So what's the story with the preacher's wife?

Wow, interesting and horribly sad story. I agree, I think people are speculating because it is just human nature to want to know why a seemingly 'normal' woman would kill her well respected husband...I mean, I almost want to believe there had to be a reason that makes at least some sense, like defending the kids.

No, it is never right to kill someone...but self defense or defending the children are much more understandable reasons than to be with a lover or gain money from an insurance policy.

I pray for the families involved, the parishoners and the community...how horrible.

I agree with every word of this statement!! I just want there to be a logical explanation for any woman to destroy her children's life like that. :sad2:

I just wanted to share this e-mail that I got from my friend Kelley today. When I posted on this thread earlier, I had no idea that the Winklers and I had any mutual friends even though I live in the town in which they attended college. Kelley attended Freed-Hardeman University at the same time the Winklers attended. Anyway, here is her message:

I know that you all have seen the news about Mary Winkler (wife in Selmer
who shot her minister husband). Matt and Mary areboth very good friends
of mine. We were all friends in college. Mary was my roommate for a
while. I am COMPLETELY in shock b/c of the events of the past few days.
Matt and Mary were both very good people with HUGE hearts!!! THey both
came from great families. I just can't imagine what has happened. I
still have to believe that "something" has lead Mary to this extreme
action. My point is: Please pray for these families!!! This is a
horrible story/situation for anyone to hear. It really hits close to home
for me. Please pray for both sides of the family!! Thank you!

Anyway, maybe this will give you a little more insight from a more personal perspective instead of just from the latest headlines.

May he RIP and rise in glory. May the Holy Ghost be with this family and the Church.

:(

Fascinated by this case, so I'm popping up the thread. I saw the mug shot of the woman and she looks absolutely haunted.

She really does look haunted. I can't imagine what went wrong...I realy feel for the kids. I can't imagine how you begin to deal with your mother killing your father.

The mug shot definitely provides a harder look from the smiling, cute woman in the family shots that were first printed when the story broke.

Now this pic looks like someone who could shoot her husband...

Thanks Stacy C for posting the email message from your friend. It's good to see a personal perspective about this family. In this case there may not be any more sinister reason than depression that caused her to do this. It's a very sad case. There is a lot of pressure on ministers wives. People expect a lot of them and hold them to very high standards. I'm so sad for this family ... and all involved.

Here is today's article that ran in this morning's The Jackson Sun . The Sun is published in Jackson, Tennessee which is about 25 minutes from Selmer....I'm right between Jackson and Selmer. This article will have a bit more of a local spin on things.

thanks for the link. It was interesting for me a Hoosier to find a local TN newpaper on line. It was a daunting task. Thanks to every one for sharing their information as well. Monday is almost here.

**Just a side note, my state isn't exlcuded from any wrong doing. A Franklin Indiana woman (I haven't read our paper yet) was planning on selling her kids to keep up her methadone (Vicodin) addiction.-The kids are staed to be 3yrs,2yrs., and 3mos! What is the deal with our society? :sad2:

While we're waiting to know more about what happened in this specific case :bored: , your post made me think of something. What you said about pressure on a "parsonage family" is so true [NOT saying this has anything to do with the Winklers cuz we don't know yet]. As a pastor -and being married to a pastor -I have some idea of how unrealistic some church members' expectations can be. Everything is cool now, but when DW was on family leave, staying home full time with our kids before they were school age, the church I served respected her little and demanded much from her. This was the main reason we left that place, even though it was a great and growing church. I cannot tell you how many nights DW would cry because of how difficult her life had become.

As understanding as I tried to be, it was alwasy like I was somehow part of the problem because she associated me with the church members. I wound up with chest pains and ulcers. Things are much better now; we co-pastor a church and are loving it.

One of the biggest favors a church member can do for her/his pastor is to stick up for the pastor's spouse and children (if any). Unless you are a part of a parsonage family you have no clue about the pressure that can build behind those doors.

