Solo TR – You’re staying where? First Solo Trip to the World.

Really like the look of POR! When are they starting the refurb?? Thought about trying this resort in February while at the Princess Half, but if it's under construction we might want to stay clear.

Well the projected start date now is May, so I'm not sure how far along they'll be by February. They are starting the Mansions section first, and they are going building to building. The AB section should be under way by February, I would think.

Have you checked out the new threads about the newest Princess rooms going in the Mansions section? :goodvibes

Day 4 April 20th

Today was the day of my Premium seating at TL.

Got on the bus to go enjoy some watery fun, and discovered that TL was crazy crowded busy. The high that day was 91 degrees.

I would love to find out about a less crowded time to visit. Once again I looked for Cheshire Figment, but couldn’t find him. I did see one older fellow with the same name, but it wasn’t CF. :sad1: That makes five trips over three years that I've tried to find him, but can't. Jeez, I just want to thank the guy in person!

Anyhow, the back ground music at TL is Caribbean with some Beach Boys and some old Glen Miller music. I'm not sue why they have old Glen Milleer music in the Premium Seating section, but hey....

Premium seating is worth it when it's crowded, the umbrella was welcome. :) The chairs are old and cheap though. The chairs at the quiet pool at POR were better, and the chairs at the main pool at POR were those nice cloth like loungers. But you do get an umbrella, a table, two loungers and two kid chairs there. :)

Went on Mayday Falls after a half hour wait, and it's very mild. I didn't want to wait for any of the the other rides, their waits were over 45 minutes. But I was in the lazy river a lot. :goodvibes

P1040263.JPG

I wasn’t overly impressed with TL. It was way overcrowded, noisy, and so jam packed with people that you couldn’t really do much of anything. :headache:

I'd seriously consider packing a picnic instead of getting food from TL too, since the waits were very long.

The waits for food were long too, and so were the lines to get refills on the drinks, and there were lines for the bathrooms. There were only three stalls int he one nearest me.

I do like the scenery though, and would consider going to check out Blizzard Beach if they had a half off price on admission. ;)

Like an idiot I went into the wave pool because I honestly thought the little waves were the “wave” part. :cool1:

I wondered why everyone was staring at the back wall, and why they kept cheering, so I went in closer to look.

And then I moved up a little closer.

And then moved in still closer until I was treading water.

And that’s when the HUGE wall of water came towards me. :scared1:

I knew there was no way I could out swim that thing, but I still tried. Well I got slammed into a group of people and then slammed into the bottom of the pool. I came up coughing and sputtering. And didn’t go near the pool again. :headache:

Once I’d had enough “fun” I went to the bus stop to go back to POR. I ended up waiting for 45 minutes to go back. There was a huge line for the bus by the time it finally came. :headache:

My take on TL? I wouldn’t spend the money. $50.00 is way too much money for what you get IMO. Especially since we have a local water park that cost $26.00 a day and is a lot more fun. Next time I do CL at GF or at Poly I will definitely get a cabana there. :thumbsup2

I hosed off at the room at POR and got ready for EMH at DHS and dinner at Sci FI. Had another brownie for a snack too. :)

:scared1:I'm not much of a swimmer, when we did TL I played in the sand with my DD who was a baby at the time. And we floated for an hour in the lazy river while she napped. Haven't been back. Sorry the wave pool attacked you:headache:

Just curious...what is the cost of the premium section? It looks much better than the masses of people in the picture!!!:scared1: Not sure I would want to wait 45 minutes for a ride, either.

 Thank you - it did attack me! That was unpleasant, to say the least. :lmao:

That's why I was wondering if there's a better time of the year to go. It was way too crowded for me. :headache:

The Premium seating costs 51.00 and includes two lounge chairs, two kids chairs, four towels (that you have to rent if you don't bring any) an umbrella, and a small table. It's in a separate sandy area not far from one of the food and beverage areas.

