip for late August & considering AKV. Our eldest DD19 may invite a friend or two along too so we are trying to determine whether Jambo or Kidani is better location for these three & DS21 & DD13. From your info I'm thinking Jambo may be better choice because of convenience to Mara particularly for afternoons when they like to spend time at pool, I don't think they're going to want to trek from Kidani's pool to Mara.

:)

Oh yay and thanks. Another thread getting me excited about our upcoming stay at Kidani in just 3 weeks. Thanks for the current insights. :)

With all these folks, I think the extra bathrooms in Kidani far outweigh the CS. The pool at Kidani is very nice, and if they wish they can hang out at the Uzima pool for Mara visits.

Thanks for your review! I just happened to be searching for the what time the gift shop opened at Kidani! I love my early morning coffee too!

Thanks for your post! I agree that Kidani is really nice but not having counter service is a minus. We stayed in a 1 bedroom savanna view room at Kidani in October and we have a 1 bedroom savanna view room at Jambo booked for January. We want to figure out which building we like better.

Many of the differences you point out are due to the fact that Jambo was 1st and foremost a hotel/inn. When they converted some of the rooms to studios/villas they worked with what they had, hence the odd bathroom/sink/shower configuration. Just as in BWV, the decor is more striking and more often updated in the inn/hotel part then in the DVC villas, the same can be said of Kidani.

Thanks for your input and insight. Many have mentioned their displeasure at the lack of CS at Kidani, personally I'm usually in a 2br and don't use Mara so I look forward to a stay in Kidani in the near future. Nothng like having your morning coffee looking out onto the savana! I love DVC!

OP back again. DW and myself were just out doing some errands (we're expecting a snow event tomorrow, so had to stock up on the usual 4 loaves of bread and 3 gallons of milk :)) - anyway I asked her which she preferred and she said Kidani. After discussion the two major things that stand out are how close you are to the animals IF you can get a lower floor unit and also the nice parking right under the building. I didn't mention this in my original post but it was very nice being able to take the elevator down to the parking level and being right there near your car. No trooping through the lobby and across the parking lot to find your car. This is especially nice if it's raining of course. As far as my concern about the 7:30 opening of the gift shop and not being able to get my early coffee fix; we could always make coffee in our room if I plan on getting up early. Just fix it the night before and turn it on while I'm taking my shower. No big deal. Also, regarding the CS. Yes we missed it BUT during the entire week we only ate at Mara once. And the walk was not bad at all.

Regarding the lack of CS - from looking at Kidani it seems to me that if they put in a CS they would have to take out Sanaa. I just don't see where the extra room would come from. We liked Sanaa (which surprised me because I went in thinking I would not like it). So I don't know which way I'd like it to go.

Jambo house has double sinks in the studio. We haven't stayed in a Kidani studio, but want to know if it has double sinks in the vanity area as well.

Thank you for posting your AKV thoughts!!! We had one night, last Friday in a value studio...we lucked out again, it had a savannah view!

Awesome summary!

We're about to book next month and are trying to figure out which is best for us; you've given me more to consider, thanks! :thumbsup2

This may be OT, but you guys may see a lot of snow. I live SW of you in Alabama, and I am sick of rain!

We just came back from a week at Kidani, and loved it. I've never been to Jambo, so can't really compare the 2. The lack of CS didn't bother us - if we were back at the resort, we had lunch on our room on the balcony. I really liked the room layout for a dedicated 2BR - the extra hall space was great storage for strollers, our cooler, etc. I'd heard the bus rides were really long, and it was true, but not so much as to make us hate the place.

Thanks, WolfpackFan, for taking the time to share your insights on Kidani and Jambo!

Don't forget the toilet paper. :) We're supposed to get hit with the snow tomorrow night.

Thanks for the review. My stay is coming up in October and I was wondering about the walk from Kidani to Jambo. I've read a lot of conflicting stories on that. Some people must be taking that longer path you mentioned.

I haven't stayed in a Kidani studio but based on the floorplan the vanity has one sink:

Thank you for the post. We just joined DVC this week @ AKV and I am eager for any information that distinguishes between Jambo and Kidani. Perfect! :thumbsup2

Is there a way to "bookmark" this post?

Thanks again!!!

THANKS for the review. :) I wasn't sure which to go with when maing my first DVC ressie yesterday but chose Kidani village as we've stayed on the 5th floor at Jambo before (pre DVC renovation). You said you liked the 2nd floor. Are there 3 floors? I didn't put in any request for floor at this point but maybe I should if I can while it's early.
