I have some ?'s about SOARIN!

I was wondering how many smells there are during the ride, I hear different reports, Orange,Pine! some say there is also SEA,and Desert smells also! is this true?

The next ? I was wondering if the roof of the ride vehicle lowers when the ride begins, it looks like it might! Is it higher when loading and lower during the ride?

What merchandise do the sell at calf. Soarin?

THANKS!!

The last time I rode soarin' was in 2001, so my memory may be faulty. I don't remember a "desert" smell and I don't think the roof of the theater seats car moved in any way, but the entire theater move forward and up, row by row, front row being the highest.

Disney changes merchandise so often, it would be hard to judge what may be at WDW when the attraction opens.

I rode Soarin' at California Adventure back in April of 2004 and I remember only the smell of oranges while flying over orange groves. I don't remember pine or desert smells.

The way the ride system works is that as you walk into the "theater" there will be several ride vehicles on each side of you, one behind the other. You take a seat and fasten your seat belt. Above you will be a small "wing" as if you were in a hang glider. As the attraction begins, the ride vehicle will be raised and your feet will dangle and the vehicle will also pitch to the left and the right giving you the sensation of flight.

I can't wait to see what they do to the film as it is very geared towards Disneyland and California. Be interested to see if they add any Florida material.

Regarding what merchandise will be available, you can count on it being something like the exit of Test Track (I think) and they will have all kinds of stuff to help separate you from your money. :earboy2:

Hopefully, we will get a chance to see this during a "soft opening" during our trip in April.

Hope I answered some of your questions.

Have fun,
Sunking

They are doing absolutely nothing to change the film from its California version. There are rumors it will be modified in the future to include scenery from all over the country, but I wouldn't hold my breath! Mickey's Birthdayland was supposed to be a temporary 'land' over 15 years ago, but it's still at the MK, albeit under a different name.

They are changing the theming of the attraction at WDW from DL. It will be like you are going to an airport to visit the cities you see in Soarin instead of air history at DL.

As a DL AP holder, I've ridden Soarin' many times. The smells they pipe in are Pine, Orange and Sea (although I've never been to an ocean beach that smells as clean and crisp as they fragrance they pipe in). I've also been on the ride and not smelled anything at all. It just depends on whether or not the fragrance disc has any fragrance left.

Yes, the roof of the ride vehicle does lower slightly. As a previous poster stated, you are in a hang glider type contraption. Once everyone is strapped in, the lights are lowered and the top of the vehicle lowers slightly also. Not so much that you feel confined, but enought to block your view. All the seats are then lifted up into a concave shaped movie screen, so the majority of your peripheral vision is filled with the screen.

In the Calif. attraction, you are not herded through a merchandise shop after the ride. You exit directly into the park. There is a small gift shop across from the ride that had aviator themed merchandise, leather bomber jackets, old fashioned pilot hats (like the one Snoopy wears in Red Baron, sorry can't think of a better description), model airplanes, t-shirts with airplane type logos. But not very much specific to the ride.

I can't wait to see the differences they implement for Florida.

I think the only ride specific merch for Soarin' at DCA are pins--either with Disney characters (don't remember which ones right now) or some that look like wings you can get with names on them.

The canopy (that's what I call it) lowers down most if you're in row 1 (so you can't see the top of the screen (well, not too much anyway) and less so if you're in rows 2 or 3. Yep, Pine, orange and ocean scents. Sometimes the orange scent overwhelms the others, though. You usually smell pine twice and each of the others once. Not much to smell in the desert, so no desert smell, but depending on what you're flying over, the feel of the air blowing on you changes and the desert air has a dryer feel than, say, the ocean air.

While I've never heard it discussed here, one other "special effect" of Soarin that I've noticed is when you're soarin over Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Valley ski resort, you feel a rush of cold air. Likewise, when soarin over the coastline, you feel a cool (not cold) ocean breeze, mixed with the sent of the ocean.

Anybody else notice this?

I went in February 2004 and couldn't smell anything. It's an awesome ride, though.

I have to ask those of you who have been on Soarin... will it trigger my motion sickness? I can't do tea cups and spinny things but usually do ok on roller coasters.

:bitelip:

While it still is a pseudo-simulator ride, it has never affected me like Star Tours does. The ride "moves" in sync with the film, but it is a very smooth movement, not jarring at all and nothing like ST or BTTF at Universal Studios. People who are prone to motion sickness might feel just a little queezy, but should still find the ride enjoyable.

DCA's version has a 40 inch height requirement. I imagine Epcot's version will be the same.