The cabanas cost 250.00 and include nicer chairs, beverages, and someone to take your order for lunch. :goodvibes

Once at DHS, way early – I went to see the Muppets. I love the Muppets, but again, it’s more fun with John.

I also went shopping and found a great Jack Skellington shirt at the Villains store that I loved, but they didn’t have any in my size. :sad2: So I took a picture of it and a picture of the bar code in case I had to try to order it when I got home.

IMG_20110420_190834.jpg

I gave up wandering around and was starving so I went to Sci Fi early. The chocolate covered brownie I’d had for lunch just wasn’t cutting it in the food department :rotfl:

I broke down and had the milkshake just for KOOK, I also had the spinach and cheese dip, and the Ruben sandwich. The food isn't very good there... If I wasn’t starving, I wouldn’t have eaten it. But I was, and I did. :teeth:

I had a full belly and really enjoyed watching the movie previews on the screen, and loved the theming of the place. The waitress I had was nice, and she brought me my “speeding ticket” at the end of the meal. Nice touch! I’m going to bring the boys there just for the experience. :goodvibes

Then I decided to get in line for Fantasmic at nine thirty. I met a nice mom and her five year old son Anthony, and we talked and hung out in line until we got in the theater. Just before we got in, of course Anthony had to “go” so I told her I’d save them seats while she took him to the bathroom.

My buddy Anthony

It was nice watching the show with them. Afterward I told her if she hurried maybe we could be in line for TSM too. She probably made it before I did, since I got lost trying to find it. Who knew there was a whole Pixar section back there? ;)

Well the TSM wait was an hour and a half according to the CM and 74 minutes according to Lines. But I really only waited about 45 minutes. The ride was OK, and I scored pretty high, but I still like Buzz better. :goodvibes

I listened to Mulch Sweat and Shears for a while - they're a pretty good band, and then headed back to POR. All in all, a good night at DHS. :thumbsup2

Yeah for the milkshake! I feel honored to have been the impetus for such a momentous occasion.

It seems you didn't find my expensive Bollé sunglass in the wave pool:3dglasses. Are you sure when you were sucked under you didn't see them?

The only way I was willing to do TL with DD last August was to go for morning EMH and stay only until around 12. It's a lot of work hauling those inner tubes and rafts up those stairs for hours and I am not a patient line waiter. We were able to walk-on everything for about the first hour or two and then it became a waiting game. The wave pool is great when it starts to get crowded (we got waaaay up front which is probably why my sunglasses didn't make the trip home:rolleyes1).

Nope - no sunglasses. But then again I was too busy trying not to drown or to crash into any more people to really look for them... :teeth:

Besides, I'm not sure if I'd know what "Bolle sunglasses" were supposed to look like anyway. If it isn't Crocs or Vera Bradley I'm clueless. :worship:

Does VB make a Croc yet? I know she makes cute flip flops and just about everything else:laughing:. A VB outlet opened near us in the summer and the weekend they opened the line to just get in was out the door and it was NUTZ in there. But, everything was 40% off AND I had a coupon so DD and I endured the crowds:crowded:. They should have given out fastpasses.

Do you feel like your trip went by fast? I can't believe you're ready for Day Five...

Day 5 – April 21st

So this was my V&A day, and once again I opted for lounging by the pool and waiting until dinner time. This time I decided to get some actual food before dinner so I wouldn’t starve. I got a kids mac n’ cheese with grapes and applesauce, and a piece of carrot cake (counts as a vegetable, right?) and another chocolate covered brownie.

At 10:30 am the food court at POR was jammed packed with people and was total chaos. I did know that the resort was full, but still. There were way too many people there. I would hate to see it early in the morning! Everyone I talked to said that the parks were super crowded, so I was glad that I had stuck with my evening EMH plans.

At any rate, I was at the main pool by 11:00, still nursing my sunburn. Somehow I had neglected to apply sunscreen the day before at TL, and now resembled a lobster. I decided not to wear red or pink for a few days… :lmao:

I found a good spot in the shade and read my book until someone said “Snake!” So I looked around and was surprised to find out that the snake – about 2 feet long – was slithering under my chair. It headed to the bushes and I decided at that point to leave. The pool was too cold anyway....

