To all who come to this happy place… Welcome…

Cast – Me. On my first trip to Disney during my birthday.

Sleep was furtive last night, since I had a 7:30 flight out of Manchester, which meant getting up around 4 this morning. So it was one of those nights when you’re mind knows it needs to get up early and doesn’t want to let the body get to ever achieve full sleep, just in case… That being the case, I was up at 4AM before the alarm had a chance to go off. Tired, but up. With a quick shower, a load of the car and a quick stop at Dunkin’ Donuts for breakfast, I was on my way.

Still tired, but looking forward to getting to the airport so I can fly out… Now I’m bopping in my car, doing the arm circles while singing the “I’m going to Diiiiisney Wooorld… I’m going to Diiiiisney Woooorld”, c’mon, sing along, you all know it… After regaining control of my car, I arrived at the airport. Car stowed, luggage towed, shuttle rode, ready to goed. (Hey, it’s been a long day, what do you expect, Frost?)

Flight was a direct on Southwest, who are always fun and full of jokes that I can appreciate (which could explain using ‘goed’ as a rhyme…) In my seat, ready to nap through the flight, but wait… Who’s that? No, no, these seats aren’t taken. Oh, hello. Why yes this is an iPod. What do I do for work? Yes, that is my cell-phone. Yes, it is small, isn’t it. I’m reading “Sahara”. Oh, no, that’s fine, if you fall asleep on my shoulder I will just wake you up. Yes, I am of course talking about my travel mates, sisters “Thelma” and “Irene”. (The names have not been changed to protect buptkiss.) Happily, Irene did eventually fall asleep, and no, not on my shoulder, with Thelma caught up in a book, I did get to close my eyes for a while.

We landed 10 minutes late because of a strong head-wind, but I had managed to pack everything into a backpack and a carryon, so there was no waiting at baggage claims. I also was renting a car, so I can’t give any doom and gloom reports about Magical Express, I’m afraid. Though I saw a very happy looking woman with a Mickey hand waving for ME users (or she had some sort of digital medical condition.) Instead I was using E-Z Rent a Car again, though this time my experience was even better. I waited a mere (no, not Mear) 10 minutes for the shuttle before heading to an empty rental counter. My checkout person asked me to time him to see if he could beat his 3 minute record (no, he couldn’t, but it was close.) Documents signed, I got in my little red Ford Focus, (though there were no American Idols singing about it,) and headed out. Thanks to the quick rental experience, I pulled into Saratoga Springs at noon.

Check-in was fine, though the room was not ready yet. Which was okay, because I had planned, weather permitting, to go check out Typhoon Lagoon this afternoon. And though originally there were supposed to be thunderstorms this afternoon, the weather turned out sunny and 87 degrees. So I grabbed my trunks and changed at the SSR pool, (okay, in the bathroom, not AT the pool,) and drove over. After getting my bearings (I have not been here before, last year I went to Blizzard Beach for the first time,) I headed over to see the new draw, Crush N’ Gusher. Let me tell you, these don’t disappoint. They’re made up of three water tube slides that you ride an inflatable down, however, they are filled with dips, at the bottom of which is a just of water that then pushes you upwards. So this is really a water roller coaster filled with dips, rises, twists and turns. After experiencing all 3 off the slides I worked my way around the park, trying things as I went, trying not to blind anyone with my glimmeringly white body. After four hours I concluded I had basted enough and headed back to SSR. Oh, and someone asked me earlier if Crush N’ Gusher is family friendly, and it is, but there is a 48 inch height requirement.

By the way for those who are looking for a room report, here you go. No visible defects in the room, clean, everything made up, room 2101, right near the pool and has a view of Pleasure Island. 'Nuff said.

With an appetite worked up, I walked over to Downtown Disney to have some dinner. (I bought the DDE before this trip, so I want to see if I can actually make it worthwhile for a solo tripper.) Dinner was at Cap’n Jacks, at the bar, served by Stephen, a very nice bartender. It consisted of a Sam Adams, a cup of clam chowder, which was quite tasty, and an entrée of BBQ pork ribs, which were EXCELLENT. Cooked to perfection, the type you can eat with a knife and fork because the meat comes right off the bone. So dinner was $38, but with the DDE it came down to $30. Savings so far, $8.

Though dinner was excellent, it was huge, and I was uncomfortably full, so I wandered around for a while to let it digest, did some shopping and then hoofed back to the room to drop off my loot. (One of which was a reproduction of an old Disneyland Monorail board game, how neat!)

Now came the decision. Pleasure Island or Jellyrolls… Anyone who read my last trip report knows how much I enjoy the latter. BUT PI is right across the way there. Finally my body reminded me it had been up since 4AM without a great night’s sleep behind it, so I settled for PI. Half price with DDE. Total savings now at $18. Cha-ching!

Apparently a solo birthday trip is meant to prove that birthdays mean you really are getting OLD, because I lasted about an hour and a half, mostly in the Adventurer’s Club, which was very entertaining, but I finally had to head back. Which was okay, because I was just able to watch the fireworks from my veranda. Happy New Year! So I am exhausted, but looking forward to tomorrow, which will take us to the Animal Kingdom.

Oh, and also for anyone who read my last trip report, I won’t be sleeping with Kryssa on this trip. I will instead be sleeping with Stacey, who’s pretty cute too, and is growing on me, though I never thought I’d hear someone use the words “big daddy” to describe the “Wishes” fireworks. For those who didn’t read my last trip report, have fun figuring with that one. :) Goodnight all.

Day Two - Look! It's the Africa!

Once again, another very amusing and informative trip report! Looking forward to enjoying this trip as much as your last one.

Thanks! Off to the AK!

Thanks for your reports. As a fellow solo traveller, I'll be looking forward to hearing about your experience with DDE. I still haven't decided on whether to get it or not.

You go all the way to Florida and order clam chowder????? Don't you know that New England is the only place you should be eating that and preferably only at Kelly's???? But of course, I guess I shouldn't expect too much from a Pats fan. ;)

Thanks again for the reports - can't wait to read the next installment.

Sounds like you had a great first day, Craig!

I can't wait until you go to Jellyrolls. Do you still have my cell phone number? Want to call me when my beloved Scotty and Ray are singing so I can hear their voices? ;)

Looking forward to reading about day 2.

Karen
