Sob Stories

Aliceacc, first of all you are an inspiration to me right now for just being here to write. My mom broke the news to me yesterday that she has breast cancer (early-stage 0 in the duct). Excellent prognosis, but terrifying all the same.

Second, I'm more of a lurker. I've been on DIS since 2006 over multiple trips, but I have only 59 posts. I love reading the trip reports and all of the great info here. I'm not a big player on the board, but if feels a bit like home.

My husband knows when I am stressed because I use DIS to escape stress. Disney is my happy place and DIS brings me as close to there as I can get between trips.

I'm guessing that a lot of people who post their sob stories do the same. They are here for a brief escape, looking for any port in the storm.

Prayers by definition are demands for attention from *whomever it may concern*.

I can't otherwise comment without breaking board rules, so I won't.

OMG I think this is one of or the most shocking and sad things I've ever seen posted on the DIS.

For those who say, "just don't open the thread", or, "you don't have to read those posts", they're missing the more SUBTLE trolls for cash.

The REALLY good ones won't start a "woe is me" thread. They'll post in a fairly innocuous, neutral thread, one about, oh, let's say, one asking for ideas for wrapping gifts. So, you're reading along, looking for some cool ideas, and then there's a very slightly pitiful post like: "oh, I can't afford wrapping paper, so we just use old newspapers".

Then you'll see that same poster post on other seemingly innocent threads. What movie are you watching tonight? "Our dvd player broke, we haven't been able to replace it."

A thread about ideas for Christmas dinner? "We're just having Hamburger Helper this year! We love it, so it's okay!"

And so on. Never asking for help or donations. Just oh so subtly getting across a message of bravely struggling, despite the obstacles.

I'm sure many people end up getting private messages of offers of help.

And now, I hope I haven't recreated actual posts here. There isn't a thread about ideas for wrapping gifts, is there?

I fully agree and these posters always, always have kids that are disabled or on the spectrum .:lmao:

Liandro,
I doubt most people are "making up" that they have children who are disabled or on the spectrum. That comment is totally inappropriate and ignorant.

what have I missed now ....... and have I mentioned my sick guppy? I just spent the entire Christmas fund getting the fungus out of those gills. Anybody have a website for making neato puppets out of old socks because unfortunately that might be our entire Christmas this year. Sad, my kids are such good kids too.

You know, there are some awefully sick people out there. I do believe you might be one of them. BTW you got the facts mixed up.

I just spent my Disney Cruise money last week to treat cancer in my golden retriever.

Oh, and my kids ARE good kids too and they ARE very disappointed to lose the vacation that we have been excited about for over a year.

Please do me a favor. THINK before you open your mouth or type. If you think you might come across as a jerk, go with that feeling and restrain yourself. It's called being sensitive. You should try it sometime.

Because they are always lying to get more people believe their sob story. They either invent children or invent not existing illnesses or disabilleties.

Remember the one that needed to know the Fantasmic hours from a CM before Disney announced them?
She had cancer was dying in a few months and needed to know them. When the lies finally bit her in the behind she just told us her "fiend" used the account to get this information.

The truth will always come out and it it just a well known fact that those that scam make up sob stories about disabled children.
They know how to menage feelings and just touch the buttons that will convince people to donate money.

I'm sorry but to much people have just tried to get advantage of those that have a weak heart. Just like the organizations that try to get your money by rubbing in "poor third world " children with honey around the mouth and eyes to attract flies.
There are more scammers out there than we could imagen.

Thank you for the laugh about menage-ing. That was a hysterical typo!
On another note, where did that "do not feed the trolls" emoticon go when you most need it?!

I don't want to be mean, but if I see one more post along the lines of "Our car just blew up/my mama's trailer is getting repossessed/my dog done died and the vet is threating to garnish my wages, and here we've got this whole unrefundable trip planed and I just don't know how we're going to manage, but we're just going to bite our lips and forge ahead, despite the crushing financial burden, because it's all for the kids" - I swear, I'm going to scream.

These have started popping up on almost every board. Please, PLEASE don't tell me that any DIS'ers fall for these. Please.