I ended up at the Gift shop for a while and learned that: To ship from POR leave your box open and have all of your receipts together. They will scan each item and close the boxes themselves. Good info to have in case I need to use it.

I also found a tote bag that I liked and needed like a hole in the head.

IMG_20110421_105100.jpg

Then in the room I did some measuring. The in-room safe is small, but large enough for an iPad. So was the safe at Sports.

Some observations:
There is a full length mirror on the bathroom door.

The lounge chairs at POR’s main pool are nice mesh ones. They beat the heck out of the cheap beat up chairs at the TL premium section.

Wildlife- several gray squirrels, an Armadillo, a large black snake at the main pool a large stork a large blue heron and a small alligator. The armadillo and the snake freaked me out. Do armadillos have poison barb tails? And are black snakes poisonous?

I took a short nap, then got ready for V&A’s.

Victoria and Albert’s

Now V&A’s was an experience. I called for a cab, and was dropped off in front of GF. I asked a CM in front how to get to V&A’s, and he took me right to the door. Impressive! :worship:

I was greeted by name, and shown to my table where I had a good view of the harpist. :lovestruc All of the seating is arraigned so that none of the diners are directly facing each other. :cloud9:

It’s very opulent in there. The wall paper is washed silk.

Then I was given my menu by Allen, who told me that Sharon and Frankie would also be my servers that evening.

I chose water to drink since I don’t drink alcohol, and I felt a soft drink would ruin the taste of the foods.

After going over the menu, I chose the Duck three ways, the Diver scallops, the Wild Buffalo, the Niman Ranch Lamb, the cheese selection, and the Kona Soufflé for dessert.

Of course the meal started with an Amuse-Bouche, which was a tribute to lobster including a poached lobster tail with Manchurian caviar on top, and lobster bisque. I don’t recall what the other two were. It was all delicious though.

IMG_20110421_173651.jpg

Then came the first bread course, and it was a simple baguette with salt free butter. Very plain.

Next was my Wild Buffalo dish. It’s usually served Waldorf style, but since I have a tree nut allergy, this was the nut free version of it. It was, of course, delicious.

IMG_20110421_175228.jpg

Next was my Diver Scallop course. Again, it was prepared perfectly, and was a very tasty treat.

IMG_20110421_180626.jpg

After that came the “star” bread of the evening IMO. It was a brioche, with black truffles, and black truffle butter.

Then came the Duck course. I had duck breast, duck sausage, and a rolled duck something or other :rotfl2: I’ll have to look up the exact description of this one. I don’t really remember, the evening was a bit of a blur at this point.

IMG_20110421_182902.jpg

I was smiling so broadly, and was so content that I must have looked like a lunatic. A happy lunatic, but a lunatic nonetheless. :woohoo:

Next came the last bread, multigrain bread, unsalted, with double salted butter. Very very good.

And then the entrée was presented. All this time I was served from the right, with the breads served from the left, which is proper. :cloud9: The main entree, the Lamb, was served from a covered dish. The flourish was perfect for this wonderful dish. I actually cried while eating it – it was that good. The potatoes were small Yukon Gold potatoes that had been steamed just right, then rolled in an equal mixture of salt and sugar. They alone were to die for. :worship:

[/img]http://photopost.wdwinfo.com/data/500/medium/IMG_20110421_184504.jpg[/img]

IMG_20110421_184508.jpg

The Lamb was rolled in a mixture of spices, including mint, and it was absolutely out of this world perfect. :cloud9: I ate this last course very slowly to make it last longer, and joked with my server about staying on and stealing every bit of lamb off of everyone’s plates. He told me that twice in the last year they had couples on two separate occasions who ordered every single item off of the menu and stayed through both seating’s. I can see why! I was tempted myself.

