So WHEN is the best time to set my user year to?

I think that some of the seasoned DVCers are trying to tell you in the nicest way possible that you should S-L-O-W D-O-W-N ! :)
There is no reason to rush into it. DVC will always be ready to take your money, when you are good and ready :thumbsup2 . I think some of the DVC owners trying to help you can obviously see that you dont quite understand the ins and outs of DVC and fully dont understand it enough to rush into a purchase. Its better to learn as much as you can now, and fully understand how DVC works than to say "I wished I would have done this differently" after you make a rushed decision.
Again, the BEST money you can spend right now is to RENT some points from an owner and stay at VGF and AKL ........make it a split stay if you want ! Its still a disney vacation (very affordable if you rent points!) , but you will also be researching where you may want to buy. What happens if you HATE VGF ??? I know we always wanted to stay at GF, and when we finally did ..........well we didnt really like it as much as we though. Enough so, that we wouldnt even consider buying there.

I am buy NO means a seasoned DVCer, heck we dont even own yet. We have been thinking about it for years, but always found reasons NOT to buy ..........but for some reason, it makes emotional and financial sense to us to buy now. During the "years" thinking about it, we have stayed at almost every Deluxe WDW resort, and have toured/walked through every DVC resort (except SSR :lmao:). We have rented points and got the full DVC experience so to speak. At least we know what resorts we dont want to own at, and which ones we really like ..........and also which ones we would "settle" for because they are the best value. We have 3 "rented" DVC stays coming up , and thats when it finally hit us, that we should buy. We do like DVC, but it took us a little while to figure it out !:sad2:

Not saying you should think about it for years, like we did  , but perhaps take a bit more time to learn REALLY how it all works.

BTW, I appreciate your questions, it has helped up with some things we didnt really understand as well. Keep ASKING !!!

We are still torn on what use year would suit us best.

Listen to what everyone is telling you ..........these are the DVC experts. The salesperson from Disney just wants you to buy as fast as possible. Heck the salesperson from Disney probably knows less about DVC than most everybody helping with you with answers to your questions .........actual OWNERS !

OMG, that is the funniest thing I have ever read on the Dis :lmao::rotfl2::laughing: (sorry abarnes!) :)

Where is the tag fairy when you need her ! pixiedust:

Lol! I guess I am blinded by the pixie dust! Lol! Darn- it sure does take awhile for that stuff to wear off........I was in WDW over TG holiday but I DID just recently watch the DVC sales video where I had ANOTHER glimpse of that pixie dust! Dangerous stuff, lmao!!!

Ok - well I sure hope I haven't offended any of the seasoned DVC'ers on the board! i (we i should say - the husband and i) are trying to learn and read all before making a decision.

I certainly appreciate the advice and it is why I asked for input! Thanks all :)

I do realize this is a long term financial decision AND that means a contact with long term financial commitment -MF.

I do read the comments you all post and hubby and I have discussed these excellent points, which have she'd light for us on the entire DVC process.

Thanks for your time and insight to all sharing!
I'm sure no one is offended, we've all been there one way or another. I agree that you should slow down and spend a few MONTHS getting your mind around these issues. I still think a resale would be your first best step, better to make a smaller mistake than a larger one and as you noted, you don't plan to use at GF right now anyway. Am I recalling you're never stayed at the GF?

no one is offended. just worried that you might be getting carried away... :)

we just don't want you to spend a lot to buy in and then be disappointed. taking some more time to make sure you've got the details helps settle down some of the emotion and hopefully see some of the potential downsides (or at least limitations) of DVC ownership.