How the heck would you expect her to look in her mug shot? I'm sure if you took a picture of me when I woke up in the morning or after a long hard day at work, I would probably look like someone who could shoot her husband. I'm not saying she's innocent or anything, just that I don't think the fact that she's not exactly looking like Mary Sunshine in that picture means anything at all.

I hope she doesn't claim insanity to get out of the charges.

Slain Preacher's Wife Apologizes, Friend Says
By WOODY BAIRD, AP

SELMER, Tenn. (March 26) - The preacher's wife charged with murdering her husband wanted his congregation to know "she was sorry for everything she has done," said a friend who visited her in jail Sunday.

Church member Pam Killingsworth visited Mary Winkler after church services Sunday and said the preacher's wife gave no indication why her husband of 10 years was shot.

"She just said she was sorry and for me to write a note to the church saying that she was sorry for everything she had done," said Killingsworth as she walked away from the jail in tears.

Winkler, 32, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband, Matthew Winkler, the preacher at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in this small town 80 miles east of Memphis.

Mary Winkler's initial court appearance is scheduled for Monday.

The congregation held its first Sunday services since the shooting death and were warned by elder Robert Shackelford not to speculate about why their popular, young minister was killed.

Friends have described the Winklers as a happy couple with no outward signs of *******, and authorities have refused to talk about a motive for the murder.

"Perhaps over time we will better understand why this has happened," Shackelford said at an adult Sunday school class. "Be very cautious about what you say or even what you think."

Mary Winkler was locked up at the McNairy County jail after being returned Saturday from the coast of Alabama, where she and her three young daughters were found by police following a multistate search.

Church members found 31-year-old Matthew Winkler dead in a bedroom of the couple's parsonage Wednesday night after his family missed a church service. Mary Winkler and the children were nowhere to be found.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has refused to discuss a motive, but said investigators did not believe it was because of infidelity. The agency refused comment on whether Winkler had been accused of domestic abuse. Court papers offered no hint on a motive.

After Mary Winkler's arrest, a Florida judge released her children - Breanna, 1; Mary Alice, 6; and Patricia, 8 - to the custody of their paternal grandparents in Henderson.

Neither the grandparents nor the Winkler children attend the church services Sunday. No relatives of Mary Winkler attended either.

Shackelford urged the congregation to pray for the children, their grandparents and Mary Winkler. "Mary is a member of this church family," he said, adding that forgiveness is a cornerstone of their faith.

"If we don't have forgiveness, then we don't have anything," Shackelford said.

Church elder Wilburn Ashe reminded members that only a few facts about the killing were known for sure - Matthew Winkler is dead, his wife is in jail, and their children are without their parents.

"Those children have got a good home that they're in, but it's not mama and daddy," Ashe said.

The church must hold together, he said, and not be torn by speculation and loose talk about the slaying.

"We've got to do two things," Ashe said. "We've got to remain close to God and we've got to remain close to one another."

Members put up a large bulletin board in a church hallway covered with snapshots of the Winkler family.

Photos showed the older Winkler children playing basketball, posing with kittens and rolling in the snow with their father. Matthew Winkler flashed a big smile in one photo taken at a church social while balancing plates of food in each hand.

Other snapshots showed Mary Winkler laughing and holding her youngest daughter up for the camera.

Mary and Matthew Winkler were married in 1996. They met at Freed-Hardeman University, a Church of Christ-affiliated school in Henderson where Matthew's father was an adjunct professor.

Matthew Winkler's funeral is scheduled for Tuesday in Selmer.

The news last night showed her attorney speaking. We were interested to see that it was Steve Farese. In this part of the country, if you're in really big trouble and can come up with a lot of money, you call the Farese law firm. Odds are that you'll get off. I know that he said they will be contesting the confession.

If I'm not mistaken, Steve (the family law firm is in our area) and his brother Tony are the ones who got the FedEx pilot off who was accused of murdering his wife and setting fire to her van, because he was having an affair with the nanny. He even had burns on his hands when he was picked up.

This will get even more interesting from here on out.

I can't really fault anyone for getting an atty with a good track record for keeping his clients out of jail.
