Some stinkin' lesson I learned :(

Some of you saw the post in facebook and wanted details...Alan did not close the grey tank lines when we left the fort. So... I came home saw it was full and WITHOUT a sewer hose or "dump" I opened it in flip flops. Problem is Keystone mislabeled the grey and black. Guess what was behind door #2 when I pulled it? I showered in bleach and called the closest CG to us and paid $25 to dump correctly and learn a hard lesson. This morning I went to Camping World and bought a clear sewer elbow.

What I didn't get was why you dumped it. Were you just dumping the gray water on the ground? Do you have a sewer cleanout in the driveway?

I thought it was grey water from what I thought was our upstairs sink (would be clear) what I did not know was that the whole time we were camping (and dumping )the labels from Keystone were wrong. So, when I was dumping grey I was dumping black and vice versa. So, I don't have sewer at my house so guess who got to clean it up? By the time I was done there was almost no trace of it left, but what an experience! NEVER assume. I now have to make labels for the 3 tanks with the correct line up, not a big deal just annoying.

i take the popcorn back.. it probably wouldn't smell the greatest to be able to eat while watching you...

You know at least in the move "RV" they used the hose and it blew up..

OMG - I'm sure I'm not the only one who was picturing Robin Williams from RV while reading your post.

Interesting that you mentioned that Keystone had mislabled the tanks. I've read that on RV net when I googled to research the travel trailer we are thinking of, and several people have had the same problem. I wonder if someone at the factory is playing a joke on unsuspecting new owners? If (most likely WHEN) we get the Keystone, I am having that checked before we drive away and hopefully before the black tank has ever been used.

Several people have mentioned that movie with Robin Williams. I will have to rent it! I will decorate a whole theme of sewers around the movie. Every Sat night is family movie night in the camper. (hey, we paid for it we may as well use it) I have a tabletop christmas tree that is white and I decorate it with the holidays or whatever. I am seeing mini sewer hoses, toliet paper for garland....

Disney4Dan- with our Keystone, they also never opened up the valve to the hot water heater so we blew out the element not knowing water could not get to it. DH opened up the service panel and saw that and corrected it. Of course we now have to take it in and have it repaired. For most dealerships, this would have been caught in the PDI.

I've had 3 Keystone trailers. The Tailgator was fine. One black tank, one gray tank. Very simple. I had a Hobbi toy hauler for a short while and the sewer hookup and handles were in the most messed up place. You practically had to crawl under the back left tire to hook up and the handles were way under there too. Wasn't too bad if you were on clean ground but if you were at a dump station it wasn't a very nice situation.

Fast fwd to my Cougar and that's been another situation. During my walk thru they explained how they had filled the tanks with water and already drained them. Filled em to check for leaks and make sure all was ok. He showed me the valves but never touched them. Well the 1st trip out we stayed at a place with a dump station. I pull up and get ready to attach my hose and pull the cap off and walla. The black and gray tanks were both open. I had assumed (dumb thing to do) the valves were shut. Well they weren't and sewage was going all over. I closed the valves and hooked the hose up and proceeded on. Lesson learned.

The next problem was when I pulled the cap off each time there was still black water coming out, just a smaller amount. I had no idea there was a galley tank (never shown that valve) and when I dumped the gray and black tanks the water would rush up into the galley tank and then when I was driving it would come back out and collect in the sewer pipe. I called the dealer and they told me the valve was under the slide. The handle was missing and of course the valve was open. I pretty much had to self diagnose the galley problem and figured out why, after closing the valves for the black and gray tanks there would still be 2 or 3 gallons in the pipe. I have since drilled a small hole in my cap so I don't get any more surprises.

You said it best self diagnose- I will check about the galley is it a 2nd grey tank? Or something different?

Look on your panel for water levels and battery power. If it says galley you have one. The dealer put a handle on it when I took it in for another problem. If that valve is not closed when you dump the other tanks it will go in there as it is the aft tank. I always dump my galley after I drain the gray tank now. I always check to make sure all the valves are pushed in before I set up and before dumping.

I am paranoid about the valves and check them fairly often, even in storage. My brother's TT was vandalized this past Spring, someone got into the storage yard and broke into several campers. He fixed the broken door lock and gave thanks that they didn't get inside the TT, but one thing he didn't think to check was the valves.

The first time he went camping this Spring he got to the dump station and discovered that the valves were open. According to the lot owner, several people reported this later. When the thieves came through the storage lot they opened the valves on all the campers. A lot of people got splashed over that one. I check them every time I see the TT, even when it's in storage and the tanks are empty.