:headache:

KCpirate:

Why not just stay away from the Budget boards? Come on over to the cruise boards. :sail: Those sob stories are few & far between.:flower3:

Absolutely Ignorant and Inappropriate .:sad1:

Mel

The truth is hard but most of the scammers use non existing disabilities or even not even existing children to get into the wallet of those dumb nitwits that will donate money.

You're right. If someone tries to get people to donate money, it does help their "cause" if they have children with disabilities. They DON'T have children with a disability? Well, just make one up. :thumbsup2

That doesn't mean that everyone who DOES have a child with a disability is trolling for "donations". Just that, if you're going to donate to a deserving family, why pick an anonymous family that may or may not even exist?

Just donate to a family you know and not to those that come to this boards asking for a specific AG doll and sell that same doll on Ebay a few days later.

Um, my original point has been rather lost in the rush to cast me as a soulless, sad troll .

To clarify, I think all those lovely things (prayer, sympathy, empathy, sharing, venting, etc) are great. Just fabulous. When dealing with real live human folks. Reach out, lend a hand, it's all good. But when I see post after post popping up with sob stories about how 'tragedy has struck, but even though we just can't afford it, we can't disappoint the kids', and I know (because I've been on these boards for a good long time) that many of these posts ARE fishing expeditions and that DIS'ers have come back and reported on the boards that they were SCAMMED by these stories - well, I don't think my skepticisim and words of caution mean that I'm a pagan Grinch.

Cause I'm not. Although, dear reader, you have no way of knowing that, because I'm posting on an anonymous chat board (but my DD is REALLY a maid at the Haunted Mansion :flower3:).

KC:santa:

I agree...I am full of sympathy for those who face troubles even when in many instances their own actions have caused the troubles. BUT..the world is full of those who expect other people to take care of them and if you think some who post on message boards are NOT fishing for cash or products then you are being naive. Yes..I believe most of the stories and I sincerely feel for these folks and will give support or advice. BUT...I knew a gal at one time who played men on the internet and they were sending her money and she was very gleeful about her little game. I work at a church and I would say at least 70% of the calls (this time of the year more like 90%) are people either asking for or demanding help. As it should be, most buying gifts for kids things are screened by agencies and our people go above and beyond helping, our congregation also goes the second mile with helping funds and I'm glad to help the truly needy but the scammers out there are amazing, and unless you have been in the middle of it you really can't expect to understand. We also, as a congregation, are very aware of those around us who struggle quietly, not asking for help, and those are the truly needy. So look around you at your friends and kids friend's families, and others in your area and pick up on things that could be happening to help them anonymously. I recently just paid $100 on a vet bill for a elderly woman who was sad enough at losing her dear dog without the burden of more bills, and I also have my Salvation Army tag for a kid stuck to a bag of presents ready to go. There is plenty of true need close by and those who have their hands out to grab are the ones I think twice about helping.

The truth according to who?

What I find so interesting that supposedly the dis has over 300,000 members yet you seem to know the truth is most of these sob stories are actually liars and scammers.

uhmmm interesting. Have you shared this knoweldge with Pete?

Very typical of all these people who supposedly know some one on welfare who is living in a mansion, going to wdw 2X a year etc, etc yet when you give them the opportunity to report the illegal activity, they all of a sudden "can't" prove it but they know it happens.

So if you know all these posters are soliciting money from us dumb dissers, please prove it and contact the webmasters and the moderators because that is illegal.

From the FAQ's

From time to time our members ask to post information about a fund raiser or other support event for charity. If you are participating in or wish to promote a charitable event, please email the webmaster at corey@wdwinfo.com for permission first. We only allow posts that are in support of registered non-profit organizations and donations must be made directly to the organization in question via the internet. No requests for cash, money orders, checks or items to an individual, or personal address will be permitted. All such requests must be approved by the webmaster PRIOR to being posted. We're sorry, but requests for school/sports fund raisers are not permitted.

Please just give you're money to those you think that "need or deserve it".:lmao:
The naivety here almost is so sad. The liar about cancer was a perfect example for that.
Besides those scammers are not the most smartest lights in the universe. They use the same name on every board.
So this board just discovered a liar that was asking for money because she needed money to go to Disney whit her disabled kids and on the spectrum. She posted fake photo's and lies.
O and the same person was proud and telling us, the working class, she was scamming the system.
So 99% of those that ask for help are just fakers.
