So, what is the point of an electrical outlet in a pantry, 5' off the floor?

I realize anything can be plugged in, but do you know if there is a specific reason why a plug would be in a small walk in pantry, about 5' from the floor? My wife seems to think it is there for charging electric brooms... Maybe, but I would think more people would do that in a laundry room or a garage - away from food. But I could totally be wrong.

Is there actually a reason for it?

I say it's for a zombie apocalypse in case you have to hole up in your pantry. You can plug in the microwave and you won't starve!

My first thought was a tv for the kitchen that is kept out of view. If you leave the pantry door open, can the person in the kitchen view a wall mounted tv? Then shut the door when you want it out of sight?

My MIL has an outlet in her kitchen wall like that. I asked her once what it was for, and she told me that when they bought the house (in the early 60s) it was for plugging in your electric wall clock.

Of course she doesn't have anything plugged in there now, because when is the last time you saw a plug in wall clock?

We had one of these in our old house, over the kitchen sink. I did hang a clock there, but it was battery powered.

BCB-my guess is that they had some appliance or something that needed charging so they put that in. Any chance you will see them or contact them in the future to ask because I really what to know now .

If it is inside the pantry where no one can see it, why wonder?

I personally think that is a good place to mount up a wall charger for something like a dust buster and/or a power tool battery pak; out of reach of little kids if you want it to be.

There's a restaurant here with a room that's two stories high, and there's one electrical outlet about halfway up the wall, so about 8 feet off the floor. I've always wondered what they plan to do with it.

How big is the pantry. If there's room for a small table or counter there, I'd use it for lighting, small appliances, maybe a wine cooler, etc.

I think it would be for a dustbuster or electric broom...that way the appliance is close to the kitchen where it would be used the most. We have a large walk-in pantry and we had the builder put an extra outlet in there for charging our camcorder. I wanted it to be out-of-sight yet in a place that was easy to access. works perfectly!

I agree... OK, I'm gonna go with dustbuster or such because, pantry is walk-in, but just barely, so no room for TVs, or microwaves, or tables.

Mostly I wondered because our electrical panel has just one open slot. and one of the used slots says "pantry" on it.... seems a shame to waste a slot to charge an electric broom, or similar.

Maybe a previous fmaily had it put there for a very specific use.

When my DBIL redid his kitchen, he put outlets above his cabinets, right up almost next to the ceiling. The reason being because he and DSisIL have Christmas village type thing that they put up there every year so they wanted to have outlets up there to plug it in. I could definitely see an owner a few years down the road scratching their head and thinking "What could they have possibly been plugging in up there??"
