Some people...

I don’t know what happened to common sense. However, even if you didn’t see the original announcement yesterday regarding the airport closure this afternoon, and you have a legitimate question, you would think contacting your airline before anyone else should be your first thought. Duh!

Obituary for Common Sense:

An Obituary printed in the London Times

Posted by Ian Armstrong

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
  • Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
  • Why the early bird gets the worm;
  • Life isn't always fair; and
  • Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
  • I Know My Rights
  • I Want It Now
  • Someone Else Is To Blame
  • I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

I know that a lot of people like to think of themselves as geniuses but frankly I don't see what they find so unreasonable about the questions. I know it's because of the storm, but not everyone are veteran travelers and it even took me awhile to know why it was closing down. The idea of cancelled, diverted or delayed flights are not something that everyone thinks about and the edge of the envelope has schedule is not an unreasonable question. If you don't know the answer a simple I don't know would work or check with the airline politely stated would be the civil and right thing to have done. Simply put, if an airport is shutting down it will inform the entire network and the originating flight will likely just be cancelled if it is scheduled to arrive after the closing time. So no one will get stranded in the air until the fuel runs out of the storm passes, whichever come first.

It also committed suicide when people use misleading or mis-information to make a post about the death of common sense. When the story about the woman spilling coffee was explained and easily found on line as to why there was a large award. Or that you cannot defend yourself without automatically setting yourself up for being sued. Almost all those examples have what Paul Harvey used to call "The rest of the story". So even a tongue in cheek post like the ones above are as much a killer of common sense as the aforementioned examples.

So if a store announces it's closing at 6PM, does it make sense to ask "Well, I'm leaving my house at 5 and I'll get there after 6, can I still get in and make my purchases"?

The airport said "We will close tomorrow at 4p" (announcement was yesterday). I don't think it takes a "genius" to realize "airport is CLOSING, airplanes aren't arriving or departing". You don't really need to know WHY it's closing.

In this day and age, everyone SHOULD think about cancelled, diverted, or delayed flights. Doesn't matter where you're going or when. The fact there is an expected HURRICANE to hit the affected area should be a clue that things might not be as you expect. Do people really not travel somewhere without looking at the forecast?

I will readily admit I don't know everything and have asked stupid questions. Fortunately I generally don't ask the questions when the entire world can see my lack of common sense.

I always felt it was unfortunate that McDonalds was the poster child for bad eating habits in this country. Lose that big dollop of special sauce (aka Fat) and they are fine. Those coffee shakes have way more calories and fat grams than a Big Mac does.
I mean yeah, you take off the bun, the sauce, the cheese, and the patties and you have yourself quite the nutritious Big Mac.

I'd say the author of that article's common sense and reason died due to a disease called mock outrage syndrome and his truth and discretion were murdered by a known serial killer named click bait.

Oh don't get me started!! :rotfl: The amount of common sense questions I have been asked when flying is off the charts, but I was always kind. I think my favorite was how to I roll down the window. :rotfl2:It took about every ounce of me to answer without laughing.

But you know after Nicole leaves and the airport reopens people will blame the airlines for their delay. Granted, airlines are no where near perfect - esp in the last year, good grief - but you can't blame them for mother nature.

As always, be kind to your crew! ::yes::

The point is, not everyone knows how air travel works. They imagine that a plane takes off from LA at a specific time and is scheduled to arrive a 4:10pm in Orlando. They picture a plane having no place to go too. It isn't that hard to understand someone not familiar with air travel might not know how that would be handled. So it isn't out of line for them to ask. Perhaps the ones that ask if their flight out of Orlando at 5pm will still go, that of course would be a stupid question no matter their experience. All I was saying is cut a little slack for some of the questions, not for all. Just because for you, "this day and age" has been with some degree of experience, but that doesn't hold true for a very large group of people. Common sense and air travel are not necessarily traveling companions.
