Some questions about transferring to a sweatshirt

Hi. I'm considering making sweatshirts for my two girls for our first trip. I'm going to need someone to design one for me but before I waste someone's time I want to make sure I will do it.

1.) Do I need to do it on a white sweatshirt?
2.) What is a dark transfer? I keep hearing about these
3.) What transfers are the best?
4.) Will my regular ink jet printer print the image?
5.) So I feel really dumb asking this but how do they not come out backwards?

Thanks,
Debbie

There is a post about "20 Tips to Transferring" or something similar- I will bump it up for you- (I don't know how to attach the link to the tthread)
I will tell you...
~You can use any color shirt you would like your Disign on- best to match to a coordinating color to Disign colors though

~Dark Transfers can be done on either color shirt - Keep in mind, *W/ most dark transfers you do not have to "mirror image" your Disign before printing, but follow directions of transfer per company who manufactured the paper you use-
*anything white on the Disign will appear white after the transfer unless you trim the excess white out-

~Best?? That is a personal preference But the transfers sold at Craft stores are generally NOT the best- You can choose to purchase at Office Store, WalMart-etc, or browse internet for bulk buying OR talk w/ Amy-M_I_C_K_E_Y

~Make sure you buy transfer paper that says it is for Inkjet printers (that is most nowadays)

~No prob, we all have questions up front and throughout the process :goodvibes Again to prevent Disigns from printing Backwards (usually only a concern w/ light transfer paper) mirror image your Disign before printing- BUT ALWAYS read the directions of your transfer paper to be sure that is a must w/ that brand...

Again look to the "Bumped" post- I will grab it in a sec...

1) any color will work if you use a DARK transfer; however, if you decide to use a LIGHT transfer, you will pick up the color of the shirt in your transfer if you DONT use a DARK.

2) on dark transfers, any area that is white will show up white on your sweatshirt whereas on light transfers, any area that is white will show up clear (or the color of your sweatshirt).

3) My personal preference is HP dark transfers (usually running a sale @ buy 2 get 1 free from hp.com); however, others prefer Avery or even Amy's dark transfers. I've not heard stellar reports from the transfers sold in craft stores or off ebay. Also, transfers don't keep forever so it's possible to get "old" transfers; make sure you know what you're buying!

4) yes you want an ink jet printer as transfers don't work on laser printers! Make sure you follow the package directions regarding what setting your printer and printer defaults should be turned to (i.e., "best" quality vs. "normal").

5) for dark transfers (HP at least) you don't flip the image because you peel off the transfer paper backing and then lay the image (transfer paper) on the shirt RIGHT SIDE UP whereas for light transfers (HP and Avery at least) you HAVE TO flip the image first before printing your transfer because you lay in the image on the shirt FACE DOWN and then peel off the transfer backing. Always follow the package directions exactly.

hope this helps. Surf on over to my "20 steps" thread for more info. Click HERE FOR THE LINK.