There were no salt or pepper shakers on the table, since they were not needed at all.

Oh well, all good things must come to an end, so I ordered coffee and had my Kona Soufflé dessert. I decided that next time I go; I’ll have the assorted sorbets instead. The Soufflé was too heavy after that meal.

IMG_20110421_192457.jpg

IMG_20110421_193138.jpg

I received my rose, left a hefty tip, munched on my finisher of jellied chili and a perfect chocolate covered caramel, and left for POR. I called a cab again to go back; I didn’t feel like bussing it in my finery.

The finisher that comes with the check.

IMG_20110421_194509.jpg

Since I was checking out the next morning I scoured the Lobby and the Store for a Princess to give my rose away to. princess: I finally found one, wearing a Princess hat in the store.

Well I asked her mother if she could have the rose, and the little Princess said “What Princess? Where’s the Princess at?” :rotfl: I had to explain that she was the Princess, since she was wearing the hat, and after some convincing she finally took the "Magical Princess rose" from me. Her mother was very pleased, and said it was a lovely thing to do. And I felt very happy for doing it. She was a lovely little Princess. :goodvibes

And then I toddled off to my room to get ready for check out day the next morning. :lovestruc

Well I felt like it went by fast until I had to sit down to write the TR! It seems so tedious when you have to write it all out. :rotfl:

If VB made a Croc I'd be in pig heaven. :cool1: I have more than 30 pairs of Crocs now. Some of them are replacements for when my favorite styles wear out and they quit making them. So some of them are just doubles.

This is my latest pair only in blue. Note the Hidden Mickeys?

11238_side_80W.jpg

But I do freely admit that my Crocs problem is dwarfed only by my resort switching problem. :rotfl2:

Just found your trip report and am having a good time reading it. I went on my first solo trip last Sept (we need a DHDH group) and had a great time. I'm planning my next trip. It seems as if all my pictures have DH's back in them--he was always rushing to the next thing and I had trouble getting pictures.

Can't wait to hear about V&A.

Great report! I thought the "unfortunate dress" was cute! You made me really wonder if I would enjoy this kind of experience by myself? I so love to travel with my husband, but if he wasn't around, would I like to travel with someone else, or myself? Uh, myself, I think. I really respect you and your power to enjoy being alone!
I'm curious...in hindsight, do you wish you had stayed at your first hotel? Or are you glad you switched?

:rotfl:I just bought a VB sling for summer. I love the dinner pictures, and you looked wonderful. That is SO sweet with the rose, I would've given you a HUGE hug if you did that for my DD. She'll remember that for a long time. When I was I think 6, I was at an amusement park with my mom, and someone gave me a stuffed Koala I STILL remember it. I was so happy:thumbsup2 Sounds like you tan as good as I do:lmao: Can't believe we are at the last night already....

I didn't have that problem last time I took DHDH. He stayed in the room while I went out and saw the Osborne lights and the NYE eve fireworks. That's actually what gave me the idea for the solo trip. Since I was having more fun without him....

We do need a DHDH support group. Maybe on the Community Board? :goodvibes

Thank you for the nice comments. :goodvibes I do enjoy traveling by myself. I did before I had kids, and never had a problem with it, and I really enjoyed my solo trip.

Honestly? In hindsight, (and actually the day I checked out), I did wish I'd stayed at AsSpo. I really liked it there, and kind of resented the money I spent on POR. It was nice to go back for a visit there though, but in the future I think I'll stick with the deluxe resorts or the values. Especially Sports. :)

I  VB bags. All of them. And the luggage too. :upsidedow I get a lot of mine on eBay on auction, so they don't cost me a lot. One set I had I sold back on an auction for more than I had paid for them in the first place. :cool1:

I remember nice things from when I was a kid too - that's why I try to do nice things for little kids now. :goodvibes I'm not sure if the little girl will remember the rose as much as the Mom will though - she was a very little Princess. princess:

And I'm one of those people that has to burn before I can tan. :upsidedow

Great updates, Karen. I'll try to remember all that I want to comment on.

