You can still rent - you'll just need to have the other member make the reservation for you instead of transferring points to you. If you are "supplementing" a reservation made with your own points, you can link the rented reservation to the one you made so that you do not have to change rooms. Granted, it's not as convenient as having complete control over the points, but as you say, the change is for the benefit of the whole.Cinderelli said:We rented out half of our of our 2005 and all of our 2006 points to cover part of the costs of the Disney Cruise. Having serious WDW withdrawl, we ended up borrowing from 2007 to cover our "before school starts trip" to SSR just last month. I now am looking to rent points to cover our Christmas/New Years trip in 2007/2008. I have been in this position before (always in borrow mode).
We have 160 annual points. We ended up renting some points from another member last summer, also. Some may say we need to just cough up the money and buy more points. However, with our children's school and academic/extra-curricular schedules, it gets harder and harder to plan way in advance (more than 5 mos), and to justifiy purchasing more points w/the additional maintenance fees (if we can't use the points).
Just having the option of renting points when you need them (maybe more than once in a use year) was really nice. We, for one, will definately miss it. I'm not saying I don't think it's justified to enforce the rule, just that we will miss taking the advantage of being able to do more than once in a use-year, if necessary.
I do feel like this benefit is abused. I just am bummed that those of us who use it once in a while to enhance the opportunities of our membership will perhaps endure some difficulties.
I do think we're in the minority, tho, and the change is for the benefit of the whole.

I think transfers would not be a problem if the MS computer system could properly track the home resort and use year of transferred points. IMHO, too many transferred points were "losing" their original home resort designation and use year. The increasing volume of the transfers (thanks to the internet, I'm sure) is forcing Disney to address that issue. If they ever "fix the system glitch", I think unlimited transfers will be allowed. (I suspect it's a rather expensive problem to fix. If members have to pay for the fix, I'd much rather have DVC strictly enforce the POS rules as that is undoubtedly less expensive).
I really don't think DVC cares if members rent their points to others as long as they don't have to get in the middle of any disputes and can hold the member responsible if there are any issues - which they can according to the papers we all signed. But DVC does have to care if the points system is getting way out of balance due to their negligence - i.e., not enforcing the POS rules and/or not properly tracking the points.
Best wishes -
