Solo Traveller Question

Hi, my sister arrived at WDW yesterday, September 19th. She was supposed to be going with her BF (trip booked in May, using Aeroplan points so non-refund...) but they broke up 2 weeks ago and of course he refused to go. Here is my question...how safe is it for a solo female traveller? She's staying onsite and is very travel savvy but I guess I just need to know... Also, are there any places that she could go in the evenings that wouldn't be a "pick-up" place so she could have a drink or two without feeling unconfortable. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated!!
Thanks!

It's probably one of the safest places possible for a solo woman. The Adventurer's Club at PI is fun (altho it's more fun if you're with someone). I wouldn't worry about going to any of the resort bars, or those in Epcot, etc. alone. She might want to avoid Mannequin's at PI, but everywhere else should be fine.
I've traveled lots of places alone (incl WDW) over the years -- just be confident and have your own type of fun. I'm sure she'll be a little gloomy coming off a relationship, but hopefully she'll be distracted by the magic and enjoy it.
About the only odd thing I came across at WDW was eating at the Crystal Palace Pooh breakfast -- the hostess seemed startled by my being there alone.

Any of the WDW resort lounges are lovely and she'll not feel out of place. Mizner's in the GF is particularly nice. Remember, you can visit any resort you please and having a drink in any given lounge is what they are hoping you'll do.

PI is a little hectic usually, but given the construction mess, not too chaotic with people right now.

Raglan Road is a nice place to have a drink. She can listen to the music and if she times it right, can see the Irish Dancer.

She'll be very safe, particularly if she stays on WDW property, although off property isn't bad (for the most part).

Thank-you for your responses! I've left a message for her in her room so hopefully I can pass on some of this great info. :sunny:

You didn't say where she was staying, but I've been to Jellyrolls a few times solo and have always felt safe. The piano players are great and I usually grab a seat near the bar (counter-style seating), have a few drinks and enjoy the show. If there are any "uncomfortable" situations, there are plenty of bouncers that are throughout the bar. This was the first bar (aside from my town bars) that I immediately felt at ease in when traveling solo.

Hope she enjoys her trip!!! :teeth:

I've been 4 times solo, with a 5th trip coming up soon. I never leave the Disney property and am not really a big Pleasure Island person. Have always felt safe in the parks and at the resorts (one stay @ CBR I was a little nervous having to walk across a dimly lit parking lot to get from the bus stop to my room). I always take the same precautions at WDW as I do anywhere else. I always double lock my room door, even if I'm only grabbing something quick. I never take alot of cash, credit cards, jewelry, etc. Only take what I absolutely need. 1 credit card, 1 ATM card, no jewerly (except the necklace I never take off anyway), my cell phone, & my digital camera. Less taken, less worry about losing it. I always make sure I am comfortable and aware of my settings in the parks, waiting for the bus or at the resort. Don't take anything valuable to the pool if you are going solo. Too risky to have it walk away when you are not looking. I love to read, so I always have a book with me. I find this helps get rid of any awkwardness of dining alone or while waiting for a parade or show to start.

She'll be very safe. I just returned from a solo trip, and I'm not very confident in crowds usually, so I was really a little uneasy on my first solo trip to WDW. Yet last week (my 7th or 8th solo trip), I noticed that no one thinks you're alone! CMs thought I was part of a group either in front of me or behind me in line for rides. The funniest one was on a tour where there was a man who came solo, his wife was back in the room. The CMs constantly mistook us for a married couple, even though we barely spoke to each other (maybe that's why!). We just laughed and said "Well, we're married-just not to each other." At sit-down resturants (if she's going to do sit downs), tell them when you check in that you're solo and would like a table with a view to occupy your time during dinner. I always got a nice table that way, which I really appreciated.

I can only echo what others have said. I've done full solo trips and partial solo trips (family and friends meeting up with me later) and I've never felt unsafe at WDW. My last solo trip was in February and I stayed at the BWV. Rented a convertable for myself and had a blast! I hope she has great time there :)

How old is she? Where is she staying? What does she look like? I will try to find her and see if I can pick her up.

I, too, have gone to disney several times alone. I enjoy going to the lounge at Port Orleans Riverside, Wednesday-Saturday. The piano player there, Bob Jackson, is very entertaining. It is a very family oriented show, so I always feel safe alone. He plays from 8:30-midnight. (Can you tell I'm a member of his fan club. :thumbsup2 )