I didn't realize that they were taking smoking areas away at the parks. However, I don't think whether they add them or take them away, that it will make a difference to those who will smoke where they want to anyway. I quit this past January 1, but I remember visiting the POFQ and there were people smoking outside the counter service place and it definitely wasn't a smoking place; heck, I found them smoking in the quiet pool at the CSR (and yes I did report them).

We love Muppets too! And Mark loved the reuben at Sci-Fi (I really loved the onion rings and the shake). We prefer Toy Story over Buzz, but both are great attractions.

You look lovely at your dinner at V&A. It is not some place that Mark and I would ever go go (Mark would call it "dainty, fancy food" and would prefer eating at a nice steakhouse), but I was glad to see pictures of the food as I've never seen them before.

Phew, just caught up - it looks like you've had an absolutely amazing time :goodvibes

I've got such happy family memories from POR/POFQ, that was our first ever onsite stay many years ago and we've returned numerous times - you've just given me the idea of going to DTD and taking the boat back down memory lane :cloud9:

V&A is one place I've never eaten, I think I might just have to consider that too lol

He's right - it is "dainty fancy food" :rotfl: But it's very tasty, and quite filling. I was very full by the time I had to leave. :goodvibes

Next time at SciFi I'm going to try to burger, and am having another shake. It was good. I'm just super picky about my Reubens - I like them with a lot of corned beef and sour sauerkraut. :)

Congrats on not smoking! :yay: That's a very big deal! :goodvibes

I would - it was very very good. :cloud9: My kids want to go to V&A too, but they have a ways to go before I would consider taking them there.

We try to go to POR every trip, my DS18 loves the kids turkey pinwheel sandwich there. :thumbsup2

Last Day – April 22nd

I was up very early, at 5:30. :faint: Had my Starbucks Via and a shower then called bell services for my stuff at 6:00 am. I had packed everything up the night before so I was ready for them.

I just missed the early MK bus because the Bellman didn’t come for my luggage until 6:40. :headache: Well, I got to MK by 7:11 am, missing rope drop. :sad1: I wanted to catch it once - but oh well, there's always next trip. :goodvibes

It was very quiet and empty this time of the day. By the time I left at 9:15 it was getting very crowded.

I had a lovely time that morning. :cloud9: I’ve decided that morning EMH hours are every bit as good as evening EMH hours.

I rode:
The horse trolley to the Castle
HM (I was only the second person that day on HM :yay:)
AMC
POTC
Had a Dole whip for breakfast.
TTC
And finally Buzz

IMG_20110422_071851.jpg

IMG_20110422_072136.jpg

Now remember that shirt I really wanted from DHS? Well wonder of wonders, they had the shirt in my size at the POTC gift shop. :dance3: So I was very very happy. :cloud9: Then to compound my joy that morning, they had a tote bag promo that I hadn’t seen anywhere else in the parks, and on top of that, was allowed to get my AP discount taken off of the total bill! I was having a very good morning. I was so happy I was skipping.

IMG_20110422_081709.jpg

The tote bag was $12.98 with a $25.00 purchase - how could I pass it up? :rolleyes1

When I went to get a smoke in, Aloha Isle was just opening up, and what’s better for breakfast than a Dole Whip Float with vanilla ice cream? I am beginning to consider dole whip floats with vanilla ice cream as a major food group. Good for dinner and breakfast. :)

So float in hand I made my way over to the TTC. It was closed during EMH my first night, and I didn’t want to leave without riding it. Then on a lark I decided to ride Buzz to see if I really did like it better than TSM. I do.

Well that morning I was still unsure about DME for my return trip. I never got a call or a letter as promised, and I had called several times before I left to make sure I was “in the system”. So I made my way back to POR early to get DME straightened out, check in for my flight, and recharge my dead phone. I did get a call the day before about DME for a Mrs Ryan, but that’s not me.

More pics in the next post.
