So the Westboro baptist "church"

They visit us in Vermont fairly often. Their methods are quite appalling. Most recently they protested in front of a local high school because our state passed gay marriage. The students responded by creating a facebook page where people could donate one dollar to charity for every minute Westboro spent protesting.

i wonder how much that school raised...??

I also wondered too how much was raised and I think that was a great idea.

well we actually did not wind up attending today, we were volunteering at church most of the day yesterday and both of us are pretty badly sunburned. OUCH. lame excuse I know, but we have been praying for everyone there this morning.

I havent heard how it went yet but Im sure I will have news later.

are going to be picketing our church tomorrow. I figure we must be doing something right!
Must be. We had them (ahem) visit our church last March. We ended up with about 150 counter-protesters (for the 5 folks from Westboro). I love some of the counter-protest signs. The only non-religious-type one I can share was, "You're not in Kansas Anymore! Welcome to Massachusetts!" :rotfl:

I see they have a very busy schedule this am.....which church is yours?

There are all sorts in this world aren't there?

Dawn

Sooner or later they will picket someplace where the people don't give a rat's butt about legal consequences and they will get more than they bargained for. I can't say I'd feel bad for them.

We need to be careful that this does not become a discussion of either religion or politics - not only does it not end well, but it is against board rules... So be careful with what is posted :)

I don't think anyone here thinks that they are religious or political ideologues. Just NUT CASES looking to make money by provocation so they can sue.

They've been to our church before too. Our pastors knew in advance, and informed the congregation. They gave us guidelines on how to handle things...basically, do nothing. And that is what we did. Nothing.

I am appalled by these folks...I don't need to say any more than that!!

Wow, I had no idea they did all that sueing (sp)!! I just thought they did the protests.

DO NOT engage them in any way! The entire family (and the church is all one family) are lawyers and lawsuits are how they fund their protests! They sue people who shout profanity at them or get in their face or anything they construe as "threatening."

This is really what they want! Nothing would infuriate them more than to be ignored!

:thumbsup2 This sounds like a great way to handle the situation!!! :dance3:

I hadn't heard about these people until I saw this thread...I just Googled them to find out what they are all about...after reading about two paragraphs of their Wiki article I'm completely disgusted. Ugh. No way would I be able to pass by a group of them and NOT say something. :headache:

I can't imagine living all the time with so much hate for another human being. It must be a sad life to live...always thinking about hate.

It is more common than many people think. :rolleyes1

These people, ugh. Words can’t even describe. They picketed a church a few blocks away ( DH and I were married there) during the funeral for one of the NIU shooting victims in feb ’08 - just terrible. Good thing I had just had surgery a few days prior and was home bound. When they were here the city lined its snow plows, shovels up, on the street between the church and where they were standing so they were fully blocked from view. Those people need to get over themselves.

The WBC tried to picket a soldier's funeral here in NM a couple years back. But many Patriot Guard riders and off duty police officers lined up and patrolled the area around the funeral for at least two miles. The WBC ended up leaving after 20 minutes. They didn't get as close as they wanted to. The next day the mayor of Topeka called the mayor of the town of where the funeral was and apologized for what WBC had done and he said that the WBC is an embarassement to Topeka.

There are still people who have done touching tributes to the fallen such as a Lorraine Melgosa. Hopefully someday more people will know about Lorraine and commend her for what she has done.

My DH was a PGR state captain for almost three years and we're still active ride captains with the group and have been at the same funerals at WBC several times. They love attention and just want someone to sue.

BTW they chickened out coming to the area for Airman White's funeral.

A local radio station had played one of their "songs" about Lady GAGA and that was the first I had heard of them. I just went to their website and I am sick to my stomach reading a few items. They are a very very sick people. I feel bad for the families that have lost a loved one and have to deal with this. :sad2:

I was vaguely familiar with them, but I decided to google them for more info. I couldn't bring myself to click on their website, so I looked at their Wiki. I'm disgusted and nauseous reading about them. Freaks!
