So...What will I like about Texas?

I have a question for those with asthma/allergy/sinus problems. I live in Southern California so I don't have any experience with humidity. Does the humidity worsen the condition? I am considering moving to Texas in the next few years. Thanks!!

I get ragweed bothering me, but the humidity doesn't make it any worse. I just get my allegra and nasal spray stuff from the doctor around october and I'm fine. My brother has bad allergies, but he won't go to the doctor or buy anything for it.

My parents live in the "wetlands" in the valleys of the Ouachita mountains in Oklahoma, and my dh's allergies are much worse there. It is VERY humid there. They get the same temps, but SO much more humid. It's even hard for me to breathe there in summer and I have only very mild allergies. Normally, he doesn't take anything here, but when in Oklahoma, he has to. My older son takes Claritin every Spring, doesn't need it summer, fall or winter. So, to me, coming from there, it's not nearly as humid here. Maybe it's even dryer elsewhere, I've only lived in Texas and Oklahoma..............................................

Purely based on my own experience as an asthma sufferer - no. I lived in Northern California for years plus also in Dallas and Houston. The only time I really have a problem is in really, really dry places like in Colorado.

I remember coming back from a trip to Denver one time and feeling like the air was so "soft" and comfortable in Houston compared to Denver. I actually had to come home early from Denver the dry air bothered me so much.

But I would guess that if you have a high allergic reaction to mold that you might have to adjust your medications.

I test positive for mold allergies and was quite worried about coming back to New Orleans in November. I've had no problems at all.

My in-laws live outside of Paris, (in the Northeast corner of the state), and I love visiting them there! The number one best thing about Texas for me is the Mexican food! I also love to shop for cowboy boots at any of the big stores, (like Cavender's Boot City). The people are very friendly, and you have everything you need available to you. I'm from Southern California originally, and I honestly don't know how anyone who doesn't already have a home can afford to buy one anymore! Good luck to you, whatever you decide!

Thanks Y'all!! The climate seems to be very similar to what we have here in Canyon Country-high 90's to 104 from May through October but you can where shorts and sandals on Dec. 25th sometimes. I grew up spending my summers up in the panhandle outside of Amarillo (Canyon) on my Great Aunt and Uncle's farm and my Other Great Uncle's Ranch near Sunray. I did this from the time I was a baby till I was about 13 years old. This was my Grandmothers family and she was born and raised in this part of Texas. She was very proud to be a Texan and my sister and I have always felt a kinship with this state. This is surely going to be a whole new adventure for DS and myself but it sure sounds like the folks there will be very welcoming.

I don't know anything about Texas as I have lived in So. Cal almost my whole life, but I do know you are going to meet many fabulous people since many of my wonderful friends have already moved to Texas...most to the Plano area. They all are very happy to be there.

It seems there is a sort of migration right now.

Well, until now, only Wheeler, TX was part of the vacation plans, but after that announcement, I might throw in a couple of days in Austin too!
I loved that city. I visited the Capitol (I have TWO Lone Stars from on top of the Capitol, one from July 17 and one from July 18 2002!!! Too bad I don't have the July 19, since it's my birthday, lol!). I also went to the Lindon (sp?) B. Johnson Library, I went for dinner to the Hula Hut (illegal drinking, woohoo!!!) etc etc etc It is so beautiful with the hills and the lakes, completely different from Wheeler (flat and dry) or DFW, ...



So, can I send you my preferences for men

That's interesting. I didn't develop the asthma until I had lived in Colorado for about a year. I moved back to California about 6 mos later. I still have it but not as bad.

Welcome to Texas! As someone who moved here from Missouri 1yr & 3 months ago, here is what I like.

1) Diversity... People from everywhere around the globe. Lots of CA & NY people flocking here.
2) Schools...standards are higher than Missouri. My kids are getting a better education.
3) Shopping and Restaurants. I have eaten Mexican food at least a few times a months and never in the same place just around where I live!
4) Weather...I love summer. Being from Missouri, I am no stranger to heat and humidity. Their "winter" is like "fall". Man that was great.
5) We are getting a pool...I will be able to swim most of the year in my own backyard.

As far as allergies go-mine got much better after moving here 4 years ago-could be my age could be the change in climate-still waiting for them to reappear. My dd started having allergy problems down here-I suspect mold. I'm allergic to mold too but haven't had a problem. I used to get sinus infections in the winter in Ohio but haven't had one since we've been here. Dh's asthma got much better after the move-I suspect that not having cold weather helped slightly with that, but also different allergens too. Oh and far as food let's add Whataburger!! I'm not a fan of fast food but they do have good burgers and fries.

I'm really looking forward to Chick-filet! Tried once while at WDW when we had a rental car and loved it. Oh! and my DS said Sonics is good too. Like we need more fast food to try!! We've been trying to lay off the stuff. We will miss Carls Jr and In N Out Burger.

Hey, Ive got another question. My DS and I are going to drive out instead of fly (would cost $1370.00 just for Air Fare) the 1st week of July to house hunt . I've already figured out what it will cost for gas and lodging for the 3 days travel each way (approx. $800.00 max) and I won't need a rental car when we get there for the week so I save even more.
What I do need to know are some nice, moderate hotels in the plano area or within 10 minutes or so away but in good areas with food and such nearby. We are planning to be in town for 5 to 7 days before heading back to L.A.

Ah, Chick-fil-a, home of the chicken on a biscuit breakfast. So tasty...

Sonic is good too, yes, you will miss In N Out, but there IS a carls junior or two in the area, my bro took a friend of his to one a few weeks ago in south dallas. If you crave it, you have to drive to it

I'm not familar with the quality/pricing of hotels in Plano, but you'll probably find some nicer ones off of 75 around park blvd. There are plenty of places to eat off of 75 and around Park Blvd. I'm sure someone who knows Plano better than I will chime in.

Also ya gotta get'cher selfs gun(s). All Texans have at least 5 guns in their casa (that means house fer ya yankees!)

Actually it's wunner-ful here. I live in Lewisville which is spitten' distance from Plano. If you're looking for cheaper (but still nice) housing then stick with McKinney (you'll be closer to Stonebriar too!)

The only thing that sux is the unpredictable weather. Spring and Fall last all of about five days a piece. It's either too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry (we got a drought going on right now)

Still...I love it here!

Oh yeah...and the best BBQ in the world is at Angelo's in Foat Wuth. That's also a requirement for Texas entry.

Texas is great!!! The best Mexican food in the world is here in San Antonio.

Also the wide open space, sometimes the heat does get to you like people have said before but you do get use to it.

There is always something to do. You can also have a vacation somewhere here in Texas either the coast good beaches best is South Padre Island, great big cities Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, & Austin.

If you like football wait until the fall when high school football is going on. Us, Texans are crazy for the high school football (Friday Night Lights movie) that took place in Odessa up in North Texas.

Too many other things to list but I promise from someone who was not born here (military brat) I got here as fast as I could.

One thing I remember when we 1st moved here when I was 12 was going to the mall on Christmas Eve in shorts & sandals temp was 92 degrees which was so different coming from Germany in the snow.

Whataburger-YUCK! Greasy burgers and wimpy fries! In-N-Out Burger has nothing to fear. You will miss that!

Taco Cabana-pretty plain but then we were spoiled by Taco Casa in ALABAMA! Yes, ALABAMA has better fast food Mexican then Texas. But for real Tex-Mex restauants Texas is wonderful!


Texas is a fun place to visit and live. I don't plan on staying here forever...its just not my thing. But it is an adventure!
