What do you call it? I always say couch, but my grandpa always says davenport and my friend says sofa. :confused3

Couch.

I didn't even know what a davenport was until this thread.

Well, we have a couch and a love seat. I've heard of sofa but had no clue about davenport. Is this a fullsize piece of furniture like a couch?

I've always said couch, but my grandparents used to call them "divans."

I wasn't sure about davenport, but I googled it and a few images of couches came up, so I put it on here just in case. Maybe it's just my area. I live across the river from Davenport, IA.

Sofa and couch interchangeably.

I've heard davenport, but I consider it to be archaic.

Couch, but my grandma called it a Davenport too. She lived in Iowa btw.

Couch, definitely! I would feel silly calling DH a "davenport potato!"

We usually say "couch", but sometimes "sofa". I haven't heard "davenport" since I was a kid in Ohio (a million years ago!)

:rotfl: I always wondered if that had something to do with it, I live within an hour of Davenport! We call it a couch but it was just as common to hear it called a davenport (mostly my grandmother and her friends) while growing up.

We use sofa or couch. My Grandmother called them davenports or settees. (She was from the Chicago area)

I call it either a sofa or a couch, but I think I use the word sofa more often. When I was a kid (living across the river from BrerLizzie) we called it a davenport.

When I was really little, I called them "damports." lol! I now say couch or sofa.

I say "sofa" because I dislike the sound of the word "couch". :teeth: My grandparents also called the thing a davenport.

Never heard it called a davenport before in my LIFE. In my head, a couch has a loungey-type meaning to it. Like, a sofa is the one in your parlor where company sits. A couch is in the basement/TV room....

They are different pieces of furniture. In our house we have two couches and two davenports. The davenports are a style usually with prominent legs and aren't over stuffed. Our davenports are antiques (made in the 1940's in a "modern' style). Kind of like this:

ITA!

When I hear davenport, I think antiques myself.

Sofa or couch is what I use. Totally interchangably. I don't think I am used to hearing one more than the other as well.
