Solve a debate in my home...

I would not have tipped that guy.

I waitressed in college and I normally tip as well as I can afford. I was barely adequate as a server.

I have been known to leave notes for servers entitled "TIPS for [servier's name]" with suggestions for how that server could improve his or her service. Once I wrote a numbered list for someone who berated my son for ordering a milkshake. He had gotten braces tightened that day, was in pain, and we had promised him a milkshake. The server didn't want to make it. The service was poor in other respects but mostly I remember her upsetting my son. I explained to her that embarrassing a teen dining with his parents just is not done, that we were regulars in that establishment, and that she would not be serving us again. I may have left 50 cents on top of the paper I wrote on.

Actually I never saw her again so I don't think she lasted long there.

I would have left a penny on the charge slip so that it was obvious I was deliberately not tipping and I would put a complaint into corporate. I agree that the manager did not go far enough to compensate the OP for the inconvenience. The manager deserves to feel the sting of corporate calling and finding out what the heck is going on in that location.

I too would not have left a tip. But I would have inquired of the manager if other restaurant service personnel would not get their portion because of it- if so I would have left a few dollars to be given to the runners/busstaff and made sure the manager knew why.

My dd's always watch to see what I tip-probably because dh & I disagree. I start at 20% then go down or up accordingly. He tries to get away with 15%- for me that is only at a buffet or at the pizzaria where all they do is bring the pizza and clear the table. (drinks etc are self serve)

The only time I didn't tip was about 3 yrs ago at Steak and Shake. The server was rude, refused to refill my daughter's drink. And scrapped nuts off her sundae when we sent it back(we told him no nuts) rather than have a new one made. She isn't allergic- but it still annoyed me -I saw him scrape it into the soft drink station sink. He didn't even bother getting fresh whipped cream- just brought it back and I wasn't comfortable with his cleanliness to have her eat it after seeing that he took a spoon from who knows where at that sink- the silverware stand was clearly elsewhere. When I paid the bill, my family scurried out to the car because they were so uncomfortable with me not leaving a tip. I asked to speak with the manager and I explained why I wasn't leaving the tip-made sure they didn't split with bus-staff and he gave me a gift card for my next visit as well as a fresh sundae to go(no nuts). That was customer service. Now my kids try to guess what percent I will give depending on service- its almost a game. Passed the table without bringing napkins- 18%....brought refill without being asked 21% lol!

I would highly suggest you look at your credit card statement as well if that was the payment method. My brother had an occasion at Applebee's that was just as bad as this server and the girl wrote in her own tip! They investigated it and sure enough she wrote in her own tip. She was fired and my bother was given a very large gift card.

I agree with this. If the server was already being underhanded, I wouldn't put it past him to write in his own tip.

And I wouldn't of tipped either.

I agree too...not tip- not deserved. All he did was cause you angry for what was suppose to be a fun,pleasant, celebration dinner.

And, the manager didn't do enough or anything in my opinion, you weren't looking for a free meal, but for everything that happened, it should have been!

If there is a corp. write or call them to let them know!

I hate that many people tip just for the sake of tipping. It is the reason why tip jars are showing up in places like Dunkin Donuts and other places where before, nobody would even consider tipping.

OP, I'm with you. I wouldn't have left anything at all for that waiter.

I will not wreck your hot streak OP.....I totally agree and would not have tipped. I have heard a lot of outrageous things around here and this is one of the tops!!!

One of the reasons the manager was not more helpful--it may have been his idea to increase sales with the wait staff. This is another reason I would write the corporate office, if possible. If there is any possibility that this was his idea, it needs to be nipped in the bud immediately.

I haven't read the rest of this thread but immediately I think no! No tip. A tip is when you do a good job. You don't automatically deserve a tip and if the service was bad then absolutely they don't deserve a tip.

You're right! Obviously the OPs fiance lost this debate! If the whole budget board agrees you've got to be right!

I've run the gamut of pretty much every restaurant job that you can do, from hostess, all the way up to manager. And I was a server for a very long time. It takes a lot for me NOT to tip and not to tip well.

What this server did was not only against policy of ANY restaurant that I've ever seen, it was completely immoral. And as a PP mentioned...what if you were allergic???

I hope that you noted the server's name, because I would most certainly be contacting the corporate office as soon as possible and I would like contact the GM of this establishment and let them know as well.

No tip. Wouldn't call corporate though. I just wouldn't return to the restaurant. I would, however - Tweet, Blog and Facebook it.

My fiance thinks it is awful that I left no tip. He wanted to leave 10% ( we normally tip at least 20% usually a little more) because the food was good. My fiance was embarrased that I left no tip. But I think the server was so bad, he earned his zero tip. I was pretty angry.

The server didn't make the food, the kitchen did. And kitchens aren't part of tip pools, they make an hourly rate (and if they're any good, they're generally paid fairly well). So don't tip based on the food. You tip for service.

For instance...if your steak was overcooked, would you blame the server? No...you hold your server accountable for how the situation is handled once the kitchen's error is discovered.
