How do you order it in a restaurant?

"I'll have a Dr. Pepper coke?"

or

"I'll have a Sprite Coke?"

If you ask for that around here, they'll mix the two flavors together (after looking at you weird!)

I voted based on what I grew up with. In central Indiana it was pop. I even remember a store called the Pop Shoppe.

But here in MD, it's soda. I have to make myself think when I offer one to people, cause my first instinct is to say "Would anyone like a pop?"

Everybody here calls it pop but when I travel I say soda so I don't feel like a hick. If you do say pop they almost always ask where you're from and laugh!

Grew up calling it tonic, till I was in 8th grade and was visiting DC and I said I wanted a tonic. Guy looked at me like I had two heads....he said you want a WHAT???
So now I just say soda, but when I talk to my friends in the UK they think I am refering to like soda water....

For me when I was growing up it was pop, but then I started working near a large italian populated town and they called it soda. It stuck to me and now I can only call it soda.

And I'm a midwesterner and this happened in towns only 45 min apart.

Nope POP is the name when we go to Disney we cal our drinks by name so we will order Dr Pepper. I prefer the Pepsi made Dr Pepper to the Coke variety. In Canada Dr Pepper is only made by Pepsi. We had the POP SHOPPE here in London to they actually had the brewery for lack of a better term about 5 minutes from our house. You could go in and buy a case for about 2 dollars. It is now around 8-10 dollars a case for 24 cans here in London.

No we just ask for it by name. Here's a typical conversation you might have while visiting a friend's house:

Friend: hey, you want a Coke?

You: Sure! Bring me a Dr Pepper.

As far as using a name brand to label soft drinks, we have several name brands we use instead of the generic name. Some examples I hear: Vasoline, Kotex, Tampax, Kleenex, Koolade, Advil, Dixie cups, Saran Wrap, Xerox, AstroTurf, Baggies, Band-aids, Crockpot, Frisbee, Jello, Magic Markers and Sharpies, Ping Pong, Polaroid, Popsicle, Post-it note, Q-tips, Scotch tape, Tupperware, and Teflon.

All of these are name brands. If I ask for a Kleenex, don't feel you have to run out and buy the Kleenex brand of tissue for me. I just say that instead of tissue. I don't remember my mother ever using the words: sanitary pad. It was always Kotex. When we want a photcopy of something we say we want a Xerox copy. Same with soft drinks. They are all cokes to me. I hope this makes sense.

Another southerner here. Always called it Coke, Pepsi, Diet Coke, Mt Dew- whatever it actually was.

DH is an OH yank and he called it pop until he moved south- every once in a while he'll let it slip though.

How do you order it in a restaurant?

I usually ask for Coke and if they don't have Coke products, they will ask if Pepsi's o.k. and I say sure. Although w/ me, it is usually Mr. Pibb/Dr. Pepper.

Listen to me very carefully people! It is called COKE!

I use Coke as a generic term, but if there is a specific brand I want I will use it's name.

Down here in the great state of Alabama we call it Coke.
If you call it pop or soda, we just look at you funny.
